MMM v2 Success / Failure Poll

I consider myself to be a seasoned RC Enthusiast and someone who has been online using forums for years yet I'm confused about the current state of the MMM v2. I know that online, people generally speak the loudest when they have a complaint. It's human nature to want to share a bad experience while countless other good or normal experiences go without comment. So I suppose it is possible that for every person who complains that their MMM v2 has failed, there are 10x, 20x or more people who have it work normally.

So I wanted to create a simple poll to tally the three possible outcomes, it is working normally, it has failed and a third category, it has failed and did so in a dangerous manner. After waiting way too long I have my MMM v2 and I have run it to test my wiring and such but I'm concerned about the posts with charred units and potential units on fire. My MMM v2 is mounted millimeters away from my LiPo pack and I don't really want to see anything violent happen if mine were to fail. If you post a comment, I'd ask you to keep it simple. You can create a new thread with photos of the gore. I just want to know if it works or not and if there is a potential safety concern.

Personally I'll be scoring my vote on Saturday after my MMM v2's first Race Day. I figure 4 packs through it and I should know if mine works or not.

26 hours strong

Dragonfueled 09.01.2008 09:20 PM

had one v2 charbroiled but the second one is working good. 4 sets of packs so far.

Where is the "Working normally, with mods" option? I know, I know, you just want stock ESCs...

Funny tho as your avatar has "no fans" but mods are necessary for the esc to work right? I'd leave it as works out of the box or doesn't

wade7575 09.01.2008 10:06 PM

Mine just gave up I think it was a internal BEC problem,or at least that's what all the sign's point to.

asheck 09.01.2008 10:27 PM

This is a great idea. But you might want to link to this from just the brushless forum since most here are probably looking at problems with their controllers.

jhautz 09.01.2008 11:35 PM

Out of 4 MMMs I have one failed V1 with the BEC issue, and 2 V1 working normally with minor mods, and 1 V2 working normally with minor mods.

EDIT: I want to add that every single fan has failed on every MMM untill I completely cut the grill out of the top of the case. After doing that the fans seem to last forever.

auto2 09.01.2008 11:53 PM

v1 and v2 both working fine. I use them 2 or 3 timess a week all at the track.
5s 1515 and 1512 buggy and truggy. never had a problem.

entjoles 09.01.2008 11:58 PM

1 v2 mmm, bec failure , just quit working

I don't follow. My avatar reflect my distaste for fans, which I feel are not needed in a proper setup.

The mods are an attempt to keep these MMMs working until the real fix is out. I mod all my stuff for what I feel should have been done right at the factory. This means removal of fans, adding the necessary heatsinking, circuit mods, etc. It's served me well so far as I've never burnt an ESC or had one go bad.

Whether to mod or not (and how far to go) is up to the user. I personally don't care if the mods void the warranty because I got it very cheap. If I paid full price, I'd probably not want to mod it right away either. But, the mods I've done seem to keep it working, and it's a V1. Another member has done the same and his seems to be working too (so far). To each his or her own I guess.

I don't force anyone to do it. On the contrary, I try to dissuade people with disclaimers and making them aware of the worst case scenario.

Huh? what do heatsinks do - dissipate heat from a component.
what do fans do - help dissipate heat from the heatsink.

Whats wrong with that?

Sorry for off-topic, but all these threads are going round in circles now anyway. The poll is a good idea though.

J3110 09.02.2008 05:22 AM

Thought I mighta been one of the lucky ones. Guess I am since nothing melted, but the MMM simply stopped working after about 8Ah of use.

TruckBasher 09.02.2008 05:40 AM

mine just died (BEC IMO) just after i voted mine is still working  ..she as 2hrs of runtine before BEC died

Happywing 09.02.2008 07:41 AM

The previous post is what makes these polls inaccurate. It happened on the V1 failure poll too. People post that it's working fine and the next day it broke. Mine is working fine after 1 hour of use, but I'm not going to answer the poll until I have a couple more hours on it.

TruckBasher 09.02.2008 08:10 AM

well the problem of any poll specially for electronics is that they have a tendency of failing...I guess we need to specify a time frame when they can reply to the poll...V2 was released a month ago and they are just being send to buyers in the last 2 weeks (mass distribution)....most died during calibration or first few minutes...

Editing post:
If MOD is allowed my V2 now has been revived by BrianG's Mod

DickyT 09.02.2008 08:30 AM

v2, 16 hours and still kicking.

E-Revonut 09.02.2008 09:10 PM

mine is still up and running but today after running it I found it bouncing around. What is everyone using to hold their monsters in? I had used Goo, it's still stuck to the truck but didn't hold onto the MMM.

magman 09.02.2008 09:18 PM

My v1 quit yesterday...I changed all the esc settings to go to 5s, ran it for 5min and it killed the external ccbec and the esc itself...oh well.

JaySki 09.02.2008 09:29 PM

lost 2 V2s to (Assumed) BEC failures.
1 v2 running after about 6-8 sets of at 4s WITH a UBEC added.

e-mike 09.02.2008 09:47 PM

:surprised: it's very close to 50%of total failure for 36 guy's:whistle:

patrick said to me in e-mail that they have less than 1%of total failure!!???for the v2:rules::yes:

brushlessboy16 09.02.2008 09:48 PM

the must have all gotten the bad ones though

e-mike 09.02.2008 09:53 PM

guy wo buy 4mmm and 4 failed.....lucky....

we are away of the 1%

brushlessboy16 09.02.2008 09:58 PM

so 40 is 1% of 400 shipped lolz

Texas-Pete 09.02.2008 10:13 PM

These are serious statements (I called to get my MMM replaced):

Me:Alright one more question... How many MMM's have shiped?
CC Rep: Around 1600
Me: How many have you gotten back from failures?
CC Rep: About 50 back....

I don't know how truthful they are being....

So that's about a 3.5% failure rate..
..

Electric Dave 09.02.2008 10:19 PM

I want to believe those numbers but they do not seem to jive with the poll results thus far. Granted the sample is still very very small and I still think people tend to want to report bad news more than good or just average news.

Very odd.

Texas-Pete 09.02.2008 10:23 PM

What I thought was the oddest, is that we've been told that the MMM's shipped were closer to 3000... And now we're being told 1600... I bet the failed units are more around 150 or so more around a 9.3 percent failure rate...

The mmmv1's had a 20 percent failure rate.

auto2 09.02.2008 10:29 PM

well of course the only way this can be accurate is if castle posted the actual statistics.
and i think they give more than enough already. oh and my v1 and v2 are still working LOL!

emaxxnitro 09.03.2008 05:03 PM

the next time mine goes out im going to ask castle to put mine to the test before they ship it.

You guys have to remember that people who have no problems are not likely to go on the internet looking for info on forums about problems. These polls are NEVER a real indicator of the real size of the problem.

But if all the rcm members contribute (even the good ones), we should see an close indication, or at least the percentage of rcm members that have gotten good/bad ones.

stum 09.03.2008 08:46 PM

I voted for +1 v2 mmm working, but I have a second one that is took a dump with less than 10 minutes of running if someone wants to add a "failure" to the poll. My working unit has been through weeks of racing w/o any issues.

Thanks!

BrianG 09.03.2008 08:55 PM

Added the failure for ya HappyWing. If anyone else has multiple MMMs and have already voted, post the results from the other one(s) and I'll add it to the tally.

TruckBasher 09.03.2008 09:03 PM

Nice one Brian, now the poll can be more accurate..... both for failure and success

slimthelineman 09.03.2008 09:17 PM

i had both my v2's fail, one during calibratin, the other after 10 min.

BrianG 09.03.2008 09:24 PM

OK, to be clear, let me know of any EXTRA MMMs you want me to adjust in the poll. Once I add each person's extra ESCs, I will edit their post simply to state (in the "reason for editing" section) it was done.

slim: I assume you already entered one of your failures, correct?

jayjay283 09.03.2008 09:27 PM

Brian, in post #2 and the poll, I put 1 working V2, I have a 2nd one with 4.5 hours on it still working fine, if you want to add a 2nd working for me to the poll
