basic 4200+8 cells +stadium truck=nice
Got a package from Mike this week (cheers fella!)which included a basic 4200 and some GP2200s and so far i love this little motor, running it on 8 gp2200s in my MF2,it looks really nice too, great quality,i didn't realise how tiny they were either.
Built 8 cell packs last night, ran this morning, tore the middle out of the diff gear within 2 or 3 mins(may have been slipping) Tried again at lunch time with good results: Running for 8 mins with 21/86 gearing: GPS says 39.2 MPH,18.97kw was clap cold (85F),motor was 130F,batts were a little warm(didn't measure) This was the the first charge of new cells and same charge as when i tore the diff gear so i'm happy with the run time. My thoughts are that this is a nice speed to gear to for this setup,i was wondering how high you think i might be able to gear to considering the esc is running so cool, maybe it's just understressed in this application? I'll try gearing up and down a couple of teeth to see which way the motor temp falls, waiting for bigger pinions so i'll report back later. |

Here you can see how 8 gp2200s fit great in place of 6 sub C cells in the stock battery location, just a few mm longer than a 6 cell pack. Here they're moved all the way forward but there's room for them to go forward or back so you don't lose the ability to tune the weight distribution.

Lookin good Gustav! Here is mine. Novak ss5800 6 cell epic 3000 dreadnought stick pack got me to third in 5min qualifying last race day. My pack dumped @9 min in the 10min A main DNF. Nice to run with the Nitro boys. Could have used a pitstop. Deans have been added since photo. Scorpion 2s2p@6400mah ought to take care of that soon. STock truck MOd truck are the two biggest classes at our track. 1/8 Buggies usually get a good turn out as usual.

And a glamour shot.

I love the setup Gustav!!!
I really do!! |
Very tidy layout. One of the neatest I've seen.
|
Thanks guys,
Serum,as you can see i took your advice and got the basic 4200,i'm glad i did so thank you. Actually it just ran 42.7 MPH on the same gearing,so i think the batts were begining to drop off the previous time (also it was their first cycle). This is within a fairly short distance too so i like the gearing like this,40ish is a nice useable speed i think for general everyday bashing,it's hard to stop a 2wd from much faster and everything runs nice and cool. |
Nice setup man, really tidy. Keep thinking of loading up on some of them GP2200's, in the same space of 9 GP3300 cells I could easily fit 12 GP2200's? Now that would give me the power I like :) Do you use standard batt bars with them? How many amps can they output?
Unfortunately Lehner Basic's don't really do it for me, can't push oversize tyres too well. Brilliant motors for everything else though :) You should be able to come up to about 50mph with that setup? |
a 9L on 12 cells would do great too if your car can take one.. :D
|
Could 12 GP2200 cells even out out the amps a 9L would require without overheating the cells?
Hey where'd you buy the GP2200's? Can Mike get them? |
Yeah, i thought Mike could get them. Those 2200's claim to be 100A proof, but with a light car and a 9L it's like driving a heavy maxx with 20-24 cells and a larger motor. The motor isn't too hard on the batteries, if you use the right gearing.
|
I got the cells from Mike. They're shorter but only slightly less diameter so battery bars should fit but you don't gain the space advantage in terms of length if you build side by side.
I'm using solderless power tubes though which is better than side by side for resistance and length of wire and therefore for interference and risk of voltage spike,i put that pack together in about 5 mins and it's the first one i've built. |
Nice. How much was it per cell from Mike?
|
$5.50 i think,here's some dimensions,quoted from another site, i didn't measure,seems about right though:
GP3700: length 43mm,diameter 23mm,weight 64.5 g. GP2200: length 34mm,diameter 23mm,weight 44 g. |
Thanks for the info :) I could for sure fit 12 of these in my T2 if I assembled them how you've done yours (shame I couldn't use a discharge tray with them). 12 cells with either a 12s or 8L would be nice..which motor do you guys think would work better? Its a 6lbs truck with oversize M2K tyres which drag my 6s/8 cells down quite a bit.
Sorry for hijacking your thread a bit Gustav :( |
Not a hijack at all, were talking gp2200 powered STs,albeit your set up is scaled up a bit.Any how i seem to recall hijacking your last thread somewhat.
|
Heh :) Can't go wrong with a bit of hijacking.
|
Did you say before you didn't get along with basic XLs?
I would have thought a basic xl 2800 or 3100 on 12 cells would be absurdly fast at that weight. |
I've dreamt of putting my Lehner 2800xl and 12 cells in my T2, but I've just been too lazy to take it out of the Ofna and try. The 48p gears would shred instantly, so it'd have to be 32p, and even that might have a hard time with that much power. It'd be fun to tape though......:D
|
Hey Dabid, get off your ass and do it :) I'd love to hear how that goes. Throw some oversize tyres on and tell me how it works - save me spending big $$$ to test myself :) Only joking mate.
I've only had a Lehner Basic 5300, non XL. Bad experience with that in my truck, felt very lacking in torque, like my 380 9s. Eventually sold it because my 540 6s was more powerful in my truck. |
I can see this being another thread becoming a T2 discussion, you know who got that nice T2 i was thinking of getting on flea-bay,one Mr Ryan Gerrish, builder of awesome custom crawlers.
I'd be tempted to throw a basic xl in there, but i wouldn't want to be responsible for what might happen. If you can get those harman karman(or whatever) parts it could be bullet proof. As for adapting a 32p spur and pads top your topshaft and plates that'd be easy since i have a lathe now.If it comes to it you could send me the parts and i bet i could make them work. |
32P gears designed for the RC10GT/Nitro DS are a direct fit. Typically 60-66t, I got them all on order :)
That sucks about the T2, but hey, I have one I can sell you :) I brought one off ebay for the fiber lyte shock towers, means I have a whole second complete T2 spare :) Let me know if your interested mate, they're bulletproof, espically with the spare set of RPM front and rear arms I happen to have, hehe. I think one would put up with a Basic XL very nicely, if you can keep it under control. How long are the XL's? |
They're 48mm long,have you got a video camera?!
|
Me? I have access to a rather poor quality one. Now if Dabid would put his XL in a T2 with 12 cells, then video it launching over some 5 story buildings, that would be fun :) But a bit unrealistic I think.
Hey a XL's the same length as a Feigao 540 S, give or take a mm. |
The springs on my T2 suck, I've never figured out the right spring/oil combo for that thing, and adding another 6 cell sure wouldn't help. Although, in the name of "science", I s'pose I could try it tomorrow or later this afternoon. :D
|
Good man :) For my T2, I use red springs at the back, and I think blue at the front, maybe golds. 45wt oil all around, no.2 pistons. Handles the weight of my 8 cell packs well, and with oversize tyres it rarely flips, but always lands jumps nice :)
Time for bed now I think, look forward to hearing your results if you go ahead with it. |
I might be able to do it tomorrow morning, but I've got work (until 1am), so I don't know. If I do the transplant, I'd also want to do a vid, but I don't think I want to drive with one hand and film with the other.......tripod vids suck too, but I think I'd have to go into work before any people that could film for me come home. I guess I could drop the 2800xl/9918 system in tomorrow, do a test run, and then try a vid Saturday morning.
|
Sounds good, take your time :) Work until 1AM? That sucks, I used to do night security, 6pm - 6am :( I'd offer to help film if I wasn't several hundred miles away with a big pond inbetween.
So what sort of gearing you think you'll run? |
Literally no Idea, but I just killed a solder connection on one of my matched GP3300 packs, so it might have to wait a little.....like 'til this afternoon. I just got my Ofna 9.5 running again with this system though, so I don't know if I feel like tearing it out and trying to put it in the T2, I'll do it after lunch. :D
|
hehe, keep us updated :) What do you mean killed a soldered connection? The connection broke? That sucks.
|
Crap, I can't do it. The handful of 32p gears I have won't fit in the small space of the T2's tranny. I was going to run a 66t spur and 15t pinon, but even that's humongous, and wouldn't work. I could try 48p, but I think it'd blow out instantly so screw that. If I can find another spur (preferably w/o buying one) I'll actually try driving this thing......that ought to be scary. :D
|
RC-Boyz sell some 60t RC10GT 32P spurs for $3 :)
With 48p you quite likely would rip the teeth off the spur gear after a few runs, and if you take it jumping it probably wouldn't last 5 mins. |
Good luck with that,i had to rebuild this tranny for the second time in 3 days,it's so easy to work on though. It was my own stupid fault again,i actually really like the GenII tranny,i think it will be reliable with this motor.I made a mistake setting the slipper and the whole tranny got to about 250F in about a minute, melted the plastic tranny spacer, replaced it with a bearing this time.
All is well though, ran it this afternoon with the right amount of slip on tarmac and the slipper stayed cool. The diff seems solid too, even without slip,as long as it's kept tight. The diff melted the other day only because i ran the same setting i did with the novak,it needs to be much tighter with this motor as the slipper is tighter.(1 1/2 turns out instead of 3). That could happen with any motor though,it's just a case of balancing the diff and slipper settings with the amount of power and traction,it's just the settings are more critical with more torque.I reckon i've got it sussed now though, touch wood:rolleyes: . |
That'd be Losi's for ya :P :P
To be fair my slipper got pretty toasty last week, had it set for my 380 9s but put my 540 6s in there for a run, I don't think it ever stopped slipping. |
How did i know you'd say that. lol.
Yeah,i'm gonna GPS it again tomorrow,i think that was still slipping a little all the way when it ran 42.7MPH.Just need to get used to the sounds,i wasn't used to the sound of the motor so i didn't realise how much it was still slipping. I think there could be a few more MPH in it over the same distance on that gearing. It's within about 40M i'd say, these speeds,i reckon it's cheating if you need an air strip to hit your top speed or if it's just speed run gearing and too hot for a whole run.It runs really cool at this gearing, after 8 mins 130F for the motor and the esc isn't even warm. |
Sounds good, be sure to post back what sort of speeds you can hit. Sounds like you can gear quite a bit higher than your at now if you wanted to.
So when your ready for a real car and not that brittle losi thing let me know and I'll sort you out with a T2 :P |
