trans upgrade e maxx

Hi, Im new here found this site threw traxxas I have a t and a e maxx we just converted the e maxx to the HV MAXX brushless system. we upgraded all the drive axles and put the huge swamp kong tires on it, well needless to say my son got to play with it for about 2 min. when it ripped the diffs apart. the truck had so much tourghe when he floored the throttle the truck did a complete flip and landed back on its wheels lol. anayway I orderd the maximizer diff kits with robbinson gears to take the tourghe Ive been told the trans will hold the tourghe. can someone tell me if it will for sure if not what do i need? :D ( I know that the tires have alot to do with my problem but my son loves the tires. I have to make this work for him lol!!!!)

RC-Monster Mike 09.08.2005 05:29 PM

The tranny is pretty tough. At the most, you may need some steel idlers (http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...03idler&cat=40).

Glad you and your son are having fun!

booda 09.08.2005 06:46 PM

Thanks, Love this site if you guys dont mind I think I will hang around lol. My son was born paralized from the chest down we both love this hobby. Ill do what ever it takes to keep him competive in this sport lol. I need good hop up info and my local hobby store does alot, but there is still alot that is new to them. thanks, for your time and advice. Aaron

Papa 09.08.2005 06:51 PM

Ditto with the idler gears.

My son loves the RC's as well. He was born profoundly deaf. I know what you mean when you say, "whatever it takes.":)

RC-Monster Mike 09.08.2005 06:53 PM

Of course we don't mind you hanging around! Tough luck for your son, but at least his dad does what he can to make the best of the situation. I rather enjoy the hobby myself!

booda 09.08.2005 07:06 PM

Thanks guys.

mt_enthusiast 09.08.2005 09:03 PM

how well are the slipper and slipper pegs holding up? I had to run 12 pegs and little to no slip using the stock spur/slipper setup. I had no trouble with the stock idlers, but that was only one experience. As they say here though, upgrading the idlers would be wise. What brand CVDs did you upgrade the sliders to?

booda 09.08.2005 10:25 PM

Before i purchased the hv maxx i called novak, they recomended that i change the spur gear and slipper set up to the robinson racing slipper clutch kit (72 tooth double disc). i still had to run it a little tight, but i think thats becuase of the monster size tires we put on. After fine tuning the robinson clutch. my only problem was the stock diffs lol. I went with MIP CVDS center and axle kit.(a little more money but everyone around here says they are worth it). I still have a lot to learn about the R\C hobby, but Im hooked for good. Thanks,

P.S. They are out of the idlers but im on the e mail list when they get some in lol.

mt_enthusiast 09.09.2005 12:05 AM

have you reviewed Novak's gearing recommendations for the HV-Maxx? I know Novak changed them since the original product release.

Serum 09.09.2005 01:15 AM

Yeah, you can find the changes on the novak site. It's an adendum..

Papa 09.09.2005 06:47 AM

I would think that, RC - Monster Mike could hook you up with some UE steel idlers, as an option.

RC-Monster Mike 09.09.2005 07:53 AM

My idlers will be back in stock any day, actually. Probably before I could get the UE idlers.

booda 09.11.2005 04:41 PM

The only thing I could find @ novak was for the spur and pinion gears. I have changed that to what they recomended. Im just wondering since the hv maxx ripped both new diffs out, once I change them over to maximizers will it then start to tear up the trans. Ive been told the trans is pretty strong, but I think Ill still get the idler gears from mike just to be safe, exspecialy since we are running these huge swamp kong tires lol.

Dafni 09.11.2005 04:55 PM

Hey Booda, I just found this thread.

Just a thought: You may want to adapt the Novak gearing recommendations to your increased wheel size.
I don't know about your wheels, but if they are bigger, I would re-calculate the gearing. Let us know when you need any help.

About busting diffs or driveline components .... there's always something that "can" break. But the idlers are a good idea, for sure.

Sorry to hear about your sons' handicap. I wish you guys all the best, and good luck with the trucks.

booda 09.11.2005 05:14 PM

Thanks, Ill check on the gearing for the wheels and tires. I hope after the upgraded diffs and idler gears we can play. Have any of you ever delt with the ultrmaxx trans. kit? From what I can find out, it was a great upgrade for the e maxx but is no longer in production is this true?

P.S. Dafni, Thanks for the regear info. I may have to have your help on that calculation thing lol. maybe you can give me the formula to get the write gear ratio? oh and my son does not let his handi cap slow him down lol. He finds away to do anything he wants. trust me lol (he is my hero)

mt_enthusiast 09.11.2005 06:15 PM

Dan @ ultramaxxed has had a couple of sets made since some said they weren't going to be made any longer. I'd suggest you contact him about whether he will have them made from time to time. He's got three sets in stock now. You could just start with the idlers from Mike and upgrade to the UltraMaxxed if necessary. I'd say it also depends on the motor/ESC. For the HV-Maxx, the UltraMaxxed isn't needed IMO.

RC-Monster Mike 09.11.2005 08:08 PM

The UM gears are heavy, too. The single speed and idl;ers make for a nearly bullet proof tranny, so I truly don't see the need for the ultramaxxed gears, unless you are running absolutely sick power and drive it like its stolen( the Novak is nowhere near "sick power").

coolhandcountry 09.11.2005 08:31 PM

booda Are you running the jumbo kong tires? The ones that are like 8 inches tall. They going to put alot of strain on the diffs if so. You may think about going ue diffs. If not such a big tire you should be good with the aluminum diff cups. I don't think you need the ultra maxxed gears for tranny. I put some power on mine and have had no problem. Just don't get the light weight input shaft. They won't take the punishment.

booda 09.11.2005 09:35 PM

o.k. thanks, Ill go with the idler arms from mike, then see what happens.
mike you said HV MAXX is nowear near sick power. Im new at this but this thing seems pretty mean for a bolt on kit. But if I did want more power ( in other words if the nitro trucks keep out running my son) what would you sudgest with a mid range budget? Now I know the big tires slow it down. we dont run those when he wants to race, but they are our favorite to play with at home, and they grab everyones eye too lol.

RC-Monster Mike 09.11.2005 11:14 PM

9920/7xl/heatsink-clamp will make the Novak look like the titans.

Yeah, I trust you. And I'm glad about it, and happy for you guys.
Two thumbs up from me. Good choice on the RC vehicle, btw. BL Monsters are all the fun!

The regear formula is no big deal, just compare the stock tire circumfence to your big tires circumfence, and change the gearing in the same ratio.

Let us know if you need some more help.

booda 09.12.2005 10:12 AM

Cool thanks guys, I have to be ohnest with you since Im new, the HV MAXX looked a little more simple for me to install. I currently have a t maxx but after building A.J.'s e maxx, and looking at your site I would love to take my time and build one BAD G MAXX lol, but I would need your help as I go.Ill get ajs going good then start building one for me and him to share lol ( just for the nitros )

P.S. I realy thank all of you for your time you dont know how much youve helped me, and mike Im on your E.M. list for the idler gears thanks your great, Aaron (aka Booda)

Dafni 09.12.2005 10:55 AM

You're welcome. This is the best place for any info concerning EMaxx and Brushless.

The Gorilla chassis is a nice piece of workmanship. Great value. Combine this with the fast shipping and nice prices you'll get from Mike, and the support and help you'll find here, and you'll have a totally awesome RC with no more un-answered questions. But be warned, this stuff is highly addictive :)

coolhandcountry 09.12.2005 11:21 AM

Don't worry booda. We all had to start somewhere. Get us a pic of your rc. I like big tires. Glad to have another fella rcer around. The 7xl mike was talking about. It will make the novak look like a single titan on your truck. :) It gets my vote. Good luck on rcing. I think daf is right. It is addictive.

booda 09.12.2005 12:06 PM

Yea, my wife would agree with you it is adictive. I tell her its my guy thing lol she understands. Ill have to fiqure out how to send ya some picts of his truck, but Ill wait and get you some of it in action. (waiting on his ultra diffs now). If I would have known about this site before I would have bought them from mike, but Im sure Ill be purchasing from him quite a bitt lol. thanks, Aaron

It truely is addictive!! Dafni and I have even got a therapist for our problems.. (some call him Mike..)

I'm sorry for cutting in so late, but perhaps you find some gearing help in the XLS sheet i included, it just is a simple layout, but it might help you out.

Based on stock gears/diffs.. it can be changed very easy to UE diffs.. (other ratio)

booda 09.12.2005 11:10 PM

Thanks, for the cheat sheet serum. :)

attached is a modified spreadsheet with lists for some motor, tires, diff gearing, and includes 1st and 2nd gear speeds if interested. For those without Excel, Microsoft does have an Excel Viewer that would work and is free.

Dafni 09.13.2005 05:31 PM

Very nice sheets, boys! Thanks.
I always wanted to make some proper excell sheets, but this program makes me dizzy. I always did it just with a pocket calculator.
This sheet will make my life so much easier:D

I wish I had uploaded the proper spreadsheet. Please give this one a try and if a mod can delete the previous one, I would appreciate it. I can add more tires and motors if someone wants.

Rene, I was wondering about the 1.05 volts versus the 1.2. I was also wondering about incorporating Lipo into the equation, but I don't know what if anything would need to be changed. I haven't gone down the Lipo path yet.

booda 09.13.2005 11:03 PM

You guys are amazing thanks, Aaron:D

mt_enthusiast 09.15.2005 11:05 PM

@serum, is 1.05 volts a better value to use than 1.2 per cell? I'm just trying to learn more!

RC-Monster Mike 09.15.2005 11:09 PM

yes, it is more accurate voltage under a moderate load.

mt_enthusiast 09.15.2005 11:24 PM

thanks. I knew there had to be a reason. :D Is there a more accurate KV for the HV-Maxx to add into the spreadsheet or is 4400 good to use for estimating?

RC-Monster Mike 09.17.2005 08:45 AM

4400 is not very accurate for the HV. I don't really know what is, but 4400 definately isn't. Under a load, it probably drops to 3000 rpm/volt.

Serum 09.17.2005 08:46 AM

yeah, that's what i thought too.. It can't be under the 295 watts of load...

mt_enthusiast 09.18.2005 11:54 AM

what about the Reedy Neo One? I couldn't find any information on it other than discussion threads that it is 6500KV.

mt_enthusiast 09.27.2005 10:35 PM

updated spreadsheet for gearing

I added some more items, and I updated it to allow custom entries.

coolhandcountry 09.28.2005 07:41 AM

IT doesn't work for me. What program do you use to open it? I got it un zipped.

mt_enthusiast 09.28.2005 07:53 AM

I used Excel 2003. The Excel Viewer from Microsoft can be used although I haven't tested it, and my guess is you won't be able to save modified values. OpenOffice and StarOffice should work too.
