Looking for my first "Real Vehicle"

Yep, Ive decided to start searching for a vehicle. Ive been tinkering with my parents cars for the longest of times and now its time to get somthing of my own. Im looking for something V6 or V8, 3L-7L, car or truck with a max price of $1000. Its a very low budget I know but since gas is so high right now and the economy is so poor everyone is selling for dirt.

A guy locally is selling this jeep for cheap...

http://appleton.craigslist.org/cto/802448526.html

And heres a Conversion van...

http://appleton.craigslist.org/cto/802277332.html

I know gas is high and its not smart to buy a v8 or an inefficient car/truck but that doesnt bother me. Im High School and their is nothing else to pay for but gas and insurance.

So what do you guys think?

BrianG 09.26.2008 11:18 PM

The van would be my choice for a bachelor. One good thing about a cheap car is that if you buy it outright (no loan) you only need liability insurance (actually, having collision/comprehensive is not worth it). To help with gas prices, but a BL-assisted system on there for take-offs/acceleration.

jayjay283 09.26.2008 11:29 PM

Glad to see they still sell cars that cheap aroun here LOL, Wife might have to be giving back the comany car and didnt account for that, That jeep is nice I have 1 like it sitting in my driveway I got in a trade, 4.0 (i think) but its an inline 6 (that didnt specify), the wrench heads around here said thats the motor to get, will run forever and easy to fix, always cheap jeep parts. But that van is the pimp mobile and crash pad in 1.

BrianG 09.26.2008 11:38 PM

Yup, and the crash pad is nice if you go out drinking with the guys since you don't technically need to drive home to get to bed.

t-maxxracer32 09.27.2008 12:09 AM

takedown you havent thought about putting 1k for a down payment and get a newer car that will be more reliable?

couple of my freinds went your route and bought a cheaper car, but in the end put double the money into it just to keep it running.

in my opinion if you go with something nice now you will save yourself time and money.

if you can find a good reliable car though for 1k then more power to ya

jayjay283 09.27.2008 12:38 AM

Paying interest to the man blows. I assume your young if its your 1st car, buy it outright, dont get bogged down with payments. It does help build your credit, but anyone will give you credit on anything these days. I buy all my cars outright. If I have to save up 30g while driving an 8g truck, thats what I do (did) then I get what I want. Its mine, no one can take it. I can sleep in it forever if I want lol..JMO

t-maxxracer32 09.27.2008 02:04 AM

there are so many commericals going on right now about 0%apr for the first 3 years around here so i figured it was a nation wide thing for car companies.

i understand what you are saying jay. interest will eff you up, but if you do it smart then it shouldnt matter.

entjoles 09.27.2008 03:08 AM

for the price the van is your best bet , as it has low miles:rules:

i drive a 95 jeep g.c. v8 and it has 154000 miles on it and runs like a champ, i would prefer the jeep personally over the van , + its 4wd (WI) and the van is rear wheel, but the van is less miles for your money:yes:

I think youll spend more than a grand a week on fuel lol. I drive a 1.3L 4cyl and I pay $80/wk just to get around. maybe its cheaper for you guys *shrugs* but if i was in a 7l v8 truck id be well into $200-300 a week. I'd prefer a new rc car each week than a dribble of fuel to get me to uni and back.

you need to have very good credit for 0% Issac score of at least 750 some times as high as 820.....but I agree with buying a better car being cheaper in the long run...I still have a 97 Honda Accord that has 250k miles on it and runs like a top...I fill the tank about once every 3 weeks....my work is less than 10 miles from home

Takedown 09.27.2008 08:37 AM

Ya, gas milage doesnt bother me right now. It will be my car for High School and once I get out I'll be selling it for a fuel saver. Ive found alot more deals to...

I love old diesels. Get the 'burban!

E-Revonut 09.27.2008 10:36 AM

Go for thr Taurus SHO! Nice car and pretty quick for a grocery getter and they get decent MPG

TexasSP 09.27.2008 10:45 AM

When I was a teenager one of my friends had a conversion van and it was the best vehicle out of any of us (including others who had sports cars). It could handle plenty of people, was the ultimate party mobile, and always had room.

Plus like BrianG said, there is always a place to sleep, no need to drive anywhere.

Takedown 09.27.2008 10:49 AM

Ya I hear their pretty quick.

I bought a '72 F100 to get my through when my Jeep is down. I love the truck, but gas is horrible. If I were you, I'd get a 4cyl and be happy to get good gas mileage.

Toyota trucks are great buys and last forever. My first 4wd was an '83 Toy 4x4. Can't go wrong with Toyota!

jayjay283 09.28.2008 05:33 AM

yeah good point, want a reliable cheap rust bucket get a toyota made from 1982ish to 1988ish with that motor they put in most of them, the celica gt included, something like a tr33 ? Thing lasted me 150k miles bought used at 150k miles. people still rave about them. Oil companys probably bought the patent they lasted so long

BL_RV0 09.28.2008 10:27 AM

The name of the motor is a 22RE. My dad has a 1984 landcruiser BJ60 with a 3B diesel motor. He also has a 1984 SR5 pickup, with the almighty 22RE. The BJ60 has about 520,000 kilos, and the SR5 has about 280,000 miles.

Dude - if that thing just happens to be a diesel, run (dont walk!) down here and buy it.
#1: ANY 4WD, ANY Condition is worth 1500.
#2: If you dont want it, pm me and I'll tell you where to list it for sale at. You could easily make a couple grand....if its diesel.

Otherwise, that 74 chevy looks to me like the best bet on longevity, easy to work on, and should have decent resale. I personnally know of two of those that I rode in when I was in high school (80's) that are still running on the orginal motors/trannies. If you are good mechanically, I'd go for one of the older pickups (or the Jeep) that you can work on, fix your self, and learn on. I bought my first car out of a junk yard with no motor/tranny/interior and built it myself.

I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. Early model trucks are so easy to work on it's ridiculous and none of the parts short of a new engine or tranny are expensive. It will teach a lot mechanically and give you a better appreciation for your vehicle.

I owned an 1979 F100 Lariat with a 351 and ling bed that I wished I had never sold. Water pump went out, fixed in 1 hour and cost me about $15.00, then the master cylinder went out, took about 1-2 hours and cost me about $20.00. The most expensive thing I did was put four new tires on it. I also replaced the plugs and cables and a few other things. From purchase price to repairs I think I had about 1500 invested and it ran like a top. If I ever find one like it again for a good deal I will buy it.

Was that an M motor in that? That was a really popular truck series in the farming community, but they were notorious for dropping the valves at 40K like clockwork. Even the folks in town that had them lost their valves at that timeframe, so it was definitley not use related.

TexasSP 09.29.2008 09:58 AM

I don't know for sure on the motor as it was 10 years ago but I never had any issues. I got it from a guy that used it rarely and only for hauling off debris and odds and ends. The body was rough because it sat uncovered under a tree for all its years with him but other than that it was fine. I believe it had around 60k miles when I bought it and the motor always ran well. I had some initial timing issues with it but some friends at the Nashville Auto/Diesel College straightened that out for me.
