Savage Tranny - Got his pants down... now what?? hehehe - Locking it up in 2nd

Cut and pasted from another place i posted at last night =)

Yo everybody =) For my BL conversion, I wanna lock this tranny up in 2nd gear (so i can use the BL motor for brakes and reverse) and take out everything i dont need...

OK - so i've opened up the tranny, and i think it's got a reverse module... i need to know what gear is what in here, and what i can take out and what has to stay...

I'll get some pics tomorrow, cause i dont really have time to write this even, but would like to get some sort of a start on things -lol-

I'm wondering - on the OUTER SPUR gear side of the tranny - which of the 2 gear INSIDE relates to 2nd gear, and which is first? Would the gear on the OUTER edge of the 'box (closest to the spur gear) be second, or is that first?

On the other side... there's 3 gears... 2x plastic and one metal... the metal gear is locked on the shaft with a pin, and spins/connects to another gear which i think is basically the reverse module?? (same side of the 'box - the other side to which the spur on the outside that connects to clutchbell gear is on)

damn - i'm stopping here - i cant explain this without confusing anyone -lol-

But basically need help from here to lock it up in second permanently - forward and reverse =) Will get pics tomorrow, and make this thread a lil more useful -lol-

cheers guys =)

GOT A PIC NOW! =)

Thoughts please on what i can take out and how to lock it up?? =)

bl-is-future 07.16.2008 08:05 PM

bigger gear is second gear. Use jb weld to weld the gear to the clutch. Remove all other gears and good to go. THe small solid peice is the part for the brakes (mechanical brakes) it is how the shaft that rotates actually pushes out on the pads to slow it down.

sweet! thanks heaps for the help man, nice to know i wont need to worry bout that lil metal piece for the brakes =)

Just before i go ahead - i did another pic of what i think wanna do... please let me know if i have things round the wrong way =)

Cheers again!

nope you got it wrong in there. Keep the smaller gear on the right side. Keep both metal gears and the larger plastic gear on the left side. The 2ng gear clutch is bolted the the shaft so you just need to JB weld the large plastic gear to the clutch

Locking trans in second gear.

I found this link on how to lock into second gear it may help.
I have not had a chance to try it yet but when I get it done I will post. Here is the link, go tot the bottom of the page for the diagram.

anyways... here is what i did...OH!! can someone please let me know how i locked the reverse module?!?! i'm stumped as to weather i locked it in forwards or reverse?? -lol- I figure i can swap 2 wires on the motor/esc and be fine anyway, but it would just be nice to know -lol-

Very nice, clean install.

Darion 07.25.2008 11:19 PM

danhfvcsd, thanks for taking the time to post up those pictures. I will be doing this mod in a few days so glad it worked out for you. Also, why lock the reverse module? I added a reverse module to my truck but plan on re-moving it all together and just using the esc to forward/reverse the motor. Just curious if you have another reason to lock the reverse module that I haven't considerd.

Thanks for the time,

Darion

danhfvcsd 07.26.2008 06:02 AM

no worries, i figure if i have the time, then why not =) I'm glad it's helped tho, i sure could have done with it! -lol-

I locked it up because i don't think i can remove it, as i'll lose my 'centre' output shafts/cups... Also, i figured i'll be using brakes and reverse via the motor/esc and thought i'd keep it simple and get rid of everything that wasn't necessary for the setup =)

I'm thinking of getting hold of a spare 3 speed in the future too tho, just to see how it goes compared to this - i will probably lock that up too =)

Darion 07.26.2008 09:06 PM

I added the reverse module about a year after I bought my SS so you should be able to do away wit it alltogether. I'll check out what I have tonight and get back to you, ya may be able to ditch the whole thing.

I'll post up tomorrow,

Darion

Darion 07.26.2008 09:19 PM

Check this out, install instructions for that reverse module,
http://www.hpiracing.com/instruction...uct-savrev.htm
Maybe just get it out of there. Oh ya, just move the pointer to the page yo want to see and you will get a full view of that step.

ahhh thanks mate - now i see what you meant -lol- I was wondering what i was gonna replace it with... i'm kinda slow like that -lol-

Here's another pic that will make more sense than me trying to put it in words -lol-
http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/b...smission29.jpg

So basically - all i need is the whole "Transmission Output Shaft Assembly" (my own name for it -lol- just the parts with the BLUE arrows) i think... and this replaces the reverse module, correct? =)

Looks to me like what you will need are the shaft, 86081, and part number 85044. You should already have the bearing and the gear in the trans, not in the reverse module, as it is. look at this page,
http://www.hpiracing.com/graphics/in...87032-1_p3.jpg
I don't believe either of the parts you would need are in the reverse module.

Talk to ya later,

Darion

Nice one... i'll order that stuff after i get back from holidays.... but ya know what? after all this - i've just bought a 2nd hand 3spd -lmao- But i will more than likely keep it this way anyway =) it was cheap and i got a couple other lil bits too, so i figured while i was there - why not buy it? -lol-

I must really thank everyone for their input, as without it, i wouldn't have got this done, so thanks guys! =)

No problem at all, for me I'm leaning as I go so these are things I need to know also. :yipi:

Have a great holiday,

Darion
