Hay guys I scored!
And just wanted to pass on the find to others.. I’ve been using two bags of sand while chagrining my Lipo’s and never felt comfortable, so as luck would have it I cam across this bag that is specially designed to charge Lipo batteries in it. i use a metal bucket with sand in it....

I use a lipo specific charger

I don't really use any. All the fire videos seen in youtube was made by idiots. I still have to see any of my good lipos puff. The only one that really puffed on me for no reason at all was a Max Amps 3S pack. If abused any sort of energy storage device will fail in its own fabulous way. I've blown and burned many caps, NiXX and old lithium cells just to see what would happen and to be honest all of them go bad if abused. Just use proper charging methods and watch them just like you would watch your old NiXX packs.

Edit: BTW, I'm still using my old Astro Flight 109 with the old software and the new chargers from what I heard are much better and can even charge at 2C safely.

At home I use a small barbecue grill, not as cool looking or easy as a sack tho.

And really, a blowing NiMH can be more dangerous because of the enclosed can and resulting flying metal shrapnel.

Like lutach said, any cell can be dangerous if not used right.

I also don't use anything... is it bad to charge the pack while it is in the truck? I do this quite often actually. I guess if anything goes wrong, the truck will get destroyed as well...

I have never used a lipo sack or anything else. I just keep my eye on them and try not to do anything stupid. Like lutach said, the youtube videos were made by idiots (it always kind of reminded me of beavis and butthead).

Conventional wisdom says to remove the pack from the vehicle, but if you know the risks, go ahead. I do the same when in the field. At home, I charge in the sack on my bench.

I bought the sack and have yet to use it. My only precaution is I charge them on a old porcelain plate instead of on the floor like other batts. Right now, all mine are laying on the sack, so Im getting some use out if it, lol!

I 've had several puff , but it was a storage issue. I also punctured one while playing on a trash pile, but managed to save my truck.

Lol... its funny to hear what everyone uses. I've never had a lipo swell or flame on me (knock on wood), but I still take precautions.
In the field, I just use a park bench or the concrete. At home I just charge it in a large old wok. Yes... I said wok... as seen in "Yan can cook". Its made of cast iron, has a thick lid, high side walls, and a long wooden handle. Perfect contraption if the lipo ever goes up in flames. I'm sure pretty much any pot with high sides would work great as well. Just don't steal your wife's favorite pot.

I don't use anything either... I only use an elastic band to let me know that it needs to be charged... :mdr:

I use the liposack just to ease my mind, it's better than nothing .

Wow that’s quite a variable in opinions.. Let’s see something, out of the 13 commented members this is how it looks so far.

• 6 and ½ members do use some form of protection, the half comes from Duster_360 (laying them on top) really doesn’t count! :lol:.

• 6 members don’t use protection, other than carefully monitoring and using proper charging procedures. (as all Lipo owners always should).

Yeah I honestly don't pay any extra special attention to my lipo's. I just make sure the settings are correct and let them go. I don't charge them unattended, but I always hook up my thermometer so if anything goes wrong the charger will start screaming and let me know. One thing I do for all my packs when I charge them is I have them rest on a piece of granite tile, since it is much less flammable than carpet.

I do not use any sort of protection while charging. Never had an issue either.

My Lipos also don't get to see the inside of a fire-resistant sack. The only Lipo fire I had was the result of a full 12v from a 30amp power supply going into a single 1650mah Lipo cell, which I purposely did.

All of my good Lipos are either sitting on my workbench or are mounted in a buggy/truck. A couple which have puffed are resting in an ammo can I found at my grandma's house.

I have the same lipo sack, and the ONLY reason is because its required at my track.... I dont use it for any other reason, to me, lipos are just batts, any batt can be a ticking time bomb, and dangerous, and I dont think lipos are any worse then NIMH's, IMO there safer.....

I'm using the lipo-sack if I am doing other thisngs around and just checking in on the packs as they charge. At the track I use the sack just beacuse most of the time I have one on the charger as I am on the track so I am out of sight. There are plenty of people around if there was a problem though, but I figure its at least being semi responsible.

I ahve never had a charging issue with a lipo either. The only lipos I ever puffed were from a severe crash or battery holding device in the vehicle failing. I build them much stronger now than I used to so I havent had a problem in a long time.

i have a brand new maxamps 2s 2100 only ran it for 10 minutes in my mini and then recharged it,i got it out the other day and was gonna check the balance on it before putting it in my friend's new tlt1 crawler he got off ebay to test and the damn thing kept giving me a lowvoltage alarm on my charger so i grabbed the votlmeter and sure enough one cell was gone and the other only had 2.6 volts in it, i dunno what the hell happened its not really swollen, thats the only lipo ive had a problem with.

but i still leave it in the bucket when charging just because you never know right and i forget what im doing half the time and go outside and leave it alone in the house for more than an hour.

I was reading in this thread and I saw everybody was talking about not using protection than I noticed it was about Lipos...nevermind.......:-0

I didn't use anything for protection, then one day at the track I saw a genuine LiPo fire during a charge. It was awful. It took out a table and looked for a short time like it was going to be much worse. It changed me, from that day forward I've used the RE Sack (pictured in the first post of this thread) I also store my LiPos in a fireproof safe when in my house. In my head I know that the really bad things happen when they are overcharged but having seen how unbelievably flammable they are, I have to use protection. Of course I use the right kind of charger on the right settings.

I don't doubt that they are safe and that other batteries also have risks but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I always charge mine in a lipo sack, and at home I also put the lipo sack in a metal toolbox. I haven't had anything go wrong charging a lipo, but I'm not going to stand in the garage for an hour + watching a battery charge. And at racing you can't watch it all the time, because of marshaling and things like that. So I feel a bit better having it in the lipo sack.
The only lipo charging accident I have seen was when another racer was using the same charger for the lipo's in his G2R and the nimh's in his 1/10th buggy. He forgot to take the charger off nimh settings and plugged in his 2s 4800mah orion pack. Luckily he saw the lipo swell up and unplugged it before we got to see fireworks.
Lipo sacks or other protection is good, but prevention is more important. The biggest thing for safety I think is to always use a charge through balancer, and always double check your charger setting before you hit the start button.

I took one of my wife's cooking pots to charge / store LiPos in.

Now I need the protection... :lol:
