RC-Monster Popups....

Is mike letting popups on the site now? I just got my first one today here on RCM.

Here it is... "Just happened a few minutes ago."

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...nRCU/popup.jpg

It really doesnt bother me. I am just curious to why their was a popup... :whip:

E-Traxxer 08.18.2008 09:05 PM

I haven't gotten any pop ups.
It is possible that you have spyware/adware on your computer.

Its labeled RC-Monster in the title of the popup. I'd imagine its from the site.

rc4x4nut 08.18.2008 09:08 PM

I havent gotten any popups. You'd want to run an anti adware/spyware program.

brushlessboy16 08.18.2008 09:10 PM

get firefox

Takedown 08.18.2008 09:13 PM

My comp is clean. I clean it out once a week with defrag and Spybot.

Takedown 08.18.2008 09:13 PM

I prefer IE just because I have flash player and all that stuff already downloaded onto it.

brushlessboy16 08.18.2008 09:15 PM

firefox 2.0 is lightyears ahead
you can get all of those easily

even transfers all your passwords

trev3813 08.18.2008 09:17 PM

im with Ben, every computer i get, first thing, download firefox.

BrianG 08.18.2008 09:19 PM

I don't get popups either, and I'm using IE7. Either Mike forgot to pay some type of advertising-free bill for his webhost, or your computer IS infected with some type of adware despite whatever programs you are using. Check your process list to see if you have any suspicious new programs there.

Takedown 08.18.2008 09:21 PM

Im going to run spybot right now to see what i have on my hands...

BrianG 08.18.2008 09:24 PM

I've had times where Adaware would pick up stuff that Spybot didn't and vice-versa. Also, keep in mind that some of the crap out there are getting pretty smart and may have defeated whatever algorithm anit-spyware programs use. Not saying this is the case, but something to consider...

Agreed. I use Safari on my mac (pretty much a copy of everything from firefox), but Firefox is just so much better than IE it's ridiculous.

TruckBasher 08.18.2008 09:47 PM

I dont think its from Mike...Might need to check your PC...it say RCMONSTER not RC-MONSTER definitely a spam. I suspect you have a worm or something....

I never receive those kind of pop-ups with my firefox or IE

Why? I hear that all the time from younger folk, but nobody ever gives a reason. When my laptop was out for repair, my daughter "banned" me from her laptop because I used IE when I got on it. She thinks that all her problems with her PC are from IE, NOT from all the file sharing crap sites she gets onto......

Takedown 08.18.2008 10:05 PM

Problem solved... Spybot caught one spyware program. Keep in mind that this is the first popup Ive had in a long time.

I run Spysweeper and Norton 360 and I am crap free.....:yipi:...and I hear you about the sharing sites...and MySpace being the worst...the computer my daughter uses is loaded with crap and I have told her to stop going to the sites, I would spend lots of time cleaning up that computer but I am tired of wasting my time and now it is very slow and she has been told when the computer crashes she can go to the library to use a computer...I wont buy another one

BrianG 08.18.2008 10:22 PM

Just hand her the OS CD and tell her to have fun! Reloading an OS, drivers, and all the apps will teach her a lesson.

I did the same. I got tired of trying to explain that computers dont just break on their own, and that the sites she visits are often where she picked up the "junk" that continually killed it. So for graduation she got a new laptop. After she opened it, I handed her the paperwork (included a 3 year warranty), and told her to call them, not me. Problem solved!

Do you honestly think a teenager would take the time to read something like that? She refused to look at her owners manual for an entire week until she realized I was serious that I wasnt going to have anything to with her new one (less paying for it of course!).

Then I think she will really end up in the library, either because PC got screwed or she doesnt want to start rebuilding it

Well, then she doesn't get her PC back, and she is forbidden from using other computers even at the library (unless it's strictly for homework). Pretty simple to me. One time of going through the process will teach her to be a little more conscientious about what she downloads/installs, and how to maintain it. Harsh lessons are the best ones, and are the ones I favor for my kids. No need to yell, threaten, spank, etc.

MetalMan 08.19.2008 12:50 AM

Internet Explorer has posed no problems for me. In fact I'm still running IE6 on my XP computer because that XP copy is non-legit...

Then IE7 is on my laptop. I have Firefox installed on both computers, but I just prefer the simplicity of IE7 to Firefox for some reason.

TruckBasher 08.19.2008 12:55 AM

I think it is all user preference at the end of the day it will all depend on the site we visit and how much much we maintain our system (for those newer and smarter worms or spywares).

TDC57 08.19.2008 01:54 AM

For what it’s worth:
I've got my mane computer as the home server and all of the other computers go thought it, that way i block the sites i don’t want the kids or the wife on :mdr:. Dad does all of the maintenance on the server (my computer) = no issues at all on theirs

Worth a try (?)

BrianG 08.19.2008 09:57 AM

At home, I have a small home network, so I use a router/switch. The seperation from WAN and LAN helps (don't forget to change the default router password). Then, I run ZoneAlarm firewall, AVG Fee A/V, Spybot, and Adaware spyware programs.

There is an easy way around running IE7 on a non-legit XP installation.

I too have FF, but use IE more. It just loads faster and I'm lazy.

Loads faster? you running ie6 my ie7 takes on average 4-5 seconds longer to launch. once opened they both load pages equally well.

I have been using FF for so log now it is habit.

BrianG 08.19.2008 10:14 AM

My IE7 loads up almost instantly.

As does mine on my Vista laptop. It loads up faster than Firefox.

I need new hardware.... it may be time to cough up the cash and retire the p4 3.2HT to a storage box.

BrianG 08.19.2008 11:51 AM

Sheesh, talk about old hardware; I use an Athlon64 single-core (socket 754 IIRC) 2.2GHz CPU, 1GB PC3200 (I think) DDR Corsair RAM, dual 35BG Raptor drives in Raid0. Haven't reloaded XP in about 5-6 years now.

Arct1k 08.19.2008 12:01 PM

Smart caching on vista - provided you have enought RAM it pretty much preloads iE in memory for quick starting

asianplayer 08.20.2008 04:23 AM

yeah on vista loading iE is faster, but everything else is slower, i just build a new comp, quad core, 8gb memory and still this thing's start up is slower then a pig crawling through molasses in winter. Its so slow, and since im running 8gb i have to use the 64bit version and no programs run it. However i have to say i run firefox and i like it, APB is nice, no problems at all.

You think that's old? My machine's limping along on an old 1.4Ghz Athlon T-Bird (Socket A if I remember rightly) with 768mb of 133mhz SDRAM, a single Maxtor 40bg HD, a 256mb GeFore FX5500 and Windows 2K lol! Thankfully I have a brand new machine that I'm going to sort out at the end of the week (E8400 CPU, 4gb 667mhz DDR2, 512mb 9600GT, Vista 32-bit etc etc).

I use FireFox 3 as well, and I love it. Much prefer the interface to IE, and it runs quicker too.

Dafni 08.20.2008 06:46 AM

Microsoft Internet Explorer?? :oh:

Linux rules!

Arct1k 08.20.2008 07:27 AM

If you want to see/use 4gb you will need vista 64 - vista and xp 32 will only be able to use about 3.25 GB of the 4GB due to memory addressing limitations of a 32bit os.

You might want to check your build - I'm only running a Core2 at 3.3ghz with 4GB on Vista 64 and it boots very quickly 15 secs or so. The main thing that slows it down is anti-virus / spyware initiatisation.

I have had very very few issues with Vista 64 - everything runs including CastleLink... (Except with the MM - works with BEC and MMM)

I know, but 3.25GB or so of addressable RAM is still better than 2GB. I've been battling over whether it'd be worth going for Vista 64-bit instead, but I think I might do. Thanks for the tip.

i might be able to beat you, pentuim 2 , 128mb of ram, 6.8 gb of hard drive, runnin win xp hacked with vista theme, and shes runnin firefox and aim at the same time and she still flys :surprised:

BrianG 08.20.2008 03:30 PM

lol, this thread is backwards with people comparing how old/slow their systems are. It would be like guys bragging how small their tools are.

trev3813 08.20.2008 04:10 PM

im not braggin, i wish i could have a better comp
