How do i remove dogbone pins?
 

Does anyone know how to remove the pins in the ends of dogbones?

I have all the tools you can imagine even an 11 ton press but i cant figure out how to go about it

when i rebuilt my lst2 cvd's . i had to use a bearing press . I had a steel plate with a hole just bigger than the pin drilled in it . then i pushed it as far as it would go . then i had a friend take needle nose pliers to hold the other pin . Then i pressed it in untill the other pin fell out . then i centered the new pin .

Man this is simple - all it takes is a vise and a small socket from a socket set. Put the socket over the pin on one side and then put this in the vise - you're going to use the vise to push the pin out into the socket on the other side.

Takes longer to explain that it does to do it - just make sure everything stays square so youdon't enlarge the hole so it will still be tight when you reverse the process and push a new pin in. Just happen to have pic -

It takes a little care to get new pin lined up and started squarely, but its not that hard. When you own UE SM you learn stuff like this so you can keep running, lol!!

the only thing about that is how do you get the pin all the way out duster?

Once you've got it flush, back the vise up, use anything thats smaller in diameter - nail or a pc of drill bit (shank) and push it the rest of the way out.

UE's use a 3mm pin for center drives and cvds, I bought a 2mm drill bit, cut shank off ~10mm or so and use that. I had 16 pins to replace, if it had been just a few, I would have used a pc of nail.

The above is the hard way - take the end thats stricking out and clamp it in the vise. Takes a few taps with small hammer on side of the dogbone to move it the rest of the way. My experience with these is once pin has moved, it's a lot easier to move it. It might take a bit to make it move that 1st bit (some even make a pop), but past that its all downhill from there.

You can also heat the cvd up a little to make it eaiser .

Where do you buy just the pins? I have a CRT I would like to replace the pins on the center shafts.

i pulled them off spare dogbones i had lying around :D

why is it necessary to replace just the pins. i would think the pins would tear out of the steal before they break.

nope mine wore down into a "D" shape one side really flat

Ok well i got one pressed in perfect, the second one, i was pressing the pin in and it decided to go shootin... no i have a hole in the drywall :D.. looking got more spare dogbones..

I use a bike chain pin remover with a 3.0mm shaft. Just enough to fit all the way threw the cvd shaft. The shaft when you get it is around 3.5mm. All you have to do is lathe it down to 3.0.

yah i wish.. tried that didnt work, the pin is stuck.. tried heating it.. 12 tons of force repetedly..

Dont try using the bike chain pin remover with a 3.5mm shaft. It'll either get stuck or you'll crack the end of the cvd.

i tried it with a tiny 15 size chain breaker.. like 2mm... still didnt budge..


would anyone want to donate a 97mm dogbone to me :D
