30mph? How?
Ok, so a State Trooper moved in across the street since he was displaced from Hurricane Katrina. I finally caught up with him to use his radar. I made some passes for him and the best he shot was 30mph. When he told me that, I looked like :W: . I was hurt.
My Emaxx: http://photobucket.com/albums/a184/nitrostarter/ Torpedo Chassis UE 6 Spyder diffs FLM Bulks Dace Wing Towers PL Suspension Kit UE SuperShocks (4) MIP Fr, Rr, Cen. CVDs Hitec 645MG servo RPM Stablemaxx Titan wheels Bowites Tires Feigao 9L/Bk18120 Rx Pack 14 GP3300's RC Monster Idlers Hitec Aggressor 3-Channel Radio Could that radar be right? I thought people were hitting 40mph easily with a 9L? I need to look for a GPS. I also used Aqwut's excel calc. sheet and came up with like 29.11 mph. I thought I was missing something so I ignored it. |
What gearing are you running?
|
If the motor was running at a good temperature (indicating proper gearing), my best guess would be that because radar guns are made for real cars, the radar gun couldn't get good enough contact with the E-Maxx to give an accurate reading.
EDIT: I just read that you said that with the spreadsheet your speed came out to 29.11mph. There has got to be something going on with your gearing. Go up a few teeth on the pinion, and that should do it. |
howd ya gear it? Maybe you need a new setup! how about i buy that esc off of ya and u can get somethign new! lol
|
I meant to put the gearing in there. Slipped my mind. I'm runnign 16/66.
The motor gets pretty hot after a full run, but I wouldnt know exact temps. He was shooting my Maxx on a freshly charged pack so the motor was ice cold for the first run or so. I'm thinking about buying a 14T and 18T to try on the gearing to see if it helps. nbcaz- You dont give up do you? lol. |
Does your Warrior 9920 get hot? If it doesn't, then that means that you could gear up to make the motor run more efficiently so that it won't get as hot.
|
Its a BK18120 and I have a PC fan on it. It doesnt get hot from what I can feel, except the 4 capcitors on the end do get warm. I Cant grab the motor tho, it gets hot.

What kind of tires are you running as well nitro? That makes a difference as well. I came up your final drive to be 23.5 to 1. If you running second gear.
|
I wouldn't mess with a 14. I'd go for 18 and 19 for sure. Check for binding. This could be your problem. How old are those gp3300 pretty new?
|
Re: 30mph? How?
Cool, he's running bow ties.

I think you right big air. A jump up in gearing may help. Not sure how I missed the tires :o I would just keep an eye on your temps. You may want to invest in a temp gun. They from 20-30 depends on where and kind. Good investment. You can't hold some thing that is 140 f and it is in the safe range. Just a suggestion.
|
Well I think my slipper is going so I'm think about going to the Strobe slipper. If I use the Strobe, I have to use the 51T spur, so what pinion should I go with then?
I just bought the GP's in July so I dont think its them. My truck rolls pretty freely. So you guys think I should go up in gearing? My 18120 stays like cold with the fan on, just the motor could melt an iceberg after a run. Mike do you carry temp. guns? |
12/51 will put you about where you are now with 16/66. From the calculations in Serum's spreadsheet with the Maxx Bowties, it is interesting that you were within a couple MPH, 27 versus 30.
|
Try 13-14/51. That should get your speed to where it should be.
|
If we're calculating 27-30 mph, how are people getting 40mph?
I'm not complaining about the performance, I love it. Its crazy fast acceleration and speed. I'm just looking for a little more top speed. |
I've been trying to get some speed runs done with the GPS strapped in, but it has been raining all weekend. There are theoretical calculations and then there is real world. Serum's calculation had 1.05 volts per cell instead of 1.2. This is an example of what really happens. RCM Mike said 1.05 was more realistic with NiMH under load. The kV rating on the motors might not be accurate either under load. Temperatures look to be a better indicator of what truly can be done to fine tune gearing.
|
Well it looks like I'll be going with the Strobe slipper soon, so I'll be running 12 or 14/51 since there isnt a 13T.
I also think I'm going to pick up a GPS or find someone's I can use. I just dont think the radar is too accurate. |
If the theortical gearing agrees with the speed your getting, it can't be that far off the mark..
|
How I got the 40 mph was a 7xl with 22 pinion and 66 spur 18cells. I think it was a little more than 40 LOL
|
Running my excel sheet says that you'll top out around 33 mph in second gear. You just got the wrong gearing. However, if you go with an 18 tooth or 20 tooth, you should be around high 30's and if you go to 22, you'll hit 40 then. However, when you run a pinion that large, you'll easily draw 100 amps or more in second gear so be careful. I end up running mostly in first gear when I have large pinions.
BTW, the radar gun is very accurate. I have both radar gun and GPS and they always give me the same number. |
So 14/51 or 18/66 should do better, give higher top speed, and motor should run cooler? Those 2 gear ratio's I just mentioned ar about the same right?
|
yeah that's pretty much the same gearing.. but that's good for 36MPH.... what diffs are you using the supermaxx or the regular... regular is 2.85:1 and supermaxx is 3.31:1
try goin' to a 20 tooth... |
I'm using UE diffs.
|
then i think you have it WAY under geared. not possitive on that though...
|
I can do 12-15 gears with 5mm bore now-no problems. I will update the site to reflect this. I can get temp guns, too.
the radar gun doesn't lie. Your gearing is on the short side, so more speed is definately available. |
7xl, 14 cells, hyper7, 15/51 in 2nd gear with Moab 40 tires calculated as 37MPH..........GPS max MPH when running on pavement read 36.3MPH.
When I run this gearing in grass and dirt hard, ESC temp is 130F and motor is 170F. I'm afraid to gear higher on the pinion with these temps. Is this reasonable? |
The grass is hard on you. If you want more put 16 cells on. The esc temp is good the motor is a little warm. You could try a 16 pinion just keep a close eye on temps. I was just thinking of asking you about your set up to. Weird
|
Yeah, Gass is hard.. unless you're running 36 cells like ProMod.. hahaha.. his truck, was flyin' on grass.... Try 20 Teeth... :)

If you run a brushless geared to low it will run hot as well. You also have a big tire.
|
smaller tires? lol, i got a solution! sell ur esc to me adn buy a bigger better system! lol, j/p. Try out different gears till ya feel comfortable with its performance. But 15 bux a gear will kinda be a money pit! i suggest resaeaching th best poissible teeth!
|
Actually now that you mentioned it.. the guys at trilordy zip tied an airplane on top of the maxx.. and had pretty good lift.. hahaha... They have a video of it too.. I forgot the name of the vid..
|
I like the stock max tires..... and the 40 series...
the big 6.5, 7, 8 inch tires are really hard on the diffs... and Tranny... I killed one of my Supermaxx gears using the 7" hotbodies wheels... since then, I just stuck to my regular maxx tires... Maybe my M/T being 20+ lbs didn't help.. :) |
I dont like the look of those 6.5" and taller tires. They just look too big. The biggest I'm going is 40 Series Dirt Hawgs at most. 6" is plenty of tire for me.
Looks like I'll be ordering a Strobe slipper and a 14,15T pinion along with it. |

Damn. Them guys are nuts. Absolutely 100% nuts. Really funny to watch though.
|
It doesn't work for me. I got the dirt hawgs. I kind of like them for all around bashing and running.
|
the 40 series seems to be best... I like them.... .I really like the mashers... They're grippy as H*LL...
|
Dang, that's a gigantic vid at 76 meg, luckily my cable modem is cranking out 450k/sec. It's taking a while though, of course, for me a while is more than a minute! 3 minutes later, I got a giant vid to watch.....
Ha! Another great Trilordy vid, those guys are certified idiots! :D |
