best bashing tires for savage
Hi guys, does anyone have a favorite bash wheel and tire for the savage? I'm almost finished with my flm coversion and I'm ready for rubber.
|
how tall do you want the tires? i can recommend some that arent so tall such as proline mashers, and badlands, or losi zombie maxx.
|
ill second the zombie maxx, i use them on offset rpm rims and love them, they hook up great on everything, they arent huge tires though
|
The zombie maxs balloon pretty badly don't they?
I like the really big cen wheels. With the Savage XL axle extenders (requires the XL dog bones and diff out drives as well) and hex adapters I think it could be a pretty good setup. |
i run proline 40 series velocity rims and bowtie tires. Great tire all around and really light and dont balloon to bad at all.
|
i have a ring of duct tape on the inside of my zombies along with trinity three stage foams and ballooning is minimal...at full speed they balloon some but not too bad
|
What about stock savage xl wheels and tires?
|
if you secure the esc good you will not have any problems. I have flown my savage at least 12 feet high if not higher and i am still on the v1. Now the v1 im sure is just luck but the case holding up is because i secure it well. My fan is also perfectly fine.
edit - k have no idea how this got in this thread.... it was intended for another :neutral: |
+1 on the Zombiemaxx tires. Great for all around on all surfaces and they last forever.
|
The zombies are killer I used to have a set but sold them along with my gmaxx they were just as you said.
|
badlands :D, grip great on everything
|
my zombies barely balloon at all on full speed. i have one layer of gorilla tape on the inside and using the ofna yellow molded foams.
|
hi
imo zombies are quite good for real offraod. badlands are nice also. they just look a little small. tires that have good grip in offroad conditions need to be soft and therefore they baloon at high speeds. thats a trade off. 40 series proline are not really usable in real offroad conditions. they are nice on a track or flat grassfields, parks etc. i would also not tape your tires. in the medium run some dirt and maybe some water will enter the tires and once the tape gets loose inside which it will over time you got one wobbling tire there. you can fight the balooning tendency a bit with harder foams. the green panther foams are the hardest i know of. they sould fit the zombies. not sure if you can put them into the smaller badlands. i havn't run the terra pins yet but i can imagine they are not bad for offroad. bye rhylsadar |
which part of the tape do you think gets loose? the edges or the end of the tape? i usually overlap the edge about a 1/2 inch so when the tires do balloon and stretch the extra 1/2 inch should hopefully cover it. or i have heard of some people just taping around the tires twice, and not overlap at all.
yea i wanted to try those green panther foams, but couldnt find any at the time. i hear those are quite well too. but i think you want softer foams and tires if your gonna be doing offroading, which is why i chose the ofna molded medium yellew foams. |
Yea the only time I will tape is when I'm using a beadlock like the set of x-75's I had on my zombies a year ago (I wished I never sold those) they were taped and the tape started comming loose around the edges and I was amazed to see that anywhere you dont use tape the tire will balloon like crazy its kinda funny to see. Anyway they say you should ca glue the edges of the tape and I did but they still came loose. Maybe its time for some zombies again! Now what about some beadlocks?
|
hi
yeah i would also only tape the tires if they are used with beadlocks. also if you overlap the tape or double tape it with time and driving in dirty dusty conditions the thing will become loose. it may hold up quite some time though. if you destroy the rims at the hex or drive down the tires before the tape gets loose its ok of course. my experience is that this is unlikely to happen. i agree that in heavy offroad conditions you may want some soft inserts for better grip. i personally never understood why people where complaining about balooning tires with monster trucks. balooning tires help to control the car when doing backflips etc. so i do not see the negative point there anyways. concerning beadlocks. i only have some experience with the new maximizer beadlocks. they hold up ok. but still come off sometimes. don't know if there are "better" ones. bye rhylsadar |
i think the ballooning issue is that you lose traction. the tires get thinner so theres less of the tire touching the ground. ive always taped my tires, so i really have no experience with running tires that balloon. im not even sure if ballooning tires make you lose thhaaaat much traction...does it? like if you run on loose terrain....

I tape and balance all my MT tyres. I tried to remove the tape on one of them recently and it couldnt come off - no chance of it coming unstuck. Make sure you clean the tyres with metho first (dunno what you guys call it... spirits? just pure alcohol from the hardware store used for a solvent) then I wrap two layers of gaffa tape around the inside.
The rims are nearly always perfectly balanced, so before you glue is a good time to balance the tire - adding strips of tape about 1/4-1/3 the circumference of the tyre on the light spot and after 2 or 3 goes you will have a nicely balanced tyre. zero wobbling or balooning at high speed. Oh, and badlands eat zombie max's for breakfast. - they are also the only tyre ive ever bought that wasnt badly unbalanced (the other being panther 1/10 2.2 sand tyres). That was back before I strapped my tyres though, got some good ballooning going. Vid |
hi
yeah badlands are nice no questions 'bout that. they are quite small however. on the revo it looks ok. on a flm extended savage.... idk. but thats just a cosmetic question. about the taping. so we see how experience differs. i guess it also makes quite a difference how and where you drive your cars how good this taping holds up. or maybe we just had bad luck. bye rhylsadar |
True.. or maybe I just drive my truck like a girl :P nah couldnt be :)
Forgot it was flm extended sav... badlands would look small. 40 series moabs look awesome on the sav XL, so would probably be good on the flm - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXJGS0&P=ML |
As much as I would like to disagree with you sammus..I do think that some 40 series moabs would look tuff.

hey sammus how do you balance your tires? and where do you put the strips of tape at? and do you use the same tape you used to double tape the inside of tire?
