charging batteries
 

I have the ice charger. I want to know if I make a Y connector. Can I charge 2 packs at once? It seems Like it should be possible. Has anyone tried this? If I can what settings do I change? I will be charging nimhs.

NiMh cells shouldn't be charged like that. They should only be charged in series (not parallel like what you want to do). If you do charge in parallel, then the peaking of the batteries won't come out right.

It only does 10 cells cab king. I was looking at maybe another charger. I need to get something with more battery capability. Thanks. Have you tried this metal man? What about it your raise or lower you mv peak detection? If I charge the batteries together then they will be run together.

surely as long as the charger can handle the total cell count of the two packs you can make a series y connector though, thats how I charge mine.

I can charge up to 25 cells so thats 4 stick packs in series.
I put the bulk of the charge in like that, and then peak them individual.
save a stack of time ;)
Is this bad for the cells??

I run 6-10 cells in a pack. I plan on getting a nother motor. I want to run 12 or so in a pack then. I think a new charger may be in order.

I would not be scared to do it your way cabking. It is like charging one big pack.

I haven't tried, but I have read that you aren't supposed to do it. All I remember is that charging NiMh cells in parallel won't allow them to peak properly. If you are going to get a new charger that can charge more than 10 cells, then you could take a look at the Great Planes Triton. It takes a 12v input (from a power supply or 12v battery), and can charge up to 24 cells. So, if you went with 24 cells on the motor you want to get, you could charge them all at the same time.

I should have got that over the ice. I looked at both of them. I have the power supply to. I may try it metal man. What do i have to loose. I try some of my cheap cells first. You want me to let you know how it goes metal man.

when I tried it with my 10amp power supply it would trip out.
I had to get a 20amp supply and that handles it well.

I was going to say that when you charge that many cells, the charger is pulling nearly 30 volts from a 12volt supply :eek:
so it needs the amps to make up the difference

If you ever want to charge LiPos (up to 4s), you will find the ICE to be a much better charger than the Triton because it can charge up to 8amps, but the Triton can only go up to 2.5amps (for Lipos). The ICE also has other features like motor break-in (which can also be used as a variable voltage power supply up to 8v), and it also has a larger display with graphical capabilities. The only advantage that the Triton has over the ICE is the ability to charge up to 24cells! If you get the Triton, I would reccommend that you still keep the ICE.

If you were to charge 24 cheap NiCd cells, the charger might have to put out 40v to peak the batteries (1.67v/cell) :eek: .

I don't have any nicd. I have nothing but nimhs. A pile of them at that. I will try the cheap 3000 I have. I like the ice. I may go to lipos. I have to have a charger to run my smaller cell packs.

I have the Triton, worth every penny. :)
