Mamba Monster dead?

I was out shooting some video, slowed down turned around and the esc cut out. It will not power back on, it will not link to castle link anymore but the fan will spin when connected to castle link. the fan will twitch a little when a battery is applied.

Temp when it cut off was 121, motor 123, battery 93, ambient 88 after 15 minutes or running in dry bumpy grass.

entjoles 05.09.2008 07:48 PM

WANTED....DickyT esc. killer

sorry to hear this, maybe a wire or connector is bad

remind me to not let you drive my truck:lol:

DickyT 05.09.2008 07:53 PM

Probably but I'm hesitant to crack the case open in fear of voiding the warranty. It does not have that ominous smell of death, it just will not go. the truck did take a good high speed cartwheel, but if stopped working in reverse not after the cartwheel. I will have video footage on the web in a bit.

big greg 05.09.2008 07:56 PM

i was afraid of you killing it soon dicky!

DickyT 05.09.2008 08:06 PM

This truck is cursed. Fried an MM just by powering it on (on 5s, yeah my risk). Fried a Quark who knows how and badly! And I will not say fried a Mamba Monster, it does not smell fried, it just died.

big greg 05.09.2008 08:13 PM

yea i seen your other bad luck, my e-revo killed a mm after running like 2000 mah through it, it just stopped working like yours, luckily castle is awesome for that though!

lxmuff 05.09.2008 08:17 PM

Check your switch. It seems to slide easily. I already replaced mine with an old MM switch.

DickyT 05.09.2008 08:22 PM

Switch is fine. It should link to castle link, switch or not and will not. I'd love to mess with it and figure it out but I do not want to void the warranty on it. Patrick, Joe, Bernie, can I crack this thing open?

edit: verified switch is fine, When I flip in on the fan twitches but does not spin, when off it stops.

DickyT 05.09.2008 08:31 PM

video footage being uploaded to YouTube now. I will post in general section and put a link here for those that do not read that section. Going to put my buggy back together now......

big greg 05.09.2008 08:32 PM

sorry dicky...

skellyo 05.09.2008 08:33 PM

Hmm, try it with an external Rx pack and the red wire removed from the Rx harness...might have killed the internal BEC.

DickyT 05.09.2008 08:34 PM

meh, such is life. I dub this Revo "ESC Killer" I think it really does not want to be electric.

Just to add a note, no binding, mesh is fine, temps were right on par, just typical DickyT luck or a cursed Revo.

That should have no effect with it linking to castle link, but after I get the buggy in one piece I will. I need something to drive at the company picnic tomorrow.

skellyo 05.09.2008 08:37 PM

You're right, it shouldn't matter when linking it with the Castle Link. Hmm...still sounds like something with the low voltage/control section of the ESC if your fan won't spin up. Heck, put a voltmeter across the red and black on the Rx harness when you plug your batt in. It should be 5+volts.

JeffEmbracedDC 05.09.2008 08:45 PM

As far as I know, opening the case doesn't void the warranty. It was designed to be opened for easy replacement of the fan. Though - check with CC as the final word on this. I'm not positive.

Anyway, good luck! I hope you get it figured out.

-Jeff

1.47v.....

rx pack connected does the same thing.

big greg 05.09.2008 09:08 PM

hmmm nice vid until that point, sucks man

Sounds like a partial short in the low voltage section of the control board. I'd say it's bad enough to warrant getting an RMA and sending it back to Castle.

DickyT 05.09.2008 10:55 PM

Yeah, I'll call Monday morning. I was wrong the fan does not come on at all when plugged into Castle link, but does twitch when the power is turned on. I'm done messing with it until Monday.

dubkatz 05.09.2008 11:42 PM

ouch i hope we dont have another traxxas evx failure rate on our hands. I got one on the way too, cause i smoked my mm i hope i dont regret getting one before all the bugs are worked out.

DickyT 05.09.2008 11:48 PM

I'm cool with being one of the, if not the first consumer to kill one. I troubleshoot for a living, being part of any bug fixing just sits well with me for some reason. I have a tc4 and zx-5 sp to keep me occupied while this get's sorted out.

DickyT 05.10.2008 10:07 AM

My CL issue may be the CL it's self. No idea how it stopped working, but it will not link with the MM in my buggy either. red light only on the CL, lights come on the MM, will not link, usb direct to MM works fine.

Five-oh-joe 05.10.2008 12:35 PM

The MM doesn't use the link via the receiver plug though, so I would imagine it's not supposed to work with the castle link like that (if that's what you are saying). If you have a mamba 25 or similar, give that a shot.

Pdelcast 05.10.2008 06:31 PM

DickeyT --

It could be that the switching BEC failed for some reason (infant mortality possibly?) Call in on Monday and we'll get you taken care of.

Sparky 05.10.2008 06:50 PM

Me too! Just my luck! My Mamba Monster died after about 2 min. I’m running 6s with a Neu 1515 1.5y. I never really put any load on it. So I think it was the BEC. When I turn on the switch the fan just twitches a little. I have a race in two weeks so I ordered a second one today with an external BEC. I hope this works. I’m sending it back Monday. I hope I just happened to get a lemon.

johnrobholmes 05.10.2008 07:13 PM

Mine worked well today, I put it in a crawler so the BEC got a good workout.

Robert 05.10.2008 07:30 PM

We're not off to a good start. :( I'm glad I held off on the beta's

Damn, unlucky to hear. Hope I don't get any issues :eyes:

Just go Play 05.10.2008 10:03 PM

Hey Dicky have you considered consulting a voodoo priestess about getting rid of the dark cloud over your ESC's? :diablo:

Sadly yesterday my MGM let out a puff of smoke that david copperfield could have made a 747 materialize from. Since I had planned on waiting for castle to release the motor combos and all the pre-sales are sold out I'm likely now looking at 6 weeks until I can get a new controller. At least you should be able to get yours repaired or replaced sooner then that.

big greg 05.10.2008 10:10 PM

that also sucks play, i like the dark cloud comment he he

Just go Play 05.10.2008 10:18 PM

Well on the upside I decided to try ordering a MM from Mike again (after getting the out of stock notice yesterday) and was able to place an order and use the 2nd discount code! So maybe now I'll only be down for 4 weeks or less if I'm lucky.

I tell ya if I had the kind of luck that Dicky has had lately I'd have to tell the old lady I was going back to custom motorcycles so I could save some $$$.

I will let you know the two minutes the Monster ran it was incredibly smooth. I have been running the MGM controller and it made the MGM look like a piece of junk. The MGM runs so rough; however my MGM has been running strong for 5 months now. I really think it was the 6s on the BEC. I had been setting up the steering servos. The braking was really good also. It makes a funny noise during the braking.
Has anyone else out there been running it on 4s or 5s with out any problems?

Mine is running great on 5s lipo and 6s2p a123. No problems so far. (Knocking on wood)

Electric Eel 05.11.2008 04:09 PM

Been running mine with a Neu 1527 on 6S with no problems yet. And this is on a heavy Savage with a 5955 333-oz steering servo and a 645 braking servo. So far the BEC is holding up. Fingers crossed!

Sparky 05.11.2008 04:56 PM

Good! I'm glad to hear that. I hope these few problumes are was just flukes.
