Project: E-Mugen MBX5-T
Been thinking about this for awhile, and i'm doing it!
Already sold the engine, pipe, and starter box. Nitro stuff is GONE..... These pics are from a few weeks ago but... HERES THE VICTIM: http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...2/DSC04851.jpg http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...2/DSC04850.jpg http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...2/DSC04849.jpg (Sorry a little dirty) http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...52/e-mugen.jpg Plans are so far, MMM I want a Neu, but I had to get a 8XL.. boooo. RCM Motor Mount(Maybe Castle Conversion? We'll see.) Mod 1 13T pinion Maxamps packs? truerc? flightpower? Pretty open to ideas now.. Much more details coming soon.... Feel free to post what you want....whether you want to say I suck, or whether you think this will be a straight up nitro killer! Peace steve |
well first off... you suck!
I have been wanting to do one of theses or the st-rr for a while just low on funds. I recommend flightpower (may be biased cause i own flightpower stuff) but have heard any enerland based cells are good. So in your list that is only flightpower. I have maxamps and they dont seem to perform nearly as well as my flighpower. Oh and go neu when you can. I finally switched (from an 8xl) to a neu 1515 1y and the smoothness and power is incredible. Just my .02 |
Hmmm....You don't need it, send the truggy to my unique disposal facility where it can be disposed of safely.
|
sans a new chassis and custom driveshafts, I see few other options for your proposed layout. But I personally hate mounting components on anything other than flat on the chassis and that goes fr the Rx as well. An alternative location, if you have a micro Rx like the spectrums, is in between the battery and the rear driveshaft. I assume you'll be using 5 Ah enerland cells so you'll find the battery cannot go that far forward. The weight will be screwed up if you choose a shorter taller pack pushed forward too much. I just converted a very similar truggy and can send you a pic.
|
You're on the right track, Steve. I'll keep an eye on your project.
Go for the RC-M parts! :rules: |
converted

Here is a RCM converted mbx5t - the battery box isn't installed(but obviously will go under the battery). The esc will be mounted behind the motor and the rx will likely sit on the chassis in front of the battery or perhaps on the steering servo. The left/right balance is near perfect with this setup and the entire truck is just under 10 pounds with the 5s 5000mah PQ pack shown. :)
|
IIRC mike may start making them but you can go for a rc production designs centre diff top plate which has a nice extension for mounting the ESC...

cool.. Sandblasted aluminum..

Stuff is priced real well also I might add. And thanks for posting in my thread Mike! Means alot! I will attempt to duplicate the setup you have shown, I will play around with a few other things also. Once the parts get here i'll get some more pics:intello: And man, I have never been so exited in a long time i'm going to add!!!! |
|
i will try to ship the clamp tommorow, i am also throwing in my 9xl which had a magnet came off the shaft and i reglued it , it works but made my esc. run hot , give it a shot if you want for fun or just keep the motor for a paper weight:lol:
hope your build goes well |
Sweeeeet entjoles! Your really hooking me up here:intello:
If you ever need anything, please let me know!! I will be more than glad to return the favor! Anyways got a quick question, I also bought a CC BEC along with my MM speedo, and I thought the BEC would help me run higher voltages with less stress on the speedo? Or is that a ubec? lol. Should have read up before I guess. |
its the right one, dont know the diff. between the two
yeah if you ever want to go to a track and run i would do that, i plan on racing my xt8 on the 14th @ ricks in wis. |
I heard about ricks over at the mnnitroseries.com forums. Nothing like free track time. I hope to make it out there at least a few times this summer.
|
Got all the parts in the mail, heres my problem though,

You could just get a glitchbuster.... http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXNRE0&P=WR
This works nice on MM too for 4s stability http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXKKN3&P=M |
one thing to check before you send it in is your solder joints, if you soldered it with a 40 + watt iron you should be ok, and then it needs to be sent into castle
|
Thanks eric!, will send it in later this week when i have time.
Anyways my parts came yesterday, installed them VERY LATE last night, and I did a slight test run today:) PICS!!!:(Will get video this weekend most likely, and hopefully.) (NOTE ENTJOLES'S MOTOR HEAT SINK CLAMP!) http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...2/DSC01948.jpg http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...2/DSC01947.jpg I just need a battery mount now, been zip tying the lipos to the chassis through the flywheel hole. The screws that keep the mud guards on sheared through my heat wrap on the lower lipo, not good. Put a nice dent in the lipo in the process. One slight problem though. Even when running the receiver pack, I am experiencing the truck going "out of range" despite the fact that the truck isn't anymore than 100ft away. This worries me, not sure if it is the receiver, (probably is) but it's a problem. I got the receiver along with my DX2 a few years back and have been switching it between all my cars since. I guess it has finally died? Hm...i'll have to rob the hobby shop for a new spekky receiver soon LOL. Even when just testing the setup in my small backyard and street, I am BLOWN AWAY, by the torque and speed it pushes out. Keep in mind i'm only running 4S and a Feigao 8XL. Now I couldn't even IMAGINE the amount of power those Neu's and 6S lipos are putting out...Compared to my V-Spec, i'd say there is a 30% power increase...NO KIDDING! Already very happy as you can see....everybody should run BL... |
Be careful those battery leads are very long with that Y adapter. CC says no more than 12" without extra caps.
|
Just measured it and it is about 7 1/2 inches. I think it'll be fine but i'll definatly shorten up those battery wires.
The MM is running very nice and cool by the way, only about 105 was the highest temp I got. |
looking good
glad its running, The best thing about brushless is that its not nitro! |
Haha....thats for sure. No tuning, it feels great. I'm also not waking up the neighbors.
entjoles, according to your sig you run a 5S with your MM? What mods do you exactly do to the speedo? Do you just run caps, fan, receiver pack? |
What you mentioned is really all you need to do to the MM steve. However, the newer MM's don't seem to like 5s very much. The older one's (I think they had higher quality or more FET's... not 100% sure though) were able to run 5s pretty well.
The MBX is looking great btw. |
Well i'll just be running 4S now until I can get a MMM, then i'll be running 5S most likely.
Thanks for all the help people. |

Well I just noticed something.
After taking the truck out for a run (ESC has a 4S or 12V cutoff btw) I temped everything and the batts were 120, ESC 140, motor 140. Not bad? I didn't think so. I stopped running after about 10 minutes, way before the voltage cutoff would have come on. Usually get about 20 minutes of runtime (approx.) And then the next day I was going to charge up the batteries when suddenly I noticed the packs looked a little "bigger" than usual. I picked one up and set it on the table and it sounded funny, like it was hallow. I pressed down on the center and it felt crunchy. Great, like I need this to deal with also:diablo:No running until late august now until i get new lipos now i guess. (They are Maxamps packs BTW....) Does this stuff happen to any of you guys? Never had a lipo fail like this before, expecially since I didn't do anything out of the ordinary. I didn't treat these any differently than i've ever treated any other lipos and I have never had any problems up until now... |
sorry man that blows, never happened to me but I do ponder that scenario in my thoughts of what my lipos are doing while im sleeping lol.. I need to get an ammo box
|
You will notice after reading on the forum for a little longer that many people here REALLY don't like Max Amps. There are tons and tons of puffed Max Amps packs that occurred throughout the forum. Hopefully lincpimp will chime in as I know he has killed quite a few.
|
I would say 85% of the people here DONT like max amps (sorry if you do), why? Because of this prob LOL, they over rate, and over price the packs (sounds familiar? rcbros......) And I know lots of people here will agree with me, especially when tru rc packs are cheaper, and work better. Do you get why I always said this now?
How ever, that sucks, puffing lipos is never fun, but a excuse to upgrade to 5s?:na::lol::party::whistle::mdr::yipi::gasp: |
Man...I only thought they were that good until this happened. Don't get me wrong they are GREAT packs, I tried the exact same tru rc pack and compared the two. I thought the maxamps pack did have slightly better punch and power, but now? Just pissed. I payed $140 for those two 4000hv 2S lipos, and i've only had them for about 5 Mo. and they poop on my truck. Not what I need right now.
It is an excuse to buy a 5S lipo... :) (and I need a charger)but now I think i'll just have to wait for the MMM, and some cash. ANYBODY got a MMM they can give up and sell??!?!? |

Just tried running 14 NIMH cells. The problem is that i'm having real bad acceleration and brakes, also cogging is BEYOND horrible...anybody know what's up?
|
did you change the MM settings to nimh battery ?
|
Yep I changed the cutoff...
|
if you are running an AM radio that could be a major problem
|
I'm running DSM.
Tried again with 12 cells. Cogging isn't as bad, but now the ESC is heating up to 130 degrees after one speed pass?? Acceleration and braking is still a problem also! This doesn't make sense. Never had mystery problems like this before. Motor is running real cool, and the batteries are fine ... |
Quote:
Anybody know?? |
Hot ESC often times means over-geared... what gearing are you running at the moment?
|
13T pinion and stock spur...46T maybe? Whatever the stock mugen spur is....
Honestly if anything this is undergeared. It wasn't doing this before when I was running the 4S lipo. The speedo after running out the 4S lipo had a max temp of 140degrees, and that was after 20 minutes of running. |
A poor connection, perhaps? Do you use connectors or direct solder?
|
I use deans. They seem like they are in good condition..?
