I need / looking for ideas and links for killer crawlers please..:intello: I’ve got the Itch again and I'm done with all my builds.. :whistle:

+1 on the GMADE although i dont have spider (crawler) I had the dragoon but I sold it. They are tough though.

But how will it work in the creek or in the woods on the rocks with moss and dirt and crap (?) does it run as well as it looks. Looks heavy! :whistle: Are they suppose to be (?) how many motors would it have and what KV / turns should it have (?) is there a proper length advantage over another (?) :neutral: sorry I'm just clueless, but I'm doing research so that got to count for something.. lol.lol…

Yeah I'm clueless as well but they do look cool and they do require 2 motors. From what I have heard they are not as good as some of the other stuff out there for crawling but they are still pretty good.

It's about time...

Here are just a few of the local crawling places (I've been to all of these):
-Corona del Mar (on the beach)
-Tewinkle Memorial Park (right next to the OC Fairgrounds)
-Mile Square Park (in the dried up stream off of Edinger and Ward)
-Central Park in HB (around the lake)
-indoor crawling at RCP Crawlers in Upland

If you want to be competitive, go 2.2 class, which stands for 2.2" wheel diameter. It's all the rage right now. The best set of axles would definitely be Axials IMO, in fact I switched to them from my modified Wheely King axles and have had great luck with them.

Those Hustlers look cool, then you get to pick out everything, some fat unbreakable cnc diffs... those crawlers look huge, you could fit a couple 1521 Neus and 10s in there. Do they take points off for flying over the rocks ? j/k hardcore crawlers stop thinking of ways to lynch me with your servo winch

Man theres alot of parts for crawlers, unlimited setups- I dont know how you will decide, bad ass stuff though !!

• The batteries / lipos are different that what we use in our RC’s right (?) are they more like plane or Heli Lipos (small with low runtimes ?)

Depending on what you want to do, you should probably go dive into some heavy reading on rccrawler.com. Right now, I have 4 Axial based crawlers and wouldn't buy anything else for a 2.2 build unless it was a Berg (http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...ducts_id/23788). The biggest thing is to read a lot before you dive into your build.

Hey Shaun maybe i can help you out with these questions. I am not into crawling yet but because it might come up as a future project i have done quite a bit of research.


• Do I want to custom build it or buy a kit (?) I really don’t care about the cost, so no budget restrains it is personal preference really but i like the combination of kit and custom, that way you can start out with something to build from (especially helpful if you don't know where to start building a rock crawler) and use parts from it to make your custom rig.
• Where can I go to read or is there a crawler magazine out that has different builds for viewing (?) The sites they gave you are a good start but because it is becoming more main stream check a look at rcca every once in a while and they will have articles on Crawler tips, and it is also very helpful to talk a look at the RC crawling National rides in the magazine to know what the pros use.
• In rock crawling I want functionality over looks right (?) IE No bling!.. What is cool about rock crawling is it is all about doing what works for you, and it is all about the little tunning secrets that allow your truck to crawl better. Fortunately when building a rock crawler you need to beef it up (mainly around the axles) so "Bling" can be achieved it just may not be all bling, just the needed areas(and then there is CF)
• Do they use Brushed or BL motors (?) I like BL motors but most of the guys use lathe motors which are powerful hight torque brushed motors. Integy sells some. They used brushed because it is easer to control but it is defiantly possible to use Brushless.
• The batteries / lipos are different that what we use in our RC’s right (?) are they more like plane or Heli Lipos (small with low run times ?) yes they are smaller have a lower run times but they get an hour or two of runtime because they are always going slow. Also a lot of guys run 3s lipo so 11.1 volts to get more torque out of there motors.
• Does weight mater (?) heavier or the lighter what is the goal (?) In rock crawling weight is about 40 percent of the game. there is not one set answer for this but generally less weight at the chassis and loads of weight at the axles are the way to go. For example many use weights glued around the outer edges of the rim and on the Axel. For a general rule guys like to have more forward weight than rear.

Lastly if you are going 2.2 it would be a good idea to check out what they call a disconnect Assembly which allows you to engage and disengage 4WD to gain more or less steering.

Definitely check out the Berg axles that Sean referenced. I've had a few crawlers, but if I were building something totally new for competition, it would definitely have the Berg axles.

The people I know who have switched from an Axial comp rig to a Berg comp rig have all noticed a difference due to the lower CoG and built-in "clod-stall" that assists with steep vertical climbs. I'm not going to switch from my Axial comp rig, but if I did it would be Berg.

If you want something a bit less capable but a lot cooler (scale), then check out the Tamiya LandCruiser crawler (aka CR-01). That might very well be my next kit just for fun crawls.

Linc has one of those and seems pleased with it. I would hit him up. I also like 2c4wd's scale crawlers which can use the tamiya bodies.

Visit http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/and look over at some of the builds to see what you would like to build and go from there. You will also get some ideas of parts that you will need.

I spent a good part the weekend (when I wasn’t playing dad) doing research, LOTS of fricken research. (I'm now on two other forums) and I joined the So-Cal Rock basher club.. http://socalrcrc.org and had to add another folder in my fav just for Rock Crawling (it’s a whole world by itself).. Who new (?)

Anyway, every time I would added up the numbers (parts) on all of the different builds I'm entertaining, I kept coming up to the same dam number (over 2K), over 2k, OVER 2K… AAAAaaaHHHHhhaaaa.. So I looked around and realized I have too many toys and It’s time for some to go.. So I posted up my trade offer (808 Pro E RTR) on a few site for a killer Rock Crawler (TRADE) IE one of my 2k+ builds for one of your 2k Rock crawlers.

So far I’ve got one strong yes and one I'm waiting for pictures on anther.

Pitty i just sold this custom tube crawler last night , you would of just had to put it together and put your elecs in there , i had the Axial axles , links , shocks , tires etc.

My next project will be based on a Proffits crawler . Proffits make 1:1 Landcruiser crawlers in the US .

The guy who built this tube chassis which is also based on a Proffits cruiser is building my chassis.

This is the 1:1 Proffits cruiser that my crawler will be based on .

Honestly you build V nice rigs - I think you would be VERY dissapointed (and I would be) if you went down the prebuilt route...

We won't get shots of lots of nice parts - Build from scratch! You know you want to!

If it were me, I'd start with an Axial AX10 ARTR and build it up from there. It's super easy to use as a platform to build off of and parts are readily available for it. It also allows you to ease into crawling and build upon a solid base of a vehicle without having to jump in with both feet and a big credit card.

Damn, that is one fine crawler. It's got some nice parts for sure. Those wheels are some of the best BTW, $100 a set, and they are the EXACT ones on my crawler. Only thing I'd do differently is the body...

Not too sure if TDC wants to compete or just bash (not going to read the entire thread...)

If you want to bash and play, the Tamiya cr-01 landcruiser is great. I currently have a novah crawler esc with a 13.5 motor in it. Good speed. 13mph or so, and it crawls very well with the sensored motor/esc. I have 4 wheel steering, and a few mixes setup thru the M11. Great kit, fun to put together, and looks to be very upgradeable. Plus you can get great runtimes with a 2s 8k true rc pack!!!

I have only change one part so far, the stock slider style driveshafts suck, but electric pede sliders fit right in and can handle everyhting I can throw at the truck. I really beat this truck up, and it keeps coming back for more.

Well I'm going out to look and drive it tomorrow, well see.. :neutral:

Great endorsement! I just picked up a CR-01 myself. Now I just need time to put it together! I really hate the Phillips head screws though. Do you know if someone makes an Allen's head kit for it?

That is a nice crawler. One day I will have one too. :cry:
