Novak HV 4.5

Has anyone run the novak HV system in one of the new e-maxxs yet? Or even an old one? Are they good for just some bashing around or just not good at all?

Sorry if this topic has been covered.. I didn't feel like sifting through all the threads.

I am running the HV 6,5 system on my G-maxx and it suits me fine. Plenty of torque, and an ok top speed. I ahven´t had any problems at all with my system.

I have upgraded almost everything though, in order to make it as solid possible.

You can check it out here:

Bearing in mind the HvMaxx is about 3 or 4 years old, I think its safe to say people have used it in the old E-maxx  I use the original hv4400 motor with an upgraded sintered rotor in my Gmaxx too, and considering my truck weighs in at 13lbs, it does quite well if you gear down a touch over what Novak recommends. For the price though, there are much better options to go with- read around.

My HV-6.5 suits me just fine. Good BL power......plenty of torque/decent top speed. Runs great on 7-cell NimH packs. Simply & Reliable has been my experience. I've had it in stock 3906 chassis......MAD Torque!!! And now in a FLM X-chassis.

my bud is sending his 4.5 motor to novak. the rotor came apart inside (he could pull it out with endbell off)... funny enough he stuck it back in and it ran again lol.

It looks like they have updated the motors a bit since they first came out. I used to run on-road touring and used the GTB system and loved it. Hassle free from my experience on that end. So I'll probably just go with the HV system from Novak. I am not looking for top blistering speeds.. just some fun and enough torque when coming out of a corner to clear some triples or what not.

I'll probably be running some high end 4200 NiMH's and a few 3s20c Li-po's.

What is recommended on this system for some pretty good run times? Anyone have any suggestions? I am not looking for high top speeds.. but extended good run times.. but high top speed is also fun..

Thanks for all the replies

I understand the new model of emaxx it won't even line up. there's a thread on the forum here about it. because of the spur location the shaft is too short. The 5mm shaft upgrade I think is a good plan too

suicideneil 02.28.2008 05:26 PM

The maximum voltage for the Hvmaxx is 4s lipo, or 14cells. A good setup would be the gearing Novak recommends, but use the 5mm rotor upgrade with 5mm bore 32p pinions since you have to hang the pinion off the end of the rotor abit. I doubt you will be clearing too many triples though with it, its more of an upgrade to the stock titans- more torque and abit more speed, but not a huge amount really. More of a bashing setup for fun IMO...

If you don't want to do the 5mm upgrade and still use your regular 4.5 or 6.5 rotor just buy longer pinions. Just like the ones from RC4WD.com.

@bluonyx; Do these pinions work on the new 3905 emaxx with the allignment of the spur/pinion?

suicideneil 02.29.2008 11:41 AM

They should do- Im not certain as to there actual length, but they look about nearly twice as long. The problem is they only do 6-12tooth, then a 15tooth long pinion in 32p, which limits your options a little.

bluonyx 02.29.2008 12:53 PM

Yeah they work, the topic is somewhere on the Traxxas forums, but like suicidneil said they are only go up to 12T. I do believe some of the other rock crawling sites carry more tooth options.

I run a 4.5 in a G2R chassis. RTR it ways in at about 9.5lbs. If ur gonna run this motor find a better than stock slipper setup and order the 5mm rotor upgrade at the same time!!! After about a dozen runs in mine I snapped the shaft off. Other than that great power and speed, estimated speed to be slightly over 30 with conservative gearing and close to 12 minute bash times

RCShocker 03.02.2008 07:57 PM

I would surely hope that a HV 4.5 would do closer to 40mph

E-Revonut 03.02.2008 11:28 PM

It may be, but without a radar gun it's kinda hard to judge it. It's also kinda hard to judge how fast it's going when it's upside down everytime I pin the throttle from a stop! LOL When I get my 5mm shaft from novak I'm gonna try getting a radar run, once on 12 cells, and once on 14. To be honest I think my $30 6 cell packs from all-battery.com are faster than my $60+ 7 cell venoms. I know the cheaos have more punch off the line.

suicideneil 03.03.2008 08:28 PM

I know someone gps'ed their emaxx with hv4.5 at 43mph, so it will do good speeds in a failry light truck. Its when you gear it too tall or have a heavier truck the issues start I believe.
