s maxx build

well the old 2.5 bit the dust so i decided to start up a little project,
a brushless smaxx. with direct drive.

i was going to use a feagio 12xl but it would be to long and not low enough kv.

im going to run it on 12 nimh on a mm and im thinking a 1000 kv outrunner.

heres some pics of the start.

the threads on the input shaft will be cut off

this is my connector for motor to tranny dual set screws will hold it on to the flat spots on the imput shaft and two flat spots on the motor for set screws.

heres the bare frame

and heres the 2 speed that im going to lock inplace with jb weld.

thats were im at now. might get some more stuff done tomarrow.

suicideneil 06.28.2008 04:35 PM

Should be an interesting project, good luck dude.

BL_RV0 06.28.2008 04:40 PM

Cool project! Why didn't you tap the connector so that you'd have some more stability instead of cutting the tranny?

traxxasrevony 06.28.2008 06:13 PM

i could have but i think that would be weaker than the hex with set screws holding it inplace.

BL_RV0 06.28.2008 06:25 PM

Why not tap and set screw?

Here is slikeston34m's outrunner emaxx tranny setup. He replaced the outrunner shaft with a longer 5mm shaft, and placed the input gears on it.

traxxasrevony 06.28.2008 10:08 PM

hmmm interesting.

im going to get the jb weld tomarrow to lock the tranny i thought i had some but aperently not.

traxxasrevony 06.28.2008 11:38 PM

what would you all recommend for a outrunner i was thinking a axi 2820/10 its a little shorter than the 2826 and about the same kv.

traxxasrevony 06.29.2008 01:33 AM

also i dont have the right size bit to bore out the hole so i couldnt tap and set screw it fits perfect over the hex on the input shaft but is kinda sloppy on the threads nor do i have the correct tap to tap the connector. ill look in to that tho i got plenty of alum stock so i can try a few setups. my buddys got a lathe and hes got more taps and drill sizes than he knows what to do with. i just havent talked to him in about 2 years.

still lookin for options on a motor.

lincpimp 06.29.2008 01:39 AM

The 28 series axi motors will be too small. Go with the 4120 or 4130 motors. Century 650plus motors are good too. Sikeston34m would be the best bet for motor advise. Send him a PM about this thread.

traxxasrevony 06.29.2008 12:54 PM

i saw a thread somewheres where a guy used a 2826 on 4s i think and it was fine in a maxx im pretty sure.
i think it was on traxxas.

Sike used a 2826, but he retained the spur and pinion for addl reduction to make up for the losss of torque. He is the guy to talk to as he has done alot of testing with the tranny setup in the above photo. I use a 2826 in a direct to diff setup in a 10th scale 4wd, and that is about the limit for that size motor before it gets too hot. It may weight 3-4lbs. Your maxx will be twice that or more depending on battery choice.

traxxasrevony 06.29.2008 01:11 PM

that was it. ill look into the bigger motor like you sugjested but i need somthing with around 1000 kv. i might just have to turn to a inrunner because im kinda limited on esc

lincpimp 06.29.2008 01:49 PM

Here ya go, 1100kv: http://www.centuryheli.com/products/...5&prtnm=CNE274

traxxasrevony 06.29.2008 05:39 PM

my internet wouldnt load the century page for some reason when i was looking earlier but now it loads fine.

think that century you linked would work ok with the mm on 12 nimh or 4s lipo

yep, sike had one, and it was working great for him. I am not sure what kv it was. Should be fine with 4s lipo or 12 nimh.

traxxasrevony 06.29.2008 11:10 PM

i decieded to change my plans a little bit and remove the tranny all toegther and use a axi 4130/16 outrunner with a custom mount.
im kinda stuck on how to connect the motor shaft to the diff i was thinking using this kit http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail..._G-MAXX&cat=11 and boring out one of the drive cups to fit the 6 mill shaft think this would work. if not please throw up some ideas.

traxxasrevony 06.30.2008 03:12 PM

no one has any suggjestions.

lincpimp 06.30.2008 03:48 PM

I would see if Mike could make some of these adapters with 6mm bore instead of 8mm. http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...mrevov2coupler

That way you could use the revo spec center driveshafts, which should be strong enough to handle the outrunner.

traxxasrevony 06.30.2008 04:17 PM

just emailed mike about it. ill see what he says can be done

Those would be my choice. I have beat the crap out of my revo sliders and they have taken the abuse. Plus the metal adapters I linked to have set screws on either side, so they can clap to a round shaft well. I would still make soem flat spots for the set screws to bite on though.

traxxasrevony 06.30.2008 05:04 PM

yea i just need to wait til my next pay check to order the motor. i think im going with the axi 4130/16 at 365 kv on 12nimh lipo i should be around 40 which will be plenty in a 2wd truck. i should get my mm back from cc in about 2-3 weeks also so it should play out pretty good

traxxasrevony 07.02.2008 09:00 PM

welp been 2 days and no response from mike. looks like hes pretty busy. im thinking i should pm him just incase i didnt get his email back

Duster_360 07.02.2008 09:48 PM

I usually get an email confirming an order too, but haven't. I suspect he's gone on vacation, 4th of July week?

traxxasrevony 07.02.2008 10:00 PM

i just thought of that. ill wait till after the weekend seeing as i wount have money to spend on anything for anoter two weeks as i just shelled out money for a motor rebuild on my snowmobile.

traxxasrevony 08.04.2008 10:01 PM

well i finally ordered and recived the outrunner, i found a new snowmobile and the deal was too good to pass up so i put the project on hold for a bit. the motor is huge! i put it in my revo just to see how it went and using a 25 tooth pinion i saw a wopping 16 mph on radar with 12 nimh. it ran really well on the mmm but was horrible on the mm it cogged like crazy, and im using the same radio for both trucks anyways so im going to use the same esc for both trucks seeing as i cant use them at the same time anyways. that gives me the mm and stock tq3 radio for my axial ax-10 crawler kit i just ordered. ill have pics of the motor up tomarrow.
