Moding a Walmart "ride-on"?? (battery powered trucks for little kids)

Hi! New here. Guy on the UE boards sent me over here.
Heres my question.

My little brother and sister both have little trucks kind of like this one.

http://i.walmart.com/i/p/00/02/70/84...53_500X500.jpg

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...%3A4198%3A5353

They never play with them anymore, so I was thinking of trying to mod one. I'm really not sure what I could do to it, I haven't even really look it over yet. But I know I'd like to make it faster, but I don't know what kind of engine I could use, or battery.
I was thinking of maybe adding some rubber to the tires for better grip, but I think that would run the battery down real fast.
And I don't think I can make it much lighter.

Anyone have an Idea? I'm sure someone here knows something about electric motors.

Maybe once I do this they'll start using them again, They've been sitting for about a year.

Now. I've been told these use the same size motor as we use in RC. Could you tell me what would be a good size to use, or just what motor would do the job. and please give a link.

Is there anything else that I would need? other then the motor? like better batteries, or something?

Thanks.:D

Welcome to the forums. Here is another thread on converting Power Wheels . If there is a group of people that can help you get this done, this is the place. Good luck, and have fun!

Dafni 11.10.2005 07:46 AM

Yeah, welcome to the Forum!

I'm sure this is doable. At least you'll have plenty of room for cells ;)

How about a dual Lehner 22 setup? But you better get some seat-belts:D

coolhandcountry 11.10.2005 08:22 AM

Do you need dual motors or a single? A lehner 3080 would push the truck around pretty good. may need helmets though for kids.
Welcome to the forum there hush.

Papa 11.10.2005 08:45 AM

I am certain my sons Tonka power wheels has dual 540 Mabuchi brushed motors. It receives power from a single 6 volt cell, and it looks like a mechanical speed control. Each wheel is driven and geared individualy.

For experimental puposes, wiring in a second six volt cell in series may give you an inexpensive boost in power. Although, I am uncertain if the Speed control could manage the added voltage.

For Example: The neighbor kid has a Harley Power wheels it has two 6volts and one 540 can. It is faster in speed runs. However, that thing will wheelie from a start at full wood in first gear. My kid has to wear his bike helmet. The other day they roped the two together for a pull off. The Tonka beat the Harley. Of course my kid is about 20 lbs. heavier and was able to put the power to the sidewalk with a little more authority. The other boys wheels just spun.
:L:

I'll take another peak at the both after school today, in the name of science of course.

Serum 11.10.2005 02:14 PM

Did you say Tonka Papa!?

Papa 11.10.2005 03:50 PM

Yes indeed, I did say Tonka, you know a little yellow dump truck. Comes in handy when he picks the weeds in the garden.:L:

Dafni 11.10.2005 04:11 PM

Don't mention Tonka trucks to Serum. He tends to get "nostalgic"

:L:

nbcaznmaster 11.10.2005 04:16 PM

Here, my mother found back my 25 year old Tonka! she brought it allong a week ago.

I guess i was pretty carefull with it..

nbcaznmaster 11.10.2005 05:39 PM

lol, shouldn't that tonka be considered an antique by now?

coolhandcountry 11.10.2005 05:40 PM

you didn't even put a nick in the paint. Did you play with it?
If it runs the 540 can motors. and only runs 12 volts. can you put like a evx in it. Or one of them shulze with the 3oo amp compacity for brushed.

Hush 11.10.2005 05:44 PM

You guys have any links to these motors?

Great info so far, thanks alot.

nbcaznmaster 11.10.2005 05:48 PM

dang 500amps? hmm, get like a motor that is 1/2 foot tall and a foot long with 100hp!
Shove this into it!! item # 7560124581

And what site should I look for that on?

squeeforever 11.10.2005 07:57 PM

ebay but the auction ended.

coolhandcountry 11.10.2005 07:57 PM

I think that was an ebay item. Do you need one motor or two to mod this project? Brushless would kick some serious butt. Are you going to run the battery that is in it as well. If so does it have one or two. Could you squeeze three 6v batteries in it?

Papa 11.10.2005 08:06 PM

I just had my sons power wheel apart. The power pedal appears to be not much more than an on off switch. It has three wires leading to a forward reverse switch. I think the F/R just changes the + - connections to make the motrs run other way.

Whats wrong Serum, are you having Flasbacks to you child hood.

Did I tell you about the time, a long long time ago... I had mine on the beach and the tide came in.:L:

coolhandcountry 11.10.2005 08:23 PM

So another gas pedal will be in order or run brushed. Could you squeeze some dewalt motors on it or 775 cordites.

Papa 11.10.2005 08:25 PM

Tons of room for motors and cells

Hush 11.10.2005 08:37 PM

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's how it works too. Sadly.

I'd like to do this, but my mom isn't too keen on the idea of me tinkering with the kids toys.:M:

coolhandcountry 11.10.2005 08:43 PM

That is cool. Plenty of room for motors and cells. What a bout a gas pedal? Could we do brushless?

Papa 11.10.2005 08:43 PM

My boy is eight. I think we may give these or maybe these a try next. We have been to the track a few times and watched the races. Seems like a lot of fun. What do you think Momma will have to say about that?[

squeeforever 11.10.2005 09:06 PM

the phantom chassis are really good as well as the cyotte.

nbcaznmaster 11.10.2005 09:09 PM

What a great way to bring the family together. Apparently they start the kids out at around 5 yrs in the kid carts. Hell, I thought we'd pick up two one for me and one for the boy. Talk about being a pit Dad. :L: Mom could do a bit of wrenching, timing laps, feeding the crew etc....:L: Uh... you may want to leave that part out.

nbcaznmaster 11.10.2005 09:28 PM

nothing better to bring the family togehter! screw family game night!! FAMILY RACE NIGHT is much better!

coolhandcountry 11.10.2005 09:38 PM

That would be cool papa. You said feed the crew. Can I be part of the crew. :D I don't eat much. :D Half a cow for lunch should hold me to dinner.
