Another Brushless Revo Project
I got the 2.5 rolling chassis today along with some RPM upgrades....RCMonster motor clamp 3.3 trans case.....rear break kit...tekno brushless conversion.....mamba bec
Still waiting on; feigao 7xl and a 9xl Novac ESC fan True RC 4s 8000mah lipo Forward Only Kit Tekno Wing Mount http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...o004Medium.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...o003Medium.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...o002Medium.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...o001Medium.jpg |

hi
i am looking forward to this one. i like the look of the white rpm parts a lot! ..... at least as long as they look new..... bye rhylsadar |

I did that on my 3.3 and die'd all the arms....bumpers....wing...and rims red. I will post a pic later. Im not sure the white would look good for too long. |
hi
yes you're right. in the long run those white parts may get ugly....however that happens with other colors as well at least to some extent. red is cool also. red/black is nice for a car. bye rhylsadar |
I did a little more work tonight. I tore down the roller chassis a little more to get it nice and clean. I got the feigao 7xl in the mail today so I decided to
do a little mock up with the motor and tekno conversion hardware. It was pretty easy and I can wait to finish and get this thing on the road. I just realized i ordered the wrong size heatsink and clamp from RCMonster......o well...I hope I can exchange it. The only issue is needing to dremel a flat spot on the on the motor shaft for the elektri-clutch adapter.......no problem there. So far so good.....just waiting on a few more parts and the lipo battery. Im going to use a hitec hs-645 high torque servo. Im most likely going to get it going before installing the center dif and forward only......just to see the difference. Also not sure what im going to do for gearing.....any suggestions? I do have a few questions. 1. The wires on the MM esc.....red...white...black. The wires on the 7xl Red...Green...Yellow. What goes to What?? 2. The Tekno instructions suggest installing the clutch shoe's in the leading position. Anyone have an issue with this? http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...o006Medium.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...o007Medium.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...o008Medium.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...o009Medium.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...o010Medium.jpg |
The colors on the motor wires don't matter just plug them in and see if it runs correctly and if not then unplug and switch two of the wires and it should work. This caused no harm when I did this to my MM setup so you should be fine.
Mine ended up being: MM->Feigao RED->YELLOW WHITE->GREEN BLACK->RED |
As others have said, wire order doesn't matter for sensorless motors. Switch any two wires to reverse direction. Sensor[i]less[\i] motors are different and NEED to be hooked up in the right order.
The clutch shoes in the leading position will grab harder and slip less once they engage. |
i realize that the the clutch will grab harder in the leading position but was not sure it would lead to problems...stress on gears...stuff like that. I have read that some don't use a clutch spring. I guess I will try different set ups and see what works for me.
|
Well, seeing as how the stock tranny has a slipper, that should help cushion the blow and protect the gears. Not using a clutch spring basically makes it so the clutch engages as soon as there is pretty much any motor turning.
|
Well.....i guess im gonna need to find a wheelie bar them lol
It looks like im going to need to extend the esc/motor wires to bring them together. What gauge wire should i use? |
Whatever gauge is one the ESC. IIRC, the MM uses 13GA wire. If you are extending them, use 12GA if you can, but I heard that Castle uses solder that is difficult to work with. Just make sure you don't heat things up so much that the traces start lifting and/or burning out components.

with my Revo I have done the FOC and the CD as you have but also it really helps to do the Mod that involves removing the 1st gear and locking in the 2nd gear (with as much instant torque you get with a BL motor 1st gear is unneeded), I have read that you should use 500k fluid in the CD ( it come with 100k) but I have yet to test this for myself and also I am a basher not a racer so it is to be seen if it matters. here is the link for the Mod http://rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7441 and I went with the 3rd option and using motor braking, I was thinking since I am not racing the braking won't be a major issue |
AZJC......I have looked at the "2nd gear only" mod. I think im gonna leave the trans stock at first...then do the FOC and center diff.....then maybe lock out first...then close gear ratio....
I will do one mod at a time and see how it effects the truck Im still not sure what clutch bell/slipper combo to go with. |
nice one!!! another revo nearlly done!!!
|
Isn't the a-arm going to hit the motor and wires? I mean the revo has long travel suspension.
|
It might do- best option is to rotate the motor so that the wires exit at the top, rather than the bottom. Still, if the motor sticks out too far towards the rear, the a-arms will hit it before the wires, but its only at the very top of the suspension travel (I have read), so it isnt too much of an issue.
|
Personally mount the esc over the rear shocks and ditch the mount - I wouldn't want the extra motor lead extension

Hey guys......thanks for checking out my pics.....another set of eyes is always a good thing. Im at work so I don't have the it in front of me right now but I dont think the motor will hit the arms but I will check...I know it looks close though.
I do agree about relocating the ECS to avoid extending the motor wires. I actually did that last night and im not crazy about the set up. Im gonna look at some of the other treads and try and find other ideas for mounting the esc closer to there rear. I did get everything working last night. I was not to crazy about the gear mesh however. Just from running it with the wheels off the ground...I could see the spur gear wearing down. I thought that maybe since it was a new spur it was just getting worn in. I took it outside and tried it out this morning before work and sure enough.......stripped the spur after about 30 feet. I still have alot of work to do to iron things out. So what are my options for a pinion set up if I dont use the elektri_clutch adapter/? |
As I see it, your ESC mounting options are:
- Over the shocks. Makes it hard to adjust them though. - Over the tranny. Makes it sit kinda high exposing it to potential damage from on-the-lid landings. - If you went with electrical brakes (need to lock the tranny in second), you'd have the area where the brake servo is. Gear mesh should not wear out that quick. Did you have it too tight? Using the paper trick to set the mesh works well. Pinion options are kinda limited since the motor shaft isn't long enough to reach the spur using regular pinions. The Tekno mount makes the motor sit kinda far back. You could find a way to lock the clutchbell to the flyweel (JB-Weld/screws?), or use Mike's two speed pinion adaptor and only use the first gear pinion position. |

Do you think the Long Shank Pinion from Mega Motor USA would line up? What pitch pinion would I need to go with Revo Spurs? |
Not sure about that. I would just get some measurements and see what works.
Revo spurs are Mod1 pitch... |

UPDATE........
so here is what i did this morning.... 1. Removed 2.5 trans.....installed 3.3 trans (had to use the dremel some) 2. Added center diff, FOC, rear break, close gear ratio 3. Moved ESC mount to rear shock tower 4. 15T clutch bell, Robinson 40T Spur 5. RC Monster Heatsink, clamp You guys ad asked if the rear arm would hit the motor and wires the way I had it installed. Well the wires were in fact hitting. I took your advise and mounted the motor with the wires on top. The motor will touch a-arms only if the suspension is fully compressed. Things I still have to do. 1. Install novak fan to esc. 2. Shorten the motor wires 3. Install tekno wing mount Not sure I will be able to put in on the road today due to the rain. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m.../e-revo011.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m.../e-revo010.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m.../e-revo009.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m.../e-revo008.jpg |
Well the rain finally stopped. (I installed the tekno wing while I was waiting)
I loaded up the batteries....12 cells 4300mah......and fires it up. Ran for about 10 minutes with no problems. Speed probably around high 20's low 30's. hits second gear a little late but i can adjust that. front wheels came up for a few feet if I gave it full throttle off the line. All and all im very pleased. I didnt check the temps while I was running but nothing was too hot to touch. I did check temps when I got inside......motor and esc were around 100 and the batteries were 150. Now I will play with gearing...maybe lock into second gear. I also have two 7 cell packs I may try but im not sure if 16.8v is too much. I cant wait for the 4s 8000 lipo to get here. Where should I wire the fan into? |
Normally the fan (for the esc) would be plugged into the Rx- yours is at opposite ends of the truck, so I would say maybe take a power-tap from the BEC, or the deans plug going to the battery pack (7.2-14.4v, depending on the fan voltage).
|
I was able to route the wiring for the fan to the receiver. No problem there. Its a 5-7.4v novak fan and I have the CC BEC set to 6v.
I got the 4s 8000mah lipo today from true rc. I cant wait to see that it can do tomorrow. Do you think the MM and 7xl can handle a 4s lipo? I have noticed that most are running 8xl's in there revo's or emaxx's. Whats the advantage of a 8xl over a 7xl? I have been looking for an feigao 8xl but cant find one anywhere. Im not looking to spend the money for a Neu but im looking for another motor. I noticed that the rc monster store has wanderer's on stock.......is the wanderer 8xl comparable to the fiegao?? |
I can say that a 7xl will work fine on 4s. Just gear for about 35mph and check temps. You can gear up as temps allow. With good batteries you can get 45mph out of a 7xl, but 40mph will yeild better temps. Most go to 8xl as they can gear up to make up for lost speed due to a slower turning motor. And motor temps are supposed to be better. I am not sure if it is worth the extra cost.
I have a few 7xl motors and they work fine on 4s, no reason for me to change! |
project complete.........well almost. I still have to put on all the rpm arms and carriers....but for the most part its done. I received my 4s 8000 true rc lipo yesterday and mounted it this morning. I spun the speed control around to better access the usb port.
I should have a video later to day. Also if anyone has any input on another motor I would appreciate it. I cant find a feigao 8xl anywhere. Im thinking of getting a Wanderer from the store here. Im looking more for acceleration more than top speed and looking to spend 100 or less. Any suggestions?? |
|
I actually thought that was DickyT's truck for a minute when I saw the battery, lol.
Turned out really well. |

I also did a few high speed runs but none on film. temps seemed to be fine. motor and esc around 100 batt around 120 |

AZJC sent me a link to another site that had them in stock also..... I have one on the way. :yipi: |
Just made another video.....wheelies and back flips mostly....will post it soon
Having a heat issue though. 4s 8000 lipo................................100-120 mamba max esc (w/fan)..............150-175 Feigao 7xl...................................200-225 im running a 40t spur and a 15t cb any suggestions on changing gearing?? Im hoping the 8xl will help with temps. |
