Trading advice

For guys that have traded intertstate or to other countries how have you gone about it without being shafted .

Is there a way to trade using Paypal ?

Do you both send the items together or one waits for the item to arrive and then sends there item off .

Being in Australia i am getting a few trade offers from the US for my RC8 + conversion that's for sale .

TDC57 08.01.2008 02:51 AM

If your trading with a family member here your pretty dam safe.. Other than that it's a crap shoot..

My two cents..

ffactory666 08.01.2008 02:58 AM

Ye , being on the other side of the world is a bit scary for trades.

I agree with what Shawn had to say and untill recently I was nervous about making deals with people I dont know whether they were trades or buy/sell agreements...but I am ok about buying from online stores...its the risk you take.....

JERRY2KONE 08.01.2008 03:17 AM

Agree

I have to say that I agree with Shaun on this one. For the most part if you have been on RCM for a while you know who has been around long enough to make a judgement call. I have had no problems dealing with RCM brothers, and outside of here I have requested phone confirmations to kind of size up who it is that I am dealing with. Usually no one will ship until they receive payment for the item. In the case of a trade I would base that on conversation with the other party, and there should be no reason that both cannot ship at the same time. Good luck with that man.

Just a clarification...
Are you talking about RCM members or relatives?

I think he is talking about "your brother from a different mother" (RCM members)

ffactory666 08.01.2008 03:35 AM

Ok , think i have come up with a safer way to do this .

Using Paypal we can both send a payment to each other for what both vehicles are worth ( say $600 ) with the goods described in the Payment . That way if i don't receive the trade i can open a dispute with paypal and get my money back at least .
What do you guys think of this option.

trev3813 08.01.2008 03:37 AM

yeah, certain people i'd trade to like nothing, i.e like lincpimp, Tdc57,azjc, suicide neil, and alot more

Sorry guys, yes I was referring to my second family.. YOU all at RCM.. Can you feel the love..:lol:

bl-is-future 08.01.2008 08:52 AM

But then what if he files too and then he gets his money back and the rc8 and if he didnt ship his trade his trade too. Then you are out your rc8 still. If you feel the least bit shady about the person dont do it. And as far as paypals shipping confirmation when a dispute is under way, is total crap, all they have to do is ship a empty box to get a tracking number and paypal is happy. it could go on forever. Like i said don't do it if you feel shady on the person. Like everyone else said if it is someone on RCM you you should be fine.

I have bought and sold several things on this forum over the years and never had any problems. As far as trading goes i think it's a total gamble whether it's this forum or another.

wallot 08.01.2008 10:36 AM

trading is always a gamble no matter if it's an individual or an eshop if it's abroad. I had more paypal disputes with stores than individuals. and buying used stuff from individuals is even more risky.

Yeah, that's a long way to come from for an asskicking....

Before I got into RC I did a good deal of computer parts trading. It was a big site w/ tons of traders and opportunity for scammers. Basically the rules there were that one member actually started his own feedback website and that became the std. Ebay refs are BS mostly.

Seq of trading depended on # of + reviews. Two newbies or two longtime traders X-shipped or just paid and shipped. New traders that had less than X many (say 20) + reviews had to ship first to established traders to avoid fake sellers. This was the crux of the system. Anyone w/ a - feedback was doomed to ship first for a while to restore rep. You always shipped using a trackable option, USPS Priority, Fedex or UPS and sent the track # to the person quickly to show the item as shipped.

It pretty much eliminates scammers selling vaporware. You had to build a rep first to be trusted. New members to the site were held skeptically. If you just signed up, quickly sold 20 paperclips, it didn't really count (reviews indicate what was sold,) and no one would then send you $$$ for a laptop or whatever. Things did invariably happen, the the risk was fairly low.

That said, people here are generally trustworthy as the crowd is small and tight knit. If the community were much bigger and problems started popping up I would begin to worry.

jhautz 08.01.2008 11:40 AM

I personally cant get my brain around the trade thing over the internet. I ship my stuff to some guy who advertizes a trade and then when he gets it he ships his stuff to me. Way to much opportunity for scam IMO. Even if he does ship it, what if the item isnt as described you have no recourse at all. You traded taded you nice stuff for his crap.

As for Paypal disputes as a possible solution... Thats crap too. I filed a complaint for an item that was never shipped. I never got a confirmation or any response at all after the payment was sent. (this was all for an ebay item by the way) After a few weeks of no response I filed a dispute with Paypal. It went on for weeks with them requesting info on this and that. Finally the guy sent paypal a tracking number, but it was a bogus tracking number to an address that wasnt mine. Well... paypal didnt even bother, the just said that I loose the dispute based on any old tracking number being provided. Then I had to open another dispute and when all was said and done I won the dispute after about 2 months of screwing around I was refunded a whoping $0.81 out of the $125. Apparently the guy just emptied his paypal account and paypal wouldnt go any farther trying to get my money back.

In the end I called the Credit Card company for the Credit Card I used and refused the charges. They were most helpfull and just said they saw it all the time and stopped the payment to paypal and that was it. I had my money back.

After all of that Paypal then contacted me and whatned t know why I refused the charges for that trasaction and was looking for an explanation. I just forwarded the worlds longest email chain back to them with all of the communication of the entire dispute and that was it I never heard from them again.

Bottom line... Paypal offers no protection IMO. NONE at all.

I always use payment thru Paypal and use my credit card on the paypal payment so I have that last line of defense against a scammer. Your credit card company is your best friend. I also think that when you go to select credit card as the payment method for a paypal transaction they even bring up a whole screen try to talk you out of doing that and a bunch of stupid reasons why using a CC is bad. They dont want you to use a CC so they dont have to worry about getting payments refused when their system fails.

Finnster 08.01.2008 12:26 PM

^^^

That's all true about paypal, they are generally only slightly less useless than any other way.

I always select CC also when using paypal at internet shops (tho not to traders.) Paypal has to pick up the CC fees when you use the option, so that is another big reason they try to talk you out of it. Any chance I get to be a PITA of paypal I take it.

The only bad thing about using CC to pay individual sellers is the seller has to accept some fees, and you need the upgraded acct and not everyone wants that. Generally if I trade over the internet I only want non-CC paypal unless you want to pick up fees.

That being said, I've done trades over the internet for used stuff for 10 years now and have never had a bad deal. => Good luck and being careful who and how I trade.

lol, I've only bought 2 motors brand new, an old 380C/6L and my recent Tekno 2.5D. Everything else I've found good deals on and they've worked out great.

JThiessen 08.01.2008 12:27 PM

RC Universe has (or maybe "had") an insurance system for this type of activity. You may want to take a look at their site and see if its still active. If I remember correctly, you will both have to place an ad on their site, then you can have the option of opting for insurance.

JERRY2KONE 08.01.2008 03:46 PM

Shady

IMO if you want this item bad enough, why not just purchase it brand new from an LHS & forget the risk? At least that way you know who you are dealing with, and you have some recourse of action if anything is out of wack. Besides the risk is much lower for sure. It just seems to me if there is any chance of losing money, you might as well just pay retail for the item. Just my opinion.

BlackedOutREVO 08.01.2008 04:42 PM

For trades I say they shit FIRST, or they can forget it

That has worked for me. I wont do it any other way, unless it was here as said

ffactory666 08.01.2008 05:11 PM

All great advice guys , thanks muchly .

I do all my Paypal transactions with a CC and to this day nearly 200 all have been positive ( first time for a bad one though ) .
Still wouldn't want to go through the hassle with the CC company .

Like mentioned earlier they could always ship an empty box just to get a tracking number too .

Basically i'm the one with the great feedback ( ebay and other forums ) so either the other guys will have to send me there trade first and upon receipt i will send the buggy .
Unless they are well trusted members with great feedback which i could trust .

Thanks heaps for the advice

rootar 08.01.2008 06:03 PM

Ive bought from about 10 people on this site and sold to more than a handful also, i have also done a couple of trades on here also.

all were well know reputible members and in the trades i had no problem shipping first and shipping at the same time, i would atleast contact them via phone once before a trade, its nice to know the voice on the other end of the typing.

ffactory666 08.01.2008 06:12 PM

Yep , the trader has just given me his phone details so at least i can speak to him but i still will want him to send the buggy first

jayjay283 08.01.2008 07:36 PM

I just make sure the deal is cool, I insist on talking to the person. and if they put up the ad and its a trade they ship 1st or I pay with paypal. If I feel funny or he wants me to ship 1st I walk away... I almost got burned for 2 vxl trucks for a revo about 3 weeks ago. Had the guys phone # (throw away cell) but everything else was fake, he wanted me to ship 1st. I blew off the deal and saw another guy got burned taking the deal for $500 LOL I told the burned guy the info I had on the seller and he eventually got it sorted out. Just walk away if you dont like it. Always another deal right behind it

ffactory666 08.01.2008 10:53 PM

All cool guys , the guy is shipping the buggy first ( xray 808 :mdr:) on Monday . When i receive it i will then send him the RC8 .

Thanks again

Hmmm..WOW... now that's a strange request. Personally I'd rather they take care of that business AFTER they ship the package out. You never know how well they are going to wash their hands.
