My custom Sand Rail build
3 Attachment(s)
Well while looking through pictures from the RCX show a few weeks ago I saw the pictures of the RC4WD sand rail and fell in love with it but as I am converting a XB8 to brushless at the minute there was no way in hell I could afford it so I started to build my own:smile:
The whole project to date has cost me nothing but hopefully over the summer I might get a Sidewinder to drop into it although it weighs a ton so a bigger motor than the 5700/4600 may be needed. The chassis is welded together with a small inverter welder and the tubing is actually from the old shelf in a fridge that I found (i cut/melted the white plastic off it) Plans for the chassis were drawn up on a very small piece of paper during a perticulary boring chemistry lesson but as I am not one for mesurements none were taken and most of the work was done by eye. (thats why the roof is slightly lopsided:wink:) I am using a Cen Mini Madness tranny and most of the rest of the bits are from my Tamiya Dark Impact. These photos show the first tube welded on and the wheels mocked up. More will come soon. |
Get one of the clone HPI baja buggies and convert it to brushless. Probably much easier and 1/5th scale buggy with paddles is AWESOME.

I don't know if you have realised but its 1/10. It will also probably never see sand:wink:
All the welding done and starting to make the panels: |
Nice, keep us updated, I might look at doing something like this later on

Here is where I am at now, chassis painted and panels on. I still need to make an esc mount and some sort of battery holder but that will have to wait untill my A123 packs come it. (Sorry the pictures are rather dark, I'll get better ones tomorrow)

|
That is one hell of a 5B there!
If only it were electric now! :diablo: :na: |
That is impressive! Looks Awesome
|
Thanks everyone. Didn't mean to hi-jack this thread...... but thought it would be appropriate to post here.
The cage for the baja was built by the same guy who built the small 1/10 rail, John Boyer. The 1/10th sandrail I have is the original Boyer built rail that RC4WD is now copying/have rights to. Gotta add that the paint was done by me. Electric baja....mmmm Is there even a electric motor big enough for the baja? If so I will seriously look into it. |
Neu 2215....they can put out about 10K-15K watts....or over 10hp.
|
isn't this big enoph? http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=5139
