Latest conversion project - HB GT10

I know it's not a new model, but been wanting to build one of these for a while. Definitely paid more than I had hoped having to order it from the UK, but after about 2 weeks wait it just came in the mail last night.

Here's my thoughts on the build:

HB GT10
TP eXtreme V2 2600 - 6S lipo
CC MMM ESC
RCM motor mount
Custom battery tray from Mike 40x132mm (just ordering this now)
Servo - not sure yet, will try stock one to start
Neu 1512 3.5D (1500kv) or 1509 2y (1820kv) (have both, just not sure which will be better)

The motor mount side of the car looks to be a pretty easy setup, but the battery mount side may be a bit tight. The spur is pretty huge at 54T.

With stock gearing of 12T/54T pinion/spur and final drive of 13/40 the speed calculate out at just a touch over 35mph with the 1512 on 6S and the 1509 on 5S. I would save about 1/4lb with the 1509 on 5S compared to the 1512 so that may not make a big difference either way.

Going to fleabay out the nitro and radio stuff to make a little back.

Some pics to follow later tonight.

If anyone has some input on shock oil weight and diff oils to try front and back I am open to suggestions. Also if anyone knows any mandatory or recommended upgrades to help reliability please let me know. From the threads I have read, the front and rear CVDs may be a necessity.

I have read the stock tires are just OK, but at an odd size of about 5" I'm not sure what alternatives may be out there. Since I'll be running it on most grass and off-road gravelly stuff the tires may be fine.

rootar 09.17.2008 01:28 PM

the gt10 is an ls10 with dual shocks, taller shock towers, different body, and 14mm wheel hex with maxx size wheels, right? is there any more chassis changes?

go with 35 wt oil in the rears, and 40 in the fronts to start with since you have 4 shocks on each end

VintageMA 09.17.2008 01:39 PM

Yep - that's pretty much it I think. I checked that parts list before making the purchase and it seems almost all of the LS10 and GT10 parts are the same model #s.

I'll probably run the shocks stock just to check out the handling and adjust form there. Will def fill the f/r diffs before running though.

Thx.

lincpimp 09.17.2008 02:04 PM

For a similar height tire, the panther kmodo gragon lp tires on maxx rims should do. Part number t140ms on the tires, not sure what offset wheel to use...

Sounds like a great conversion, the 1512 on 6s will be a beast. The 1509 on 5s may be more driveable.

rootar 09.17.2008 03:13 PM

youll use half offset wheel with the komodo LP's i run these on my LS10 and my slash, if your wanted a tad bit extra width go with the rpm stable maxx wheels they are nice.

front diff use 7000 and rear diff use 3000 or less if your just bashing itll be a blast with out a center diff but if you want it to handle and run like an 1/8 scale use a crt.5 center diff with 5000 in the center and itll handle completely different and my rear dogbones are lasting ALOT long than they did with the slipper.

BL_RV0 09.17.2008 11:36 PM

+1 on the 1512. Sounds like a great conversion!!

I have a set of these if your are interested. Used slightly on my old GT10. Much better tires than the stockers. PM me if you are interested. Cheap. No use for them any more myself.

Gee 09.18.2008 05:27 PM

That will be a nice setup. I'm enjoying the ls10 I got. The Neu will be nice in it. I've been messing around with the cheaper motors and trying differnt KV and pinion. Always seems to come down to the motors temp. That shouldn't be a factor with the neu.

Are the carries for the GT10 and LS10 the same? I seemed to go through a lot of the small bearings so I'm trying out f/r carries that take the larger 5x11 bearing now. Seem to be holding up a lot better as far as the bearings are concerned.

VintageMA 09.21.2008 09:22 PM

This weekend I got the motor mounted, filled the f/r diffs (7k/3k), trimmed the servo tray down and got everything ready for a quick trial.

The brand new MMM went up in smoke when running the wheels slowly holding the truck after about 30 seconds after calibrating. It was working okay and then just a pop burnt smell and then nothing. It took one of the HPI SF-1 servos out with it too (glad it was a cheapo servo and not the good one I have on order).

So to a back-up MM with 5S and CC-BEC, still using the 1512 and 12T gearing. Just been doing a little small driving around the house to check things out. The MM was getting a little warm on 5S so I need to pull a little fan out of the toolbox to cool things down.

Right off the bat I can see a few pretty weak areas. The hub carriers seem to be a little thin and the a-arms seem to be very soft and bendable - not sure if that will be a problem.

The servo saver is pretty flimsy, but I found a stornger plastic spring, so we'll see. The stock servos are pretty slow and not too powerful.

Still waiting for the battery tray - so cell just ziplocked in place to test out the truck. A few pics to follow.

rootar 09.22.2008 12:14 AM

the arms are TOUGH i have broken one of the front hub carriers, youll need to get better wheel and diff bearings, get the half rubber sealed/ have metal sheiled and put the sheilded inside towards each other and that take care of that problem, you can also ditch the stock servo saver for a heavy duty kimbro one for and old style emaxx/tmaxx.

oh and when you really get to run it the body mounts are as good as gone you can get some losi eight-T body mounts and snip the bottom holes off, you can also use rustler/pede/slash rear body mounts front and rear with minor trimming.

rootar 09.22.2008 12:25 AM

MY BAD the body mounts i listed will not work on yours due to the extra shocks, hmmmm whats gonna happen is the post is gonna break right down at the bottom, you could cut and sand them off and drill a 3mm hole through where the post goes and use some of the removable front traxxas electrics post (slash or rustler) and cut them to the length you want.

Gee 09.22.2008 02:43 AM

Sorry to hear about the mmm. It doesn't sound like you were too suprised it happended. I haven't had the need for anything over 4s yet but whenever I hook up any new esc for the first time the thought it might blow is there. Had my share of different esc going up in smoke. It's always a bummer but especially if there's no backup.

The 5x10 bearings didn't hold up real well for me. Haven't had any problems with the 5x11 since I put them in. I've been looking into using the HPI servo saver that is built into the bell crank on my ls10. I want to get rid of the one that's on the servo and just use a small horn on it. Looks like it should work just need the right drag link or make my own.

Your truck looks good.

RE: MMM - it alright, I have two working V1s so I know I was due at some point.

Do you know if the 5x11mm bearing (I could use the spares for the CRT.5 I would imagine) are a drop in replacement?

Do you have a link to that servo saver? I was looking at things and thinking you might be able to use the CRT.5 (or another brand too) servo saver on the truck and then use the stock drag link to make the spacing right.

Seems like the bearing are an issue - what behavior did you notice when the bearings went? (so I know what to look for)

I'll address the body mount issues as they arise.

Going to start digging around to see what I can find for servo saver options.

I know this build thread isn't going to be the most popular as it's an older model at this point. But, I appreciate everyone's input.

VintageMA 09.22.2008 11:06 AM

I'd have to measure things up, but I wonder if the x-ray XB8 line servo saver would work on this buggy:

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...oducts_id/8618

I'll take a measure of my XB8EC saver and see if the height and the mounting screws are the same.

Well okay - I guess that has never truely happened to me yet.

Do you guys think the CVDs are a worthwhile investment. I've read through just about every thread on here that talks about the LS10 and GT10 and although there aren't a lot of people who have broken the dogbones there seems to be a lot who say they pop-out - especially the front ones hitting bumps in a sharp turn.

I have to say I feel the drive train in the GT10 is VERY smooth. And it does feel as thought the arms are a little better leveraged for the size compared with the crt.5 with the extended chassis and bigger tires.

I'm running a 1512 2.5d (2050kv) in my .5 on 5S and although it's overpowered it never feels like the power is going to rip the truck apart. With the 1512 3.5d (1500kv) even on 5S it felt like I could rocket the truck to the moon on take-off if I wanted to.

Since I am using the MM with 5S for the time being until my MMM (or another 6S capable ESC) finds itself my way in working condition, I may just go down to the 1509 2y (1820kv) - I don't think it will have any problems pushing the truck around.

Gee 09.22.2008 11:01 PM

I replaced the rear and front carriers to get 5x11s to fit. One of the rears carriers broke on mine and I didn't have a LS10 one to replace it with. So was digging in a parts bin and found one that looked like it would work. Turn out it fit fine. I don't know how it got in my parts bin it was the only one I could find of it. Turned out it was the rear carrier from a Traxxas Nitro 4-tec. Never owned one of them. So order a couple more of them. Haven't had any breaking issues using them. As far as the front goes I took a gamble and grabbed a set of the front upright for the e-firestorm from the lhs (impulse item) should of seen the dust on that bag. I put them on and they are working out good but had to some mixing of bearing to get it to work right.

It's going to be easier for me to show you a couple of pictures so I wll go take some and do that. Would like your guys input on it anyway. Also the servo saver stuff I will post up and maybe get some help there also.

I don't want to steal or junk up your build thread so I will put it in a differnent one.

rootar 09.22.2008 11:21 PM

the cvds will break just like the dogbones, just stock up on spare dogbones, they WILL break no matter what, i have neve had one pop out actually but i have broken 14 of them and counting, like i did sya before they are lasting ALOT longer with a center diff over the slipper setup.

Takedown 09.23.2008 07:59 AM

Nice clean conversion. What are you going to do about the hanging TP pack? Would you run a saddle pack with both packs ontop of each other to set a smaller footprint on the chassis.

Mister-T 09.23.2008 08:35 AM

@ rootar

same thing happen to me on my RC10T4, large tyre rotating fast just kill bearing.
There is a lot of stress on them, I needed to change those bearing 3 times so far

HAH!! :lol::lol:

I had just zip-tied that into place to be able to test drive the truck around the house a bit.

I have a custom 40x132mm battery tray on order from Mike that I will be putting in the truck. Just got the click-n-ship notice this morning so hopefully I'll have that by the weekend along with my new servo from a-main.

VintageMA 09.23.2008 12:37 PM

I do wanna run 6S in this truck, so I went forward and got one of these:

http://mgm-compro.com/index.php?tid=...-boat-e-series

Going to have a 10-12S project coming up sometime next summer, so I wanted to give the MGM another try and see how it performs.

VintageMA 09.25.2008 06:21 PM

Got the servo and Mike's custom 40x132mm battery tray in the mail yesterday.

The servo makes a world of difference. The stock one was - well - pretty much what you would expect from a stock analog servo.

Mike's new single piece design battery tray fits really nice. Just had to trim a touch off the lower outside edge so it would fit sung with the chassis.

Big arghhh!!! Don't know why all my images have just come up with broken link right now. Seems like the Picassa links go away after a while or something.

Here's the link to the album if interested:

Finally got the chance to really give the truck a run this weekend.

Saturday was the first real run and a few issues - the stock tires really balloon a lot and would cause the truck to flip when turning because the inside wheel would balloon up big and push the side of the truck up.

Other issue was that the weight was a little to far forward so the truck was very front heavy.

Last night I moved the battery tray much farther back in the truck and today it was running tons better.

Also - I had gotten a spare set of tires and wheel and took the time to follow this thread here:
http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...t=tire+tapping
It was my first try and tire tapping and it worked out phenomonally. The truck ran awesome.

I know these pics won't last for a long time, but here's an Eagle Tree of the run and some of the final build pics.

All right - I don't get it.

This type of embedded image entry used to work fine, but now even with a link I am copying tonight fresh the embedding isn't working. Wonder if something changed on the configuration for this site?

Anyway - here's some uploaded jpegs.

The 1512 is way too much power for the truck, but who cares. It isn't heating up at all and the extra weight with the 6S battery just gives it a little more stability.

As you can see from the Eagletree, except for one big peak of 1400 watts, the general max amp draw was about 800 watts or so with a peak amperage of around 40 - 45 amps.

Running for about 12 minutes used ~1200mA, so I figure about 20-25 minutes of hard running on a TP 6S 2600 mAh pack.

I bet that 1512 on 6s is something else. I'm half that at 3s on a 3300 medusa. You must have practice with a light trigger finger. I like the truck body on there. Doesn't seem to have many options for bodies, but haven't did much of a search for them. I don't get why your pics aren't working. You can open an account on photobucket and see if you get the same results. Might help narrow down where the problem is.

VintageMA 10.05.2008 09:40 PM

Thanks - I'll give the photobucket a try.

It's a ton of fun - wish I could do a video but usually just play around in the park and can't drive and shoot at the same time.

The body has a weakness right behind the front wheels. I landed on the lid a few times and the lexan's already snapped and sagged.

I got a new body to paint, but ended up getting the LS10 body instead of the GT10 by accident. Since it's pretty much the same truck it should fit just fine.
