New Slayer wannabe project...

Now that I've had time to play with the Slash a bit, I find I really like the way it looks. I toyed with the idea of converting it to 4WD but will be more trouble that it's worth. The Slayer is just a version of a Revo, and I've been there, done that.

So, I am going to pick up a buggy and do the necessary modifications to use a Slash body since it fits very nicely on a buggy platform.

My plans:
  • ESC: Gonna use my modded MMM (no fan and disabled BEC).

  • Lipos: 6s @ 4-5Ah.

  • Radio: Spektrum of course!

  • Motor: Neu 1512 2.5d, 1.5y, or 3d for a suitable rpm at 6s voltage. Looking for something around 1800kv. I think the 1512 will be plenty of motor for this application.

  • Buggy: Gonna start looking for a roller. I'm leaning to Ofna simply because my LHS has parts, and even if they don't have what I need, pretty much anyplace has them.

  • Speed/Gearing: Shooting for 35-40mph max. So, at 6s on a 1800kv motor, I'll be using 46/12 to 46/14. I want to keep it driveable. I want to get rid of the center diff and use a spool or one of those single speed spurs from an Ultra GTP or something like that. Another reason to go with an Ofna buggy I guess...

  • Tires: Dunno about this. I really like the narrow scale look. Buggy tires are narrow, but not exactly scale looking. Since pretty much all buggies use 17mm hubs, I can't use Traxxas Slayer wheels. Any ideas on this one?

  • Suspension: First thing I wanna do is set the arms/suspension for max travel, which means putting the shocks on the outermost mount holes on the shocktower, and innermost mount holes on the arms. Then, get stiffer springs to compensate for the different suspension travel geometry.

  • Body: Like I said, I'm planning to use the Slash body. Being a Traxxas product, replacements will be available everywhere when it gets wrecked (notice I didn't say "if"). Of course, this will require fabbed mounts, but that's no biggie.

  • Bumpers: I'll probably figure out a way to fit the Slash or Slayer bumpers on it. Gotta complete the look after all!

The first thing I need is a buggy. Like I said, I'm leaning towards an Ofna platform. Any current Hyper will do, or anything that is solid and dependable. Anyone have a roller in good condition they are willing to part with for a good price? If not, I'll hit up eBay.

magman 07.19.2008 03:04 PM

I was down at my LHS today looking into putting a Slash body on a buggy...The body was too big unless you can figure some REALLY good bumper mounts, which is always doable. For my mbx-5, I would need to be v/creative to mount the bumpers to protect the body. I am still considering the Slash body though...Good luck on your project. I will be v/interested on how it turns out...:mdr:

BrianG 07.19.2008 03:09 PM

I test-fitted my Slash body on my Hyper8 and it seems to match very well. The tires stick out ever so slightly, and the buggy wheelbase seems to be a better match for that body than the Slash itself!

magman 07.19.2008 03:14 PM

I agree w/you about the wheel base being better suited for the body. Your Hyper 8 may be a little different than my mugen, hence it probably is a better fit. Just curious, how were you thinking of mounting bumpers to your buggy?

BrianG 07.19.2008 03:36 PM

I have no idea yet. I'll know more when I decide on a buggy and get some extra bumpers to play with.

skellyo 07.19.2008 04:24 PM

I can make you a good deal on a MBX5 roller with RCM motor mount and brand new chassis. :mdr:

BrianG 07.19.2008 04:30 PM

Check your PM.

I was also looking at a Pro- line t-maxx front and rear bumper for mock up purposes. If the front bumper could be mounted just behind the front of the body, would that give the body enough support? Same idea in the rear. If this can be done...I know it can, it will be much easier that trying to squeeze a body on a buggy after a Bl conversion. It could also allow people to run even bigger batteries.

entjoles 07.19.2008 05:03 PM

looks great!

:rules::rofl:

i cant believe my eyes..........dirty wheels in your pics.........so you really do drive your cars!

DRIFT_BUGGY 07.19.2008 06:13 PM

Far out, that body is made for that chassis. Didn't think the body was that big

magman 07.19.2008 07:35 PM

Has anyone looked at a 200mm touring car body to see if it would fit?

lol, yeah, I do drive them - if you call cartwheeling and spending more time on the lid than on the wheels "driving".

DRIFT: Yeah, it does seem to be a perfect fit. I too was surprised at how large the Slash body was - it's actually not that much smaller than the Porsche Ultra GTP 1/8 scale body I have.

they are about the same size as a 1/10 monster truck body

I used a xtm mammoth bumper on my landmax. Its not perfect but it was easy to put on. I planned to add a brace to it but i never got around to it. The old landmax bodies are like gold so you don't want to wreck one.

Like the original pan head hardware and the short arms ?

BrianG 07.19.2008 10:19 PM

What tires are those? And do they use 17mm hexes like buggies do?

those are the origanal tires and wheels. They use a 19mm hex like some old buggies did.

cemetery gates 07.19.2008 10:30 PM

Hey Brian, you could use this wheel/tire setup. I think it would look somewhat scale.

Are those wheels standard buggy size?

I think they are close enough to these in diameter to work.

lincpimp 07.20.2008 03:06 AM

If you wanted to use slayer wheels and tires, a set of savage or lsp axles should do the trick. Then you can use the hpi 14mm netal hexes, and I am sure that the slayer will use 14mm hexes...unless traxxas goes with the new 17mm stepped hex they put on the revo platinum. I figure that they will stick with 14mm hexes.

The savage axles fit if you are using dogbones on the buggy. You may be able to swap out the cv style axle ends if you are using cv axles on the buggy.

Ofna hyper buggies are nice, but the ofna gtp solid center spool will not fit the hyper bulks, bearing sizes are different... Not sure if there is a solid center option for the hyper buggies.

mriccucci 07.20.2008 08:18 AM

As far as bumpers go the HPI Savage uses a similar bumper to the one that Desmo posted. Link to the bumper here

Brian, found this for you on the TRX forums and thought you would like it. Nice little corr conversion along your lines.

Edit: didn't see brushless boys post. Oh well I will leave this link anyway.

BrianG 07.21.2008 10:53 AM

lol, I was just looking at that.

I just picked up a Mugen MBX5 roller from Skellyo as the base for this project. Hopefully the mailman will show up by Friday so I can "prettify" it over the weekend.

Cool, but the video looks like its been sped up

suicideneil 07.24.2008 10:29 PM

These any use?:

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Ofna-T-Maxx-...QQcmdZViewItem

Allow you to mount 14mm hex rims onto a buggy/truggy with 1/8 scale hubs.

BrianG 07.25.2008 12:32 AM

Thanks for the link! Wow, those add a heck of an offset. I'll see how the regular buggy tires look first. My MBX5 has a tentative delivery date of 7/28 (monday) so I'm getting anxious to start!

I got a Futaba servo - can't remember the exact model, but it has close to 200oz-in torque and .15 sec speed @ 6v. Also got another Spektrum receiver (man, the DX3r was a good investment!), and a Slash body.

In the meantime, I'm trying to finish up the Ofna UltraGTP project I started a while back. I hate working on too many projects at once. Started making the battery trays and came up with a design that allows different size lipos, but that's a subject for the other thread.

Still need to pick up a Neu motor and a 6s battery pack and I think the F-Slayer (faux slayer) will be done. May need some nuts/bolts and some new CVD to make the MBX look shiny and new but that can wait.

skellyo 07.29.2008 12:05 PM

Got e-mail on my blackberry that the package was delivered to your work. So, in case you didn't know it's there...you do now.

BrianG 07.29.2008 12:17 PM

Yup, I got it! Just took a brief look at stuff and everthing looks nice. May need to replace a couple nuts/bolts and shine things up a bit, but definitely worth the price!

I'm glad I got the Ultra GTP project done last weekend because I can just imagine this project is gonna need my whole work bench.

brushlessboy16 07.29.2008 12:27 PM

isnt it you brian who always posts the "this thread is nothin' without Pitchers" thing :D

you see where im goin with this :rotf:

BrianG 07.29.2008 12:30 PM

Sheesh! Give a guy a chance to get home! I'm at work right now.

brushlessboy16 07.29.2008 12:46 PM

well apparently u got time cuz ur on the forums at work :P

haha

BrianG 07.29.2008 02:05 PM

Just here and there. And I don't have my camera with me.

glassdoctor 07.29.2008 07:06 PM

Come on BG, it's almost 6:00... time for pic posting. :)

I have been testing fitting my Slash body on stuff too, LOL!!!! It looks SWEET on a Revo.

There is interest from a few mfg to make these. We should see a couple new aftermarket versions of the Slash body pretty soon. I think it's pretty sweet.
