I’ve been hacked!...

Just and FYI team, I closed out my PayPal, credit cards and banks accounts yesterday.. I’ll open them up somewhere new in the next few days with all new numbers.

:grrrrrr: I found out early yesterday that I put down payment on home in Iawa, I'm a co-signer on a auto loan in Florida, and I recently purchased over 7,500 in jewelry. ????????? WTF… :diablo: :slap:

I'm of course working with the police and credit agencies in a desperate attempt to keep my credit I’ve worked so hard to establish.

I’ve always thought I was extremely carful, AAAAHHHHHaa…. :diablo:

Sorry feel much better now..

Thanks for letting me vent..

Have a great day and watch you information..

Arct1k 10.10.2008 11:28 AM

Send your car around when you get an address!

TDC57 10.10.2008 11:33 AM

LOLLOLLOL

Thanks for the laugh Chris

TDC57 10.10.2008 11:36 AM

I'm sorry guy’s this a VENT and FYI warring to you all.. please watch you stuff and I should have been checking my own credit history. NOT that this is my fault, but I could have know sooner if I was more diligent..

So FYI..

brushlessboy16 10.10.2008 11:38 AM

keep the xrays safe, send them too me :D

jayjay283 10.10.2008 11:46 AM

Sorry Bro, that blows, I hope and pray it doesnt happen to me, .. Guess thats where the annoying free credit .com commercials come in. Not insinuating its your fault as we should be able to trust, but you buy alot of random stuff online. I only do online transactions with people or institutions I can trust not to rub it in. But ya know Monster Mikes addy is on the package and tower hobbies is 45 minutes away and life is good, a few beers and a some wd 40, I wouldnt mess with me

TDC57 10.10.2008 11:49 AM

It was my fault, it's my credit and I never checked it!, I buy tons of stuff online from all over the world. But I'm also told that it's a simple as leaving a gas receipt at the pump as well.. At least it's Friday and I'm going to Venice beach this afternoon to see some old buddies and party hard tonight.. OOOO my head will hurt tomorrow LOL.LOL

Have a great day / weekend

P.S.
I'm posting the battle truck Vid this weekend

it's in it's editing phase

woah, not fun... same thing happened to me once, but in smaller scale. UPS sent me a huge bill for shipping an air conditioning unit between 2 cities in texas... these people can really get ur info from anywhere... the easiest way for someone to steal your information is through a wireless network. so make sure you keep it password protected. Currently, the best way to do that is to keep it secured with WPA-PSK password that cant be found in any dictionary, or wire up your whole house, and get rid of wireless. This is coming from a guy who knows a whole lot about computer security and how to bypass it. Its easy enough for someone like me to steal the information you lost in under 2 minutes if you dont keep your stuff secure. Don't save your credit card information on a website. Enter it every time. also, that little check box that says save my password? never click that. it just makes it even easier for a hacker to get ahold of your information. you can never be safe online, even with all the security stuff in the world. dont believe me? watch this... http://www.offensive-security.com/mo...bt3teaser.html

As George Carlin would say: It wouldn't hurt to think like a serial killer from time to time

EDIT: not to confuse anyone, I did not steal TDC57's identity, nor do I do it for a living or fun. You don't have to fear me, because I won't do that kind of stuff to people. You just have to worry about the unethical people that will try to steal your identity

bl-is-future 10.10.2008 12:55 PM

Lucky for me i have only ever had my paypal account hacked and i caught it instantly so no damage was done. I wish you luck in getting things straightened out. Love and hate the internet.

TruckBasher 10.10.2008 01:16 PM

That sucks Shaun, it happened to me when I purchased a domain name. a 3rd party service informed me that I bought that service in conjunction to the domain name. Good thing I saw it immediately. My bank did provide me with a new credit card with a new number...ohh and they refund me right away...

Hope things will work out well...enjoy the beach...

BrianG 10.10.2008 01:21 PM

Man, that sucks!

I can see at least three ways this happened:

- Careless web security
Click jacking, cross-site scripting, SQL injection, etc are all ways hackers can get people's data by hacking a bank or online forms. Gotta make sure the company you deal with is up to date on their security.

- Identity theft via carelessness
You could have left something somewhere that contained enough personal info for someone to steal Or, a company you dealt with in the past somehow had their database compromised, inadvendently exposed sensitive data to the general public, lost account info in a computer, etc.

- True hacking
Generally, hackers are lazy; they will do the least of amount of work to reach their goals. If you had an unsecure network or something, you are more likely to be targeted.
NEVER do ANY kind of account activity over a wireless connection. PERIOD. MAC addresses can be spoofed. WEP (even 128 bit encryption) can take as little as ~40 minutes to crack. WPA (and WPA2) can be cracked as well, just takes a little longer. Even VPNs are not foolproof. Wired connections aren't perfect either, but at least it limits hack attempts to those physically connected to a network rather than just scanning RF waves from a van across the street. I don't claim to know how to do this, but I do know it's very possible.

No matter what, it's a scary thought. I wish you well on this...

bl-is-future 10.10.2008 01:29 PM

i personally do know how to do this kind of stuff. See hackers that are so called elite work for the company they hacked. People like me that just know how to do it go to jail. I DO NOT do this because of that. It is wrong and just plain stupid. treat others how you want to be treated. All i do know is that is does not take hardly any effort to get this information to steal your identity. It doesn't matter how secure you think you are it can happen and not that it is your fault it just happens. AGAIN I DO NOT DO THIS KIND OF ACTIVITY. I only know how because i recently took a course at my college called ethical hacking. Yeah nice to hear that isn't it.

40 minutes? try 40 seconds... its incredibly easy to crack WEP, and all WEP keys can be cracked in under 5 minutes now. WPA2 is much harder, and it needs a dictionary attack to be of any use

Arct1k 10.10.2008 01:30 PM

Is the home in Iawa nice - perhaps you can get the down payment back....

Andrew32 10.10.2008 01:33 PM

i know exactly how you feel. Im 19 and iv been hacked 3 times. (no im not dumb, someone just sold my identity 3 times)

1. apparently i bought $6000 im DB and Gucci bags (parents outa town too)
2. apparently i spent $2000 while i was taking SAT's
3. apparently i opened up a sprint line and got a $600 bill.

You gotta watch cashiers that scan your card. Police told me the dude had a second card reader under the real one to grab all my info.:no:

GAY

jayjay283 10.10.2008 01:36 PM

Its cracked man.... hacked these days, whole new story

TruckBasher 10.10.2008 01:37 PM

I do agree that hackers are lazy but I doubt that they will do all the trouble of hacking your wireless network just to get your credit card transaction. Unless they targeted and they know you have a big credit balance. Not to mentioned that it will take a high end spec computer to actually crack the WPA.....not that im saying its impossible it can be done but it will take more than an average guy to do it, so its not worth it....

I think this is more likely caused by the sites having an unsecured session on credit transaction....and for paypal there are a lot of email spam that will force you to login to their site thinking it was paypal but its actually a hack site....

So lesson for the say, know the site that we buy from and make sure the site is what we think it is :intello:

TDC57 10.10.2008 01:39 PM

OMG… I just received a call from the wife apparently, we just received word from Well Fargo that someone was trying to transfer founds from my checking account… @!*^% …

Good thing I closed the account yesterday!.. What a frincken pain in the ass.. I need a drink and smoke..

I like the information on the a wireless network stuff and of course BrianG.. , I have a system that kind of feeds the neighbors / my coldasack not anymore..

Sorry for venting..

I hope this never happens to anyone else.. PLEASE watch you ID..

rootar 10.10.2008 02:14 PM

i actually use the free creditreport.com, it aint free either its 13-14 dollars a month and it will tell me everytime someone checks my credit or if anything changes, i have been using it for about a year now i about 2 months ago some bank from indiana ran a credit check on me and i got an email 2hours after they did it so i called the bank and asked why they checked my credit, and someone had tried to use my info to get a loan..... id say its worth looking into, they also have the LIFE lock which is what my father uses and its pretty sweet.

rc!!! 10.10.2008 03:44 PM

lol, ill be more carful now lol, i have never bought any thing off the internet but i should be making a large order soon, so thinks 4 the heads up! :D

magman 10.10.2008 04:27 PM

First, I am sorry for what happened to you. Internet theft is a cronic problem that will be hard to ever slow down. I purchase from vendors who will take money orders as well as ccards and ONLY use money orders...I am limited as to whom I do business with, but, the less I have my info out there, the better. I won't even pay bills on line.

I have only 1 ccard so it is easy to keep track of. If something like what happened to you happened to me...I would lose my house!

kraegar 10.10.2008 04:40 PM

Grabbing your info from your wireless network is extremely unlikely. What are the odds someone's sitting outside your place, recording your traffic, at the exact time you placed an order on a website not using SSL (https)?

Better odds are that someone you purchased from was broken into - either their website was compromised, or they were just plain dumb (through records in the trash, etc)... or that even your bank, or a bank who's ATM you used was compromised. (A local bank to my area was recently compromised, lots of people who used their ATMs now have some interesting credit issues).

Basically, anyone trying to do this kind of thing isn't looking to get one guy's info to the point they'll sit in a car & crack wep/wpa keys. The go for targets that net them hundreds or more accounts at a time. And those are the ones that are more difficult to protect yourself from.

Things you can do:

Always use sites with good, current & valid SSL certs (look for the lock icon, actually look at the cert & make sure it matches who you think you're buying from).
Use a up to date, fairly secure web browser:
Use Firefox.
Use the NoScript Addon.
Use the Adblock & Filterset.G addons.

Use good anti-virus (I use avast, it's free)
Use a good anti-spyware program (I use spybot search & destroy)
Get an account at FreeCreditReport.com or a similar site (several options, but they have pirates in their ads, so they're cooler)

If someone was getting loans in your name, they had more then a credit card #.

Best of luck in straightening it all out!

- Tony

the deal with mine is there info didnt match the credit check and the bank called the cops on them, this happens alot to alot of people, i dont mind paying 50 cents a day to know that nobody can screw me over with my credit or steal my identity. the freecredit report does alot more than just monitor your cedit score and who is looking at, it even shows your outstanding loans, payments.

TexasSP 10.10.2008 05:21 PM

Things like freecreditreport.com are okay, but don't do much other than send alerts. I used them for a while but they still miss a lot. You are better getting with one of the insurance/protection groups. These guys do a lot more than monitor, they insure you against loss and clean up the public information about you that is most easily accessed. One major bonus is that this stops most of the unsolicited credit offers you get via mail or phone.

Here is a good example of a total ID theft prevention company, albeit there ar emany others:

This sucks man I feel your pain.

Bank of America caught some trash trying to buy some plane tickets with my account one time a while back.

They thought someone jacked my CC info in a store like someone else mentioned above.

Here check it out here's my sign on password and user-name at the Bank of America....IPfr33ley, Blowm3

George16 10.10.2008 07:14 PM

I'm glad you got it sorted out right away.

The Navy finally realized the magnitude of identity theft so they got rid of the SSNs' on military IDs.

Snipin_Willy 10.10.2008 10:52 PM

I fall under this as well.
I've had my bank account info stolen and the someones made over-sea's withdraws out of my account (they had my debit/credit card) until it was way over drawn. Only took me about 6 hours from the time it started to the time I nearly shat myself in the bank office when I went and found out what happened. Good bank though. Froze my account, flagged my credit as stolen identity, and I was fully reimbursed for all my loses. Took several weeks to get things turned around.

A guy I work with has a company credit card because he travels all the time and it's what he uses to buy his airline tickets. That number got stolen and the perp decided to buy some things at walmart =/

jordan... 10.10.2008 11:29 PM

Hey Shaun, I haven't had any experience like this, but i hate to hear it happening to anyone on these forums, especially you :surprised: Hope everything gets sorted out real quick
