What to do for a savage motor mount?
So I just acquired a stock savage, non x model. What should I do for a motor mount? I can make one, from some thick al angle. Kershaw make a mount, but 35 bucks seems like a bit much.
I already have a savage xss with the flm tranny forward chassis. I would just use the stock one I just got as a basher. I have a spare 14xl, 9s worth of 2500 lipos, and a great planes 60hv esc. Going to keep the 2 speed and stock mech brakes. Mainly going to do this on the cheap, but I do not mind making a mount and battery trays. What do you guys think? |
I think you have too many cars seriously. I'd make it like the kershaw mount if you can. Why aren't you going to bash the FLM savage?

I like the way the flm motor mount works, not sure if I can fit something like that in between the tvps. I have to pull the motor and have a look. Does anyone else make a motor mount? |
Fastlane and kershaw are the only ones I know.
I've seen linc don't worry. http://us.movies1.yimg.com/movies.ya.../frank_oz7.jpg |
HAHA
How the hell did you get hold of my wedding pics? Damn that dress makes me look fat! I just ordered the kershaw mount, figured it would save me some time. I will still make my own battery holders, most likely a drop in from the top design so that the batts have some protection from side impacts. Now, all I have to do is strip the truck down, clean everything and fix whatever I find! |

You will definately have pics, and i am working on getting one of my employees to bring his camera in and vid me!

Started tearing it apart, cleaned most of it, and should have it all back together tomorrow. Nitro motor, tank and other related parts are on ebay!
So far it looks like a good deal. The front diff is fine, only had to buy a pair of driveshafts and a 47t plastic spur. It is missing a few screws, but everything else looks fine. I am thinking of upgrading to a double disk brake setup, is there a hpi kit, or do I have to buy the parts seperately? |

That's the dual disc setup. I like these a lot but I am grinding down the rotors fairly quickly. Stuff gets stuck between them and the FLM bash plate. |
Found this on tower:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXSGF1&P=7 Do I need a twin disk brake to slow this beast? I plan on using a 3050 mg futaba servo for brakes, so power will not be an issue. This will not be a super heavy truck, but will weigh more than a stock savage. |
I find that kit is the most reliable as far as braking performance.

I hate to mention it, but fine design makes a savage motor mount for both 540 type and Neu 1500 series motors.

There is a picture in this thread.

Thanks for the link, that looks interesting. I may see what I can mock up to see if the motor can be mounted lower in the chassis, maybe below the spur gear.
|
Picture Time!!!!
Here we go, what you have all been waiting for. Everything is as clean as I care to get it, all bearings cleaned and oiled, and a fresh spur gear. I also installed the double disk brake kit as the old disk looked very worn.
Looking at the nitro motor mount plate, it looks easy to make an electric motor mount. I will use some angle al, and use the slotted holes for the nitro motor to adjust the mesh. I have about 3/8" space between the motor and the tvp with my desired gearing, so I can gear up if needed. I will save the kershaw mount in case I do not like mine, but mine will be much lower cg. It must lower the motor about 1.5-2 inches over the kershaw mount. Wonder why no one else makes simple mounts like this? I am using the smallest spur, 47t, so maybe there would be issues with the 52t? Motor shown is a 14xl, so there is plenty of space length-wise. Battery trays are from FD, have had them for a while and they work in this application so I will use them. The spacers on the brake side are about twice as thick as I need, so I will cut them in half to bring the tray closer. I had to space that side to clear the tranny casing. I put the trays up from for weight distribution as the motor and esc will be in the back. Plus they cleared the brake linkage that way, and are up out of the way. I will make some lexan covers for the lipos so they cannot be punctured or damaged. Just need to wire it up and make the motor mount, this thing may run this weekend, or take 4 months to finish, who knows! http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF1999.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF2000.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF2001.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF2002.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF2003.jpg |
Forgot to add that i have settled on a battery for this project. I have 9 2500 18c cells, that will be made into 1 4s pack and 1 5s pack. I will most likely use a receiver pack, as I do not have a bec that can handle 9s input. I may hook up a bec to the balance tap of the 5s pack, but that may cause uneven discharge of the cells. I will cross that bridge later.
Since the motor will be mounted near the botton of the tvp, I will make an esc mount to place the esc above the motor, on the top of the tvps. The Great Planes esc is flat and has a heatsink, so I will put it with the heatsink facing up, in the airstream above the tranny. I will try it without a fan and see how it does. The esc and rec pack will go in the front servo tray, and I will most likely leave the lid off, as I do not have one. If the lhs has one I may buy it. I usually run on grass and the road, so stuff does not get that dirty. |
are you using a pinion or clutchbell on that beast. I am just picking up a savage and thinking conversion, but I'll probably order the flm setup from mike and rebuild this thing in the meantime

Motor mount finished!
Ok got some work done today. Made the motor mount, and it works great. With the 47t spur it will allow pinions from 10t to 20t. I currently have a 14t on is, and it is in the middle of the adjustment. Adjusting is done by the stock nitro motor slots, all I did was tap 4 m4 thread holes in the motor mount I made. The 14xl is fixed, so all movement is done with the 4 stock bolts. Works fine and keeps the motor low to the chassis. I have no idea why more people do not make mounts like this, it is really simple and offers enough gearing options.
I also made the correct length spacers for the left side battery tray. Just need to install a few parts and wire it up. Will try to finish tomorrow, but I may be buying a piece of land. http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF2004.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF2005.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF2006.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF2007.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF2008.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF2010.jpg |
Lookin' good, linc, but I have a question about the FD battery holders. What keeps the lipo from sliding rearward, because the holder is open at the rear.

Got it finished and went for a short run. well, by finished I mean mocked up enough to drive it and test my setup. Went out with a pair of 4s 3600 lipos in series, and the power was great. Had some weird handling issues, and the twin brake setup is not liking the stock tranny output hex, I need the longer ss one. Found that the handling was due to a shock not attached to a lower are, and one tire was coming off the bead on the inside of the rim. Otherwise everything went well.
The great planes esc has a soft start up, not really bad, and some trim adjustment got rid of that almost. Esc did not really get much more than warm, motor was warmer, but not hot, and the lipos did not change. Run lasted about 10mins and was not really heavy throttle. Tranny shifts a bit too soon, but I can change that. Very happy with this, and once I get the twin disk brake working right it should be fine. I will get some pics up tomorrow. Still need to make a final esc mount, and tidy up the wiring. Any ideas on a good, cheap bec that can handle 10s lipo? I would prefer that to the receiver pack... |
Didn't the brake kit come with the correct hex? Looks good Linc. The mount should do the trick as long as it doesn't allow too much flex. I assume the motor sits on the bottom plate so it should be plenty strong enough. I'm surprised there aren't more mounts like that mount too but mikes revo mount is fairly similar.

The motor does sit on the mount, and I plan to put a rcm heatsink on there too, so there should not be much flex. Maybe I should make some more, or get the local machinist to turn out a few. Mine is a bit rough for resale, but a nicely macined one would be good. For the best gearing options it has to be as thin as possible, to keep it close to the stock motor mount plate. |
That's strange cause I have bought 2 kits with the same part number as the tower one you posted and they should come with the hex. That's the challenge with the savage as it does need to be as thin as possible.
|
Strange, I just checked both pics and they do show the hex. I may have to look again on the bench, but I am sure that it was not in the bag. I will look tomorrow, and if not the lhs is open on tuesday. Monday's suck, so I may have to work on the truck later in the week. And I really need to clean my table up before another project, it is a mess!

Thanks, I'll be watching the thread. got my savage ss last night. next payday I am ordering the flm kit... should be able to order the monster max too to drop in... too many toys and too many lipos to buy is slowing production (just finished an 18B brushless buggy and working on a mlst)
|
Ok, made an esc mount, cleaned up the wiring, and took it for another test run. Plenty of power, and it will wheely all the way thru 2nd gear. The great planes esc is very controllable, and even starts up very well. If full throttle is pulled from a standstill the motor starts, slowly for a second and then full throttle. It does not do this when the truck is moving, throttle control is immediate when the truck is rolling. Motor got a bit hot for my tastes, but I do have a spare rcm heasink clamp, so I will give that a try. batteries and esc did not get much more than warm.
Sorry, no pics as the camera battery crapped out today, but I will try tomorrow. |
