Modded V1 & V2 long term testing

Hi guys,

Just thought I'd start another thread on the testing of the modded V1 & V2 MMM. As mentioned in the other thread, I did the BrianG mod on my V1 & V2 residing in a X1 CR buggy & X2 truggy respectively.

Modded V2 survived another short bashing session on Saturday.

Modded V1 had a full race day today. The weather is very cool for this part of the world around 28 to 30 deg C & but humidity is high as it had just rained earlier in the morning prior to the race. I ran both nitro & electric (modded V1) as 2 persons.

I am happy to say that V1 survived 3 rounds of 5 minute qualifying & made it to the A main (6th qualifier out of 13). However, as A main was 30 minutes, I sweet talked the race director into swapping my running order as my nitro qualified way down the order in B main. So I ran 15 minutes of B main using my modded V1. I came in second.

Sometime into the 3rd heat, the fan stopped working. Not sure what happened but I ran the buggy anyway straight 15 minutes in teh B with a non working fan.

So all in all, a pretty happy outing for the v1 :yipi:

HN drivers - but my HN nitro killed its rear diff & I had to run my backup TTR S3

Waiting for the nitros...

Hmmm, I have just finished charging my battery. After 15 minutes of hard racing, the charger put back around 3600mah back to the battery. This means that in theory, my 6000mah battery should make nearly 25 minutes of run time !

How were your temps with no fan?

I'm all out of MMM's right now. I sent #5 back to Castle on Friday.

I was kind of busy as I was running both nitro & electric so didn't have the chance to check. Just blast away

Did you take the temp while running without a fan?

tc3_racer_001 09.21.2008 06:47 PM

joe- i ran 15 minutes as well, with a zippy 4800 pack - and i only put 3300 mah into it. that means i could almost make 30 minutes! i will have to see if i can get my neu to be cooler though... it was running a bit hot! (its first race day)

joeling 09.22.2008 11:02 AM

Hi guys,

I did not check my temps at all, just went ahead & ran the race. Came in about 18 seconds or nearly half a lap behind the B main winner who is a much better driver than me.

if you could take some temps and report back id be very happy :)

well done- more practise is what i need to get in the top drivers. perhaps next season i can try for a trophy! :P

joeling 09.23.2008 04:19 AM

Ok I will do that next time. I think that will only happen 2 weeks from now. This weekend is family time.

I'm resigned to the fact that I'll only be a middling driver. I am not serious enough to study the racing line or practice nearly often enough. Instead I like to jump high & far & muck around with electric cars.

So I just go out there & have fun with the boys. Of course, I really like to hassle them with the electric conversions.

BTW, don't forget mental toughness when you're racing. It makes a big difference.

Hi guys,

2 weeks have gone by & once again i had a chance to do more testing / bashing with both vehicles :

1) buggy - during the last race, the fan stopped working. Replaced the fan with a 3racing unit & ran her for about 10 minutes yesterday. Temps were :-

a) motor 50+ deg. C
b) battery 30+ deg. C
c) esc less than 40 deg. C
d) ambient - about 30 - 32 deg C

Still alive & kicking

2) Went on to play the truggy until LVC kicked in. Temps immeditely after the run was :-

a) motor 65+ deg. C
b) battery nearly 50 deg. C
c) esc less than 40 deg. C
d) ambient - about 30 - 32 deg C

I'm pretty happy with the esc so far. However, some minor problems with the motor mesh as a result of all the hard landings.

blue locktight is your best friend!!

Hi mxracer,

Thanks for that. I already had them on the pinion grub but I really try to avoid them at the motor mount into the motor.

How's Perth, my favourite city in Australia ? Weather getting better ? Got to try out the tracks there sometime in the future.

I mod that was done was the BrianG mod.

Removed a few components related to the BEC & used a UBEC to power the MMM. Also removed the fan power supply & use the UBEC to power the fan.

I have 2 working V2's still. The one with the most hours on it (several weekend worth) is one that the fan connector broke off of the first day. I cut the "grill" section out above the fan so the blades could not catch on it & wired the fan to the RX. This V2 has performed flawlessly since I did the mods after the first day. My set-up is 5S, Neu 1512 3d/f,RC8 18/46 gear. The other one only has a couple of hours on it. It still is using the stock fan & connector but I cut the grill out of it. I also carved some clearance in the case around the connector & but I'm thinking of busting the connector off the board on purpose. On both V2's I have put shrink tubing on the big plug sockets to keep them from shorting on the heat sink. I did have 2 earlier V2's fail but they were not modified (failed on the same set-up).

Thanks for the invite. It would b good to bring my rc there. I go back there about once a year & do intend to move back eventually. My brother has settled there while my sister has moved on to Sydney.

It's good to hear that the V2 are starting to become more stable like what u have. Personally, I think the MMM is a solid controller let down by some auxiliary bits. However, those bits are user repairable.

On with the torture...I mean testing :whip::mdr:

Disaster !

I had my modded V2 die on me on Saturday. I was running as usual & it just stopped after the double jump. There was no LED & tone. No response when connected to the link either. Sad day

On the other hand, V1 in the buggy still going strong. Depleted another pack on Saturday.

How much for an out of warranty repair ?

Regards,
Joe Ling

PS : took revenge by running running all nitro on Sunday

TruckBasher 10.13.2008 08:01 AM

I believe USD70...I am about to send 2 of my V2 myself....

joeling 10.18.2008 09:45 PM

Hi TruckBasher,

I'm really bad at sending stuff in for fixing but I think I may be building up steam to have some stuff sent soon (target 1 month he he). I have a sidewinder that cannot see the PC & now a dead V2. I also have a dead Tekno neu that Impakt said to have it sent in but I was just too lazy...

Anyway, went to the track again yesterday to run the V1 for probably half a pack & all was well save for the 3racing fan that I had just installed. I think it last only for 1 run. I noticed that it was not working prior to the session but ran the buggy anyway. Forgot to take temps. though.

Joe Ling

TruckBasher 10.19.2008 12:18 AM

Joe, Same here, I have the 2 MMM boxed, labeled and waiting to be sent of to post office.

You have one strong V1. I think there is only a few guys now running on them but there are still V1 out there.

joeling 11.09.2008 12:26 PM

Ok, this is likely to be my last update. The V1 has finally also given up the ghost. In both cases, I think the vibration killed the escs. For the second time, I forgot to replace the zip tie holding the esc down. As a result, it became dislodged from the case & probably sustained some damage while the buggy jumped & jumped & tumbled & did all the rough stuff.

I will be sending in the damaged esc soon (I hope). In the meantime, how does one get a V3 ? I have only 2 more left & I have 3 vehicles...

Regards,
Joe Ling
