1st Brushless Conversion

Hi,
New to the forum but not new to rc. I am working on my 1st brushless conversion - went with the Jammin CRT.5
I have the RC-Monster electric motor mount on order (should be here tomorrow) but I am having a hard time trying to figure out what brushless setup to use.
Our track is pretty big but but its technical so blazing speed will not be required. I was thinking about running something with low kv like a Traxxas Velineon. Do you guys think the Velineon has enough power for the CRT.5?

Here is a quick pick after I stripped everything out of the RTR CRT.5

what voltage do you plan on running?

nitro_joe 08.07.2008 11:09 PM

I was planning on running 11.1v packs.

Steve Krug 08.07.2008 11:12 PM

It'll run hot but it'll work.

Steve, Do you think it will run hot because of the 11.1v packs? Should I use 7.4v packs instead?

jnev 08.08.2008 12:40 AM

With 3s, I don't think you can beat a Mamba Max ESC with external BEC and a Feigao 9L motor. This will give you speeds in the mid thirties depending how you gear it, and should run well for you. If you have the money though, go try to go with a Medusa or Neu motor. Neu motors are the best motors around, but the price also reflects this... The Medusa motors are kind of in between the Feigao and Neu in terms of performance and price.

ffactory666 08.08.2008 03:50 AM

Nice little truck

Can't go wrong with the Medusa especially for the price and i havn't heard one bad thing about them.

nitro_joe 08.08.2008 08:09 AM

The only reason why I was going to try the Traxxas brushless setup is because the LHS I work at has a few in stock. The Mamba Max ESC is on backorder thru our distributors until late August. I want to get this truck on the track ASAP.

What Medusa motor do you guys recommend?

Steve Krug 08.08.2008 01:03 PM

The medusa 50mm versions will work best for your setup.

The velineon on 7.4V will run cooler most likely, but you just won't have nearly the power that a 9L could give you on 3S.

If you want to spend an extra 40-50 bucks or so on a medusa, it is well worth it.

nitro_joe 08.18.2008 10:42 PM

I went with the Velineon system. All that is left is mount up the battery box and install the Rx.
Can't wait to see what this truck can do on 3S !!

Looks nice but can you get a body on that thing? :mdr:

LOL - The body fits perfectly. It must have been the angle I took the picture from that makes the ESC look like a skyscraper

SWAMPER 08.19.2008 12:21 PM

Joe the truggy looks great, is that the stock chassis

nitro_joe 08.19.2008 12:48 PM

Thanks! It is the stock chassis that comes with the RTR. It is extended to fit full sized servos. I made a battery tray and took it for its 1st run today. The VXL is an animal on 3S!!!!
Very happy with this choice. A 1/8th scale conversion is next on my list.

SWAMPER 08.19.2008 12:55 PM

doing my BEC CRT to brushless ordered the kit from Aldo think UPS lost it  still not here, thinking of getting the CC mamba monster esc combo, comes with a BL motor and go with a 5S lipo

nitro_joe 08.19.2008 01:49 PM

Do you have a tracking number for the kit?

Mamba Monster looks hot. We have the new Novak HV in stock at the store.

Swamper + 5s = The MAN !!

SWAMPER 08.19.2008 01:56 PM

no tracking number, Aldo looked it up last week and said the UPS F'd up and it should be here Monday but never showed up hope it's here today if not I'll let him know and see if he can kick some UPS butt :whip::whip:

jayjay283 08.19.2008 04:50 PM

Nice crt Sir, by any chance do you know the weight of it, pre-vxl system or après ?

nitro_joe 08.19.2008 09:33 PM

I don't have a scale to weigh it. Sorry.

I am glad I took your advice RCShocker! I took the Jammin to our track yesterday and it performed superbly! Cleared the huge doubles with ease. I have 4 3S packs. I'm not even going to bother getting any 2S packs. The motor never got above 115* and the ESC never got above 120* after a full pack.
I have to move the ESC location. I put it right above the center diff with double-sided tape but it only held up for 3 packs. Do you guys have any suggestions on where to mount the ESC?

A 1/8th scale conversion will def be next.

awesome rig but may I suggest lowering the esc.....that esc is famouse for the female plugs coming loose and it dont take much jaring to do it even with the body on....if it sudenly stops working check the female plugs in the esc ..one probably will come loose...its under warranty but a pita to get fixed...........with that said nice choice on the vxl to power your conversion

Check his rig again, thats the new vxl with the wires direct soldered. Traxxas listened after 4 years and fixed it lol

hmmm nice...about time

E-Revonut 08.20.2008 06:23 PM

I made a plate that attaches on top of the center diff to hold my esc and rx. The location isn't the problem, it's the double sided tape! make a plate out of aluminum and transfer the mounting holes for the top of diff onto it and drill them out, then put the screws through everything. I used velcro and a zip tie for my mm esc and just velcro on the rx. 20+ runs and no problems!

nitro_joe 08.24.2008 04:40 PM

My current setup with the stock chassis just wasn't working out. Picked up the RC-Monster brushless conversion chassis kit - the best mod you can do to the CRT.5 in my opinion.

The Orion Carbon 11.1v 3200 was pretty much made for this battery tray. No more ghetto setup for me.

It came with the chassis. Worth every penny.

your hot joe ahh I mean thats hot joe.

nitro_joe 08.24.2008 09:16 PM

LOL - I am in my workshop thinking of what I can sell to fund a 1/8th scale conversion. The Hyper 8 in the store is calling me :intello:

CritterRacing 08.24.2008 09:21 PM

bring it on B. Sell the crawler.

nitro_joe 09.20.2008 11:14 AM

The brushless CRT.5 is probably my favorite car to run at our track. Here are some pics from last weekend.
