Mamba Max Cooling Options?

Hello All just as a starting note, i Used the search bar before i posted:lol:

From what i have read there are a couple things you "should" do when running the Mamba max over 3s...

1. Disable Internal BEC (DUH)
2. Run a fan
3. Drill holes in the case
4. Sink it to a plate or hunk of aluminum to dissapate heat

I am planning to run 5s on my Mamba Max...Yes i know that it might not arm... But i have talked to a couple people who have run the same style MM on 5s.. but i just want a really effective cooling system. I already have a capacitor Rack with 8 330uF capacitors. I need help deciding what fan to use.

Are there any better alternatives to the Original mamba max Heatsink?

How should i sink the MM to its Aluminum mounting plate? its got a plastic case..

How should the fan be oriented in relation to the heatsink?

Would re-doing the thermal paste that connects the heatsink to the FET's help any?

I know this is kind of an extensive post but i would really apreciate any help:angel::whistle:

Look on ebay for heatsinks that are the same dimension as the Mamba Max heatsink. It might take some time but there are computer heatsinks that will fit.I found exactly what I needed for under 15.00 with a fan for my Quark 125b.I also have a MM that I run in my losi 8T also I cut vent holes in the body for additional air movement.

Alright but how do i know what would be better suited for the MM

rabosi 04.26.2008 09:31 AM

I use one of these http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...5&I=LXKKN1&P=K
but I only run 4s with a neu 1515 1y on a 3905 emaxx. After 30 mins of running esc about 100F at 75F ambient. No other mods to esc.

I say just run a fan, a cap board with the bec disabled and see how it runs. If your still having heat issues then look to last resorts.

You can also check what I did to MambaMax, click on links under my signature.

Personally, I am against drilling MambaMax enclosure, most important component is still covered by brains pcb, while dirt doesn't help.

Motor choice will also make a big difference too as far as heat goes.

3 steps to a good, cool running esc for use with up to 6s.

1: sell the MM, you will get between 90-100bucks, plus you can sell the ubec or rec pack for 10-20 bucks.

2: you now have between 100-120 bucks. Put that with the money you would spend modding the mm toward the MMM that Mike is selling for 145 plus shipping.

3: enjoy the fact you are using the correct piece of equipment for the job!

MMM????? No way! Go overboard like I did!!!!

This is a picture of the MM without heatshrink over it.
Heat sinks on both sides of the power board, pusher and puller fans. Never got anywhere near warm hahahaha

Seriously, sell the MM, get the MMM and be confident of a "no smoking" environment :)

P.S. This one is now w/o fans, caps turned up, and still no where near warm. I do have a second power board to put on it at some point, then I hope to go with a liquid cooling system for the MM and the motor. The buggy I run has little air flow through the body and the liquid cooling system will allow me to put the radiator where ever I need it to be...

That is some very nice modding DR.Know. Seems like it'd take alot of space though. But hey if it works then thats all that counts.

wow, lets see some more pics of that beast

I haven't seen MMM yet and size wise it is huge...

While MM has nice foot print and someone told me about MM-pro is coming out soon with switching BEC and native 5S support, I bet it would be back compatible software wise with regular MM... but maybe not

brushlessboy16 04.27.2008 12:54 PM

So the programming would allow it to run 5s safely? could i just get the software for my mm?

I think it was, but I read on here last night that the pre-order mike was doing is over. I am guessing he sold his alotment of mmm from the first run.

rcmonkey 04.27.2008 01:39 PM

Thats a pity, too bad I missed it:sleep:

brushlessboy16 04.27.2008 08:12 PM

same, how much are they running directly from Castle?

BrianG 04.27.2008 10:42 PM

On one of my MMs, I used two of these. You have to trim the corner of one of them to allow access to one of the ESC screws, but they fit well otherwise. The only thing you gain is a little more surface area and the fins are a bit taller. Haven't run it on a setup against a stock MM, so I can't say how much it helps. But the black looks cooler.

brushlessboy16 04.27.2008 11:14 PM

it does indeed..
