What is the world coming to....
So I was just reading the rules over at the NK forum. I am a member there and wanted to make sure that I did not step outside the lines.
I found a somewhat distubing gramatical issue in the rules. Any word that contained letters that were arranged in order in the word to produce a vulgar or "questionable" term were replaced by the same number of *. Example, the word assume would be ***ume, thus removing ass from the word. I am by no means an liberal english major, but this is taking censorship a bit far. And this kind of BS or ******** is starting to gain some sort of acceptance in our society. I can only imagine the hordes or sheep people that for some strange reason think that this is a good idea. If we do not want to expose children to this then I have a feeling that tv would be a better place to start. Can you imagine watching tv and having to hear the last 3 letters of bypass bleeped out. Utter stupidity. Not trying to flame the NK forum, and I have seen this done elsewhere as well. Just find it another useless, poorly aimed method of trying to re-establish morals in our degenerating society... |
Uh Oh.
Hey there Linc hows it going? Sorry to hear of your delema on the other R/C site. I think the issue is more of a liability issue for the site. I doubt very many people care one flying poop if a kid reads it or not, but if their parent finds out they did, then it would become a law suit issue for the site. Yeh it is too bad that things are going to that extent, but look at all of the other crapp people are pulling, like telling State government that they can not have anything like the bible or cross, or the ten commandments anywhere near a State building. We "America" used to stand up for itself and tell whiners that if they do not like the way we do things, to take a flying leap. Now we say "oh we are sorry if we offended your sensibilities. We will remove our Countries heritage from our buildings. America has become weak even on its own soil. That is the real shame of it all.:eyes:

Excellent point Jerry, nice to hear your thoughts!
That is exactly wht I will always curse in public and yell at people who do things wrong. This country was founded on looking past the BS and trying to make something out of Ones-self. I blame the legal system, judges in particular, for not standing up against this sort of BS. Who cares if the bible or something religious is written on a building. As long as we are not being taken over buy a bunch of religious fanatics, crap like that does not matter. I am not religious, but could care less if other people are, their beliefs are just that, theirs. What does that matter? All we have are a bunch of free-loaders looking for a quick buck, and they are wasting our money with their stupid court cases. That kind of stuff should be thrown out, and the people responsible (including the lawyers) should be fined heavily. I try to raise the bar everyday. I was well educated and brought up to always ask questions, and be knowledgable about topics I discuss. I always try to make other people think, and not just go with the popular thought. History shows that the majority of people are more than likely wrong. The majority thought the earth was flat, and that the atom was the smallest thing, look at them now... Always ask why, you will never go wrong if you strive for knowledge. |
That's a bit extreme in the censorship department. America is headed in a very dark direction over all in my opinion... We're losing our edge, our drive, and our spirit I think.
If any of you watch the Bill Moyers Journal, there was a great interview with a retired colonel (name skips my mind, but I know it started with a "B" and sounded Russian) pertaining to where we are as a country at the moment, where we used to be, and where we're going to end up unless we quit being idiots on both the world stage and at home. Interesting skim on PBS's site (the intro to this guy's book) if you wish to read it. It was his (Moyers') most recent interview. |
Scared.
Sorry Joe but I have not seen the interview, but there have been a few very smart and very well known people speaking out on this subject. All have stated pretty much the same thing. The USA is steadily moving in a backwards direction due to the greed of our own politicians. Linc you are correct, a lot of this is being filtered down through the legal system from the very judges that we the people elected to those positions. I understand that they go by the letter of the law so to speak, but somewhere along the line they forgot to keep good common sense in the mix. I mean come on a lady gets Micky-D's HOT coffee and drives with it tucked in her crotch between her legs, then wins a crap load of money saying that it was Ronalds fault. What kind of moron judges these cases?
Then there is this downturn in our economy, which is driving half of our country into a bankrupt state of affairs. So who do you think is bailing these banks out? It is the Chinese and the Arab nations who are buying up huge amounts of our realestate and stocks. Soon we won't even own our own country. :gasp: |
What I don't understand is who they are really trying to protect. Are 10yo really on that forum? Kids start to get pretty trashy mouths at even 13, and considering the pirate language at some of the tracks I've been to, its not like they are going to hear the words somewhere. As long as the language and discussion is not excessively and pointlessly vulgar, I'd just chill out.

This type of censorship is why most of us stopped going to the Traxxas forum. The best type of censorship is self imposed ("it take a village to raise a child") where as a group you have a common goal, wether it be language, porn, or anything else, as long as the common goal among the members is the same, the people that dont want to conform will move on. I do agree that some things are way too liberal - prime time TV has some things that most kids under 12 dont need to be watching - but my kids are all grown up, so what do I care, right?!?!? |

With the US economy as volitile as it is, all it would take is "one small pebble to start an avalanche". It is imperative that we as a people know what is best for ourselves as a whole and act accordingly for the good of the people. |

Besides, killing him would be pointless; he's aleady a braindead zombie... TexasSP - tell me about it. The UK government is even more useless and inept. |

Point!!!!
You see this is exactly the point that Linc is trying to make. If you wrote any of this on that other site you would have been banned for life by now. Honestly with the limits that they do have on that site I am surprized that they have anyone at all posting up there. From what I have seen I find that the majority of the posts up on there are either written by children or childish in nature anyway. I know there are a few good posts, but not many. Sorry if that offends anyone, just a personal observation.
When you have too many rules you tend to run off anyone who can really lend any good information that would benefit the people on the site. I have been on here for over a year now, and I find most of the stuff posted up on here pretty helpful for the most part. Every once in a while you get a really stupid or useful comment, but no one pays attention to them anyway and they move on due to the lack of attention. I actually lost interest after visiting there 3 or 4 times anyway. I also used to be on the UE site as well, but with the lack of product availability I don't see the point anymore. I stop in to RCM at least once a day, and usually several times a day. Not only is there good info here, but good conversations on subjects that have nothing to do with R/C. Some of you guys are not only very helpful, but hilarious to hear from. Thanks guys. |
Cant please 'em all.

I agree with you on self imposed censorship. I think that directly correlates to morals/values/mindset, which is a whole 'nother can of worms entirely (and I don't feel like delving into that). I think it's safe to say we're painting ourselves in a corner. China is on the rise, we're in a crap economy right now (economic cycle will probably hammer itself out, and to be truthful, we should've seen it coming with such a LONG economically prosperous period before our little recession), and socially, well....yeah.... we aren't doing so hot socially I think. Another can of worms. I think one of our largest problems is that we're trying to play policeman all over the world, and it's starting to hurt us badly. We need to come back home and take a good look at ourselves and our own problems. I'm all for hunting down SOBs that kill people for no good reason, but we still cannot neglect our home. You can't jump someone else's car if your own battery is dead, ya know? Neil- You Brits have a funny sense of humor...:na: |

That would be funny... I found the first remark to be witty, especially coming from Neil:rofl: Sorry Neil, had to say that last part... The President is meerly a figure-head. Personally think he was quite inept in his public appearance. He really does not make any of the decisions, but takes the blame for the bad ones.. Sounds like a crappy job to me, and the pay is quite poor, considering the percieved level of responsibility. And if someone was going to pop him off, they should have stepped up 7+ years ago, might have saved us from Gulf War 2, which is turning out to be a shitty sequel... |
Just look at history empires rise and fall - Rome, UK and the collonies, America's had a good run for 50 years... How is your Cantonese
|
I agree with pretty much all that's been said for the most part. Stop worrying about "hurting someone's feelings", and speak the truth! If someone is that hurt by whatever is said, they don't have to read it and can just keep moving on. Man, we as a country are turning into a bunch of weenies!
And I'm not even gonna start on the whole sticking our nose into other countries affairs. All I will say is leave them alone unless they affect us. Then, go in, do whatever it is we need to do, and leave. Basically, sh!t or get off the pot. Let's take care of our own problems first - after all, we have so many. There are a lot of things wrong with this country: general politics, justice system, welfare/social services, not being able to discliple your child because some tool might consider it "abuse", and the list goes on and on and on. No one does anything about it though. The only thing gov't is "good" for is to "protect us from ourselves" with asinine laws and policies, but lets the real problems build up. Just thinking about all this gets me worked up and need to have a cigarette. Gotta watch out though, the gov't might deem that unsafe for me and not let me do that in my own house! Must keep the liquor stored open so the city's drunks can get their fix though! Ever see the movie "Falling Down"? Well, I feel like that sometimes... |

@ first post: I think they have it censored like that so people can't bypass the censors, like using xcrapx or the like. I still find censors to be a pretty much horrible concept though, because if it replaces a word with little stars, it's pretty easy to guess what they said anyhow, and the young ones have undoubtedly seen/heard the word (especially if they are on the internet.) Example: "I hate this ****, why the **** did this happen?" There's only a few words that would fit in there and make gramatical sense. As for the whole religion thing being taken off government institutions and such.. I find it stupid. I am personally an athiest (don't hate me!), but this country was founded on those beliefs, and honestly a cross or other religious symbol really doesn't hurt ANYONE. I remember a few years back there was a military memorial nearby, and it had a large cross that commemorated the veterans that had died in battle. Some group sued to government and it had to be taken down. Was that cross hurting anyone? Not one little bit. What I think is wrong in this country today is that people don't have any patriotism. I'll admit it, I am fairly unpatriotic, but the lengths at which people go to is just plain stupid. I personally find it hard to believe in the government when politics is just one big game, and politicians either follow lobbyists or have to side with what they "describe" themselves as, and not what they really think. A liberal will almost always vote one way, regardless of personal opinion, same with conservatives and so on. Also, you can still be patriotic and disagree with your government on some issues. We live in a free country, and it is one of the greatest countries in the world. Here everyone is, fighting over stupid little things like taxes or abortion, or whatever really, when there are people around the world fighting for just a taste of what we have. As for George W. Bush... he isn't really that bad, the media makes him look stupid, and he is a horrible speaker, but he hasn't really done anything that another generic Republican president wouldn't have. It's really stupid how people seem to have such great hate for him. I remember last year, at the begining of class, the class recited the pledge to the flag. There were multiple people that didn't, and when asked why (my teacher was in the navy for 40 years) they said that they wouldn't recite it or stand as long as Bush is in office. I hope some of this makes sense, as it's kind of fragmented, haha. |
Exactly.
That last issue about refusing to stand and/or say the national anthem is exactly what we are talking about. Standing for and saying that allegiance is showing your support for the United States of America as a country, not for the president or anyother elected US official. I think that some of these morons see a loophole and just jump on the badwagon for the notariety of the situation and nothing more. And you are right Linc the president is nothing more then a pupet doing work for the people and the house of Congress & Senate. He can make very few decisions without support from the majority of our represenitives. So bashing JW is rediculous, but I guess everyone looks for the sinplest target to jump on. To the rest of the modern world JW is America. So of course he gets the blame for what the USA does. He is no different then the leaders of most of the nations around the globe, except for Kim Jung Yiel or how ever you spell his name.
THe only way for people to be heard from the cheap seats these days is for huge amounts of voters to bombard their congressman on the feelings of the people in general. That takes a lot of work and lets face it we have become lazy as a nation so that rarely happens anymore.:oh: |
I go with the flow and watch things go to hell. I just try to ignore all the shit because i have no idea about politics and what not. I Do not know how systems work so i can not say the president is bad or good. But i can say it is not only one man that can put out country in a shit hole. It takes the whole county. People are out to make money and that is it. Parents dont care if there kid reads the word ass, they only see that they can get lots of money if they sue the web site. Same thing with all the warning labels and stupid laws, if people didnt take advantage of this in the first place they would not have to exist. I just live one day at a time and hope for the best.

I disagree that the president is little more than a puppet. The fact that one of the titles the President holds is Commander in Chief means he has plenty of power- at least during times of declared war. Checks and balances doesn't cripple one branch. You could probably argue that the Executive branch of this administration is pushing those checks and balances even.

One Canadian opinion.
I think that when the 25th century anthropologists finish digging us up and sorting through our history, they'll find that the current US administration pointed us towards our demise. When I watch that a**hole Bush telling Russia that they can't just decide to invade a soverign nation, I just have to hang my head in shame. How can you claim the moral high ground when you're standing in a ditch full of bodies? I resent that the whole world has come to look at the US in a negative light, I am Canadian but I think of Americans as my brothers and I wish I could feel as proud of us all as I used to before Bush.

Sorry but i had to add a little humor to this thread. What i really want to know is are you working hard to put food on your family? And if America has the breast and brightest serving in our military then we are screwed.
