to mod or not to mod

with my MMM on the way im starting to worry about it failing when i use it, so should i just do the mods as soon as i get it? I dont want to mess up the warranty with Castle, but i would like to have a working esc for longer than 10 min. I am also fairly confident in my soldering skills, by no means pro but not horrible either.

Thanks!

jhautz 09.01.2008 11:55 PM

I say mod it. CC will still cover it if its juut the basic mods. I have had great luck with the 3 MMMs (2 V1s and 1 V2) that I did the mods right out of the box. The one (V1) that I didnt mod right away lasted a while, but eventually failed.

I cant see how fixing their design flaws would void the warranty.

DRIFT_BUGGY 09.01.2008 11:59 PM

Only mod I did to my V1 was ext. bec and it is still running strong

shizzon 09.02.2008 12:03 AM

isn't there a thread on here with a step by step how to?

ptt81 09.02.2008 12:08 AM

This is what i did on mine right out of box, still going strong, try this before you go any further

Thanks, I saw your post and it looks like a good idea, where did you pick up the fan and various bits?

ptt81 09.02.2008 12:33 AM

I got the fan at http://www.thetoyz.com/cart/thetoyz_...name=HEATSINKS

The o-ring something I already had laying around, here is a similar ones from Tower

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXN166&P=ML

The window screening I got them from my dad, I think you can get them at home depot but they sell them in large roll only

shizzon 09.02.2008 12:37 AM

Thanks alot!! i think i can find something to work as a screen.

ptt81 09.02.2008 12:43 AM

yeah basically anything would do, I would even use a fish net that you would can easily get at a local pet store for cheap

You guys crack me up modding your MMM just so it'll work.
Why would you do that? Are we desperate to be castle consumers or to have a quality product...I mean, come on.
Only reason I bought a MMM was because I already had something that worked ok, but wanted something better, so if you are buying the MMM expecting it to work after reading about all of the failures, then you shouldn't be surprised if it dies.
I do not want to have to mod my MMM to keep it alive...that is rediculous. I want a reliable and robust speed controller. I want what I am paying for...not a glorified MM. What more are you getting when you slap a BEC on the MMM? Not much.
Unless you have a V1, there is no guarentee that an external BEC will help anyways...just a "maybe".
I mean, by all means, it is a free world and you can do as you like, of course, but you are only shooting yourself in the foot by protecting and making excuses for an obviously substandard product(or manufacturing).

Not at all. I am afraid of getting ripped off by Castle after having seen all of the warning signs and ignored them.

If you guys wanna void the warranty to (hopefully)fix production issues and keep making excuses for why you don't send a faulty product back to the maker, then go right ahead. You're not helping to get the issue resolved, though.

BrianG 09.02.2008 09:52 AM

You're right, we shouldn't have to mod. But, it must get a little tiring to send back ESC after ESC to Castle for warranty work. For most people, the reason why they buy the MMM despite the problems is probably because of price, 6s capable, and programmability.

TruckBasher 09.02.2008 10:36 AM

not to flame or anything but CC doesnt really force us to do this. I am not happy with CC ESC failing but rather than go over shipping it back I prefer to have it modded to i can burn it..i mean play with it  . Anyway, no one to blame but me cause I bought it even the fact I knew that it was still failing. My 2nd MMM was purchased on EBAY 2nd week of Aug (failed reports started), the first one hasnt arrive yet.

If you feel that you are getting ripped better look for other ESC....or maybe wait for RX8 beta test seems to be good..for us we just want to run our toys...

George16 09.02.2008 10:49 AM

I just bought another since the replacement for my V1 has not arrived yet. I'm leaning on modding it whenever it arrives. I think CC should just do the mod themselves to include installing a UBEC. I think this is easier and faster than retooling again.

BashemSmashem 09.02.2008 11:08 AM

I don't think you should have too do ANYTHING too the MMM too get it working correctly .

It should work the way its advertised too do and thats it , end of story .

Nobody disagrees with you. It should work properly, so you shouldn't have to mod it.

The reality of the situation is that many of us want to band-aid these things until Castle figures out the real solution. The only alternatives are to not run our vehicles, or to spend money on different products, most of which will also need band-aids of some form or another.

If my next one fails, I will choose to mod it so that I can run my truck until Castle resolves the real fix. A slightly modded MMM is still better than anything else I've used, IMO.

J3110 09.02.2008 02:06 PM

Clearly, if you want a product you can rely on, don't get the MMM, I get it.
I had 2 backups, so I was not one of those people. Sure, it is frustrating knowing a product you bought is most likely going to fail.
Have any modded MMMs failed yet?

shizzon 09.02.2008 05:06 PM

Just like you guys ideally i would not have to mod the thing to make it work...but if it helps in any way to prevent a failure than i will be willing to try as long as it stays within warranty with Castle..

ffactory666 09.03.2008 04:33 AM

Guys i'll probably get flamed in the CC thread but with some of you spending the money and frying multiple MMMs why don't you just buy an R1 Pro for a bit more . Just put a 35v capacitor on it and an external bec , the esc is more than capable of handling 4s and works great on 5s and i haven't heard of one failure , heck this little speedy doesn't even use a fan .

I use one but do have a v2 on the way for another project , but the way things are going i think i'll just sell the v2 new and buy another R1 Pro for a bit more or wait for reports on the Losi .

Now for guys wanting to run 6s i can understand but for 5s or lower i don't get why people don't spend the extra $20 on the R1 Pro .

Let the flaming begin.

TruckBasher 09.03.2008 04:50 AM

Hehe I couldn't resist..you are right...or like I mentioned on another thread wait for the RX8. This is a good advise to the guys that needs a working product but we cant guarantee flawless operation. We might see more and more thread saying "my R1 Pro failed or burn"..Just my opinion...peace to everyone...

For me since I have an MMM i rather modd what I have than get another one. Also I would also get an MM if in case I need a new one since it worked for me already and I know it works fine on 5S. Not that I am against Tekin, Jeff (jhautz) has a working modded R1pro and it never gave up on him (so far no to jinx you Jeff  )...

cheesecake 09.03.2008 05:08 AM

i plan on modding my mmm when it gets here. also the teken idea has crossed my mind for the buggy and putting the mmm in the truggy when it shows up but im not sure i have a couple weeks to decide

Great.... Now I'm screwed....
:slap:

(kidding)

I think the R1Pro is great. My modified one is still running strong with temps cooler than I got with the MMMv1 I was running while the R1Pro was being moded. And with no fans. :great: Even in stock form it handled my buggy with no issues. As long as you dont go to crazy with overpowering it. However I think running a big MT on it might not be a great situation. If that ESC just had a heatsink built in.

TruckBasher 09.03.2008 11:06 AM

Peace Jeff, BTW im also Jeff :intello:

But seriously, I know R1Pro handles well thats why I sited your setup as an example (a great one I should say)

To bad Griffin is down while he is in the process of moving out to his new place...
