Bigmaxximum
Hey Mike, do you think that the BK controllers can handle the big maxximum. I am facing the delima of either upgrading my Bl setup or going with the JT hybrid chassis with a rody C5.

The big Maximum is a 4 pole motor. I am not sure how the controllers will react for sure. In theory, it cuts the total rpm capability in half (on any controller vs a 2 pole motor). I used to have a JT hybrid. I like the e-maxx a lot better! Either of the "L" Feigaos or Lehner xl motors will produce plenty of power though. The 4 pole motors are very smooth, but also very expensive. I am a dealer for Plettenberg as well, so let me know if you want the maximum and I will see about getting it for you.

Well I guess I will just have to upgrade my brushless motor. I was thinking of getting a buggy anyways. As far as the Big maxximum goes what controller do you think can handle it reliably? I seen quite a few peoples schulze controllers going up in smoke.

I am getting some new controllers in next week or so. I will give them a run. I guess I will have to order a few pletty motors to test them. I will also ask BK if they have tried these motors with their controllers.

I heard from a guy in Germany, that he was not able to run his bigmaxx on his BK 30/150 controller. It would simply not run powerfull enough.., nor rotate fast enough, or with terrible hiccups.. He tried to program his and play with the timing, but none of this worked..
The BK's top on a 4-pole is 50.000 rpm. With the bigmaxx on 16 cells, you allmost hit the 44000 rpm.. (i don't know if that 50K rpm is his material limit, his software limit or limited by his own frequency. I also read and that there is a new type of 9918, which runs on a higher frequency.. (the one you can buy now, will be the new type) I don’t know or heard about anyone running a esc, other then schulze, on his maximum/bigmaximum.. Personally I’m running my bigmaxximum on a schulze 18.97, and i smoked one 18.97... Now I’m running it with a mechanical brake, to spare the esc from the stress of the braking.. |
I know Plettenberg recommends the Schultze controllers, but that could be politics. Technically, the 4 pole motors ask twice as much of the speed controllers (hence the rpm limit is cut in half). The Schultze has a max rpm limit of 64000 on 4 pole motors if I remeber correctly. I will try the MGM controllers on the pletts also (see how well it works). These are some of the reasons I haven't stocked the Plettenberg motors. The motors themselves are very expensive and they need expensive controller to run them. Schultze also has a knack for not accepting a lot of responsibility for their controllers failure (I have blown a few for no apparent reason and had to pay for repair) This is kind of counter to my business startegy (competitive price with high value, backed by strong customer service). Never the less, I am curious, so I will try them. I know the Pletts are good motors, but a system could cost well into the $500+ range, which is twice what my average customer spends on a brushless setup.

I have read alot of horror stories with schulze and I personally dont want to deal with them. I have seen the Big Maxx perform and am curious to see what 1800 watts can do.
I also plan to build up a buggy here soon and am debating whether to do a e conversion or stick a rody c5 in it. |
I am sure lipomaxx ans serum may step in here with some experience, but the rated wattage of a motor is somewhat misleading. I know lipomaxx has a data recording system and has pulled upwards of 1000watts at near 100 amps from the little basic 2700 motor (rated for 700 wats and 35 amps). I am sure the big maximum is powerful, but the most likely factor to limit performance will be the batteries (ability to deliver the power), not the motor. I am sure a basic xl (rated for 1300 watts) or any of the Feigaos I carry could put out upwards of 2000 watts for short periods of time. Unless you plan on towing yourself around, you don't need this much power continuously.

HB Lightning Pro huh. I have been looking into those. Let us know when you get them in. I am definetely interested. Are you going to be making a Electric conversion for it?

I am almost done with my own electic conversion. Waiting for pinions and trying to figure out a clean way to mount the batteries and speed controller. I have considered making a chassis for the ultimately clean setup, but the prototype will use the stock chassis.

This thread moves fast... I gotta agree with Mike in that most people probably will never realize the full potential of the Big Maximum. I'm starting to think that 12 good sub c's can not put out more than 1000 watts for more than a few seconds. You'll need to run at least 24 cells to peak for a few seconds at 2000 watts. Isn't the big maximum rated at 1800 watts continuous? That means that motor could probably handle peaks of close to 4000 watts!!! So, with about 50 sub c cells, you'll get a setup where the power supply and motor are about equal power.
When you get a high power motor, just make sure you have the power supply and controller that will allow you to realize the full potential of that motor. |
The bigmaxximum , for sure is, one powefull motor. I can not give you any refference on other BL setups, i never saw one driving, besides the handfull on videos.

From candymans videos even with the lowered CG it still wheelies like no other. I am sure that it is one heck of a motor. Unusable power.

Ryan doesn't use a longer chassis, just the G-maxx.. . You can gear it higher.. I did, insane topspeed, i will post a vid of it, as soon as i have one.. |
Cool. I really want to see your vids. The thing that I didnt really like about Candymans vids is that I dont think he does any "real" full speed runs.
