MMM V2 Beta Test
I would like to thank Patrick and the Castle crew for all their hard work!
It is wonderful someone has finally produced a GREAT 1/8 scale speed controller. I was one of the luck ones that got to test the Beta Monster version 2. I just received it last Saturday. I had it on the car and running in just a few minutes. I down loaded all the setting off of my old Monster and applied them to the new Monster V2. The first thing you will notice is the Monster V2 comes with the female bullets on the ESC. Which I thought I would really like, but it has turned out to be my only complaint. The 6.5mm bullets look really neat, but it just adds another connection and the wires extend up about a 1/4” above the ESC. The body on my car did not fit until I bent the wires really hard. It requires more room. I think soldering directly the bullets on the board is the real answer. The second thing that scared me is the fan only ran until the ESC initialization was over then it shut off. I first thought it was broke. I decided to run it anyway and after running it, I noticed the fan was running when I took off the car body. This was a brilliant idea to control the fan by the temp. of the ESC. This will make the fans last a lot longer. With my 6s setup the fan hardly ever runs. Good job Castle! I thought since I transferred my setting the car would run exactly the same, but there must be some changes in the ESC controls because my car seemed to have a little more braking power with the same setting. I just lowered it a little more and it acted about the same. I ran the car all day Sunday and never had any problems. With over 2 hours of really hard track time, I’m convinced all the problems are solved! Next weekend I have a race and give an update on the Monsters’ performance. I have been running 1/10 scale electric cars for a long time and I never thought anyone would get a sensorless 1/8 scale ESC to have the same sensitive high resolution control, but Castle Creations has done it!!! It is truly awesome!:yipi: Thank you, Earl |
Very cool...the update we needed.
|
I'm jealous. :diablo:
|
I'm glad everything seems to be good so far. I like that the fan runs during the the ESCs initialization process because it will be easy to tell if the fan's still working. Did you happen to check if the bec voltage was still set at 5.5 volts like the v1 becs?
|
Thats great to hear that it is working so well. Only makes me more excited to get mine...
|
They need to send me one so I can try it in my BPP truggy with the 1521/1Y. I will also wait a bit to get the V2.
|
Sweet, thanks for posting
|
Sounds like things are looking up! Thanks for your report!
|
I can't wait for the e-mail that says my controller is in the mail. I'm sure if this I had a working MMM I wouldn't have 3 new cars now.
|
I think I remember Patrick saying that you can send the MMM back and get the wires soldered directly to the board.
|
With the 6.5mm sockets, there's no need to send it back to them inorder to solder it to the board. I'd just do what Sparky said: solder it directly to the sockets. And besides, those connectors will act like an extra heatsink since they'll suck a bit of heat from the board and dissipate it with air flow. I won't be using heat shrink on them for that purpose. Heatsinking will be very limited though and the whole thing is simply one big heatsink in it's own right. :)
I'll be ordering one as soon as it is available....God's willing! :) |
i think i`m going to order to combos now !! 2200kv for the LST2 and 2650KV for the revo , GOOD JOB CC :)
|
You can also solder the wires into the male plugs at 90 degrees to the plug if you take the dremel to the side of the plug.
|
Good to hear. It almost makes me wish my V1 would go belly up :)
|
Hi Sparky,
Thank u for the review. I'm patiently waiting for 2 to ship. 1 of them from Mike. When i get it, I will give them their share of torture in hot & humid conditions with ambient temperature in excess of 32 deg C at near 100% humidity. If they survive, then I think we have a winner on our hands. Having said that, my dead V1 did survive an hour long torture but died silently in the next run no doubt due to the famous gremlin. Regards, Joe Ling |
Nice review, thank you sparky, I am very much looking forward to getting mine back.
|
Did patrick say they would let us trade a V1 in on a V2 at no charge?

Does anyone know if they changed the fan plug on the bottom of the board on the V2?
|
Any update?
I wonder if they made a production run this week? |
mmm recomendation
hi mate im converting my lst2 and i have a bl revo are these the combos you would recomend for these trucks ive cooked two esc (m tronics and a quark monster pro ) in my revo so far and getting a bit fed up with it i run it on the strobe slipper ofna spur and a 16 tooth pinion with 2x 7.4 5000mah 25c lipos at 14.8 on a single speed emax gearbox 40 series wheels with max mulcher tyres my motor is a nue 1515 but im goint to try for a purpose built combo any help woulb be great as i cant aford to keep cooking speed controllers
sorry if this is in the wrong thread guys Quote:

Your 1515 should do wonderful with the Monster Max ESC. I would not bother with a combo since you already have the 1515. The castle 2200 is just an inexpensively built Neu. If you need another motor for something else, then the combo might be a good idea.

nue 1515
the only reason i was going for the combo is cos i need a complete set for the lst just want to get the right motor for it
and i use the nue in the revo and i have spoke to a few people say the reason why i may have cooked my esc's is becouse of the motor please forgive my lack of knowledge on bl set ups still trying to understand it all |
Which neu do you have exactly (kv rating or wind)?

 |
type of motor
hi mate i have the 1515/1.5d kv 2700

How long it takes that MMM V2 will be in the stock ? If its not taking a long time, I would buy MMM.

The 1.5d should be a great motor for the LST2. I'm considering that one for my LST too. Generally, lower kv motor's and higher pinion tooth counts lead to happier, cooler running components. The problem on the LST is that you have to be maxed out on your gearing options(FOC w/swap mod, 59t TiNi spur and 25t pinion) to achieve race pace capability(not quite 37m.p.h.). I haven't looked at the 1.5d on Brian's Speed Calculator yet but it should should enable you to either run without the swap mod, keep the 63t stock spur, or run a smaller pinion and still maintain an adequate pace to be competitive at the track. I'm gonna start with the 2200 because I'm not financially able to fork out for the motor yet and it will be less expensive to get the combo once they are available as well as I'll need another V2 MMM anyway. |
.... So one real test and no followup?
We are about to go back into Wild Speculation Mode... Updates please! |
Monster V2 Beta update!
Monster V2 Beta update!
Last weekend I ran in the HARC series sportsman class. My RC8 was running awesome! I got there 9:00am and did a few practice runs. The ESC and the suspension were both working great. The race had 3 qualifiers then the mains. There were about 30 people in the sportsman class with three or four heats. I won all three of qualifiers and also had the top qualifying time. I was very happy with both my car and the way it drove. Many people stopped by to check out the electric buggy that was proving to be a real contender. It was hard to work on my car between the races for all the questions people were asking. I was really excited for the main, but it didn’t turn out like I had hoped. I started in first place since I had TQ’d. On the first lap my car felt funny jumping the double double. Then a few laps later my car stopped. Dam! I took it back to the pits to look it over. The motor had slipped away for the diff gear. O well, that is the way racing goes. You never know what is going to happen. However, it was still a very successful day to see an electric RC8 dominate during the qualifiers. I can’t wait for the next race!
