Losi 8t Tekno V3 build process pics

so i got most of my ordered parts yesterday and started the build today. i have a couple of other parts coming thursday so i should be able to finish in time for the weekend races.

i am going all out on this one. this is basically the same setup as my 8 buggy but this time i wont be going off trial and error. here are the hop up/conversion parts:

Tekno Rc V3 electric conversion
Neu 1512 1.5D/F
MMM modified
5s Thunder Power V2 lipo 5000mah
Lunsford titanium screw kit for losi 8t
Lunsford ti. turnbuckle and hingepin kit
Lunsford ti. king pins
Acer racing ceramic nitride bearing kit for losi8t
Tekno 13t long shank pinion
Fioroni Tractive IV front and rear diff
RobinsonRacing wide/hardened spur for center diff with lightened outdrives from Losi
Losi front/rear alum chassis braces
Losi alum spindle carriers
Losi alum front spindles
Fioroni rear alum hubs
Fioroni lightweight driveshaft axles
Fioroni lightweight pinion couplers
Fioroni "grip" wheel nut
Xtreme Racing carbon fiber front/rear shock towers
Xtreme Racing carbon fiber disc brakes
Xtreme Racing carbon fiber mud guards
King Headz alum top plate
high downforce rear wing
JConcepts rulux half ups LPR wheels
Proline holeshot LPR tires
10 ga wire throughout
lead free silver/tin solder
JR Z9100s servos for brake/steering
Spektrum DSM2 3 channel rec. 3100
Losi alum servo saver
Dragon Racing (ebay) hardened driveshafts front/rear/center
losi brake springs
dynamite brake linkage kit

Though i have added weight with alum. parts in a couple of places i wanted that extra strenght plus i have saved weight with titanium parts/screws instead of steel and also with the lightweight pieces from fioroni and others. the acer bearings are lighter than stock. the ti. screw kit cuts out about 3-4 ounces.

here is what i have done to my MMMs that seems to be working. at least so far they have performed flawlessly when i have done this. i take out the fan and put in my own that runs off the battery reciever terminal. i also take out the switch and put in a toggle switch. both tricks i learned on this forum. :mdr: i have had 2 MMMs that had failed switches. not anymore.

take off ESC top
<a href="http://s471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/?action=view&current=DSC00360.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/DSC00360.jpg" border="0" alt="MMM mod1"></a>

remove fan

cut out top of ESC casing
<a href="http://s471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/?action=view&current=DSC00363.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/DSC00363.jpg" border="0" alt="MMM mod3"></a>

<a href="http://s471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/?action=view&current=DSC00364.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/DSC00364.jpg" border="0" alt="MMM mod4"></a>

radio shack toggle switch
<a href="http://s471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/?action=view&current=DSC00369.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/DSC00369.jpg" border="0" alt="toggle2"></a>

finished product. a working MMM.....knock on wood.
<a href="http://s471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/?action=view&current=DSC00370.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/DSC00370.jpg" border="0" alt="tekno radio deck"></a>

i will add more pics as the build continues. the finished product should be a sweet setup. i especially cant wait to run the 1512 1.5D on the 5s LIPO. i will get some video of its virgin run and post it here.

rootar 10.15.2008 07:51 AM

nice build list you got there...cant wait to see more pics, and also that a clean looking fan mod on the MMM.

brushlessboy16 10.15.2008 08:03 AM

Looks good so far :D. have you ever used teh Tractive diffs in the Center? how do they do in Front and Rear?

BL_RV0 10.15.2008 08:32 AM

:gasp: You must have shelled out some dough to build that one!! So you're running a 1512 on it? Don't you think its too small?

yeah, i have a Fioroni center diff on my buggy but it cogs a lot for some reason so i have put the stock one back in. i am going to try it again but for now i am holding off on the center diff on the truggy. but the front and rear Fioroni diffs in my buggy perform great. i actually havent compared them to stock but my buggy far outperforms the others at the track. but there are more variables than just the diffs like conversion kits, motor, etc. spending a little extra for better quality goes a long way. from what i understand the Tractive IV diffs put the rubber to the road on all fours better than the stock diffs.

yeah, i told my wife that i spent $100. if she really knew she would shit her panties. haha. it never ends.

i have a 1512 1.5d and a 1515 1.5D. i am not sure which one i will run yet but i had the 1512 in my buggy and then threw in the 1515 and the 1512 is a lot faster. that is on a 4s too. so what i am thinking is i am going to throw the 1512 back in the buggy on 4s and throw the 1515 into the truggy on 5s. that puts both motors right at 50k rpm. i just want to try the 1512 on 5s once. that will be 62k rpm. and no, it is not too small. these motors rip. look at my other thread about 4s and 5s on neu motors. there are a lot of posts there from guys that use the 1512 for their revos and truggies and they are fast from what it sounds like.

BL_RV0 10.15.2008 10:13 AM

True, but seems like temps would get out of hand with that setup. The 1515 1.5d on 4s is your best bet.
Do you have interference problems with the RX next to the ESC?

jnev 10.15.2008 06:23 PM

Very nice truggy! Your builds are starting to remind me of the ones TDC does... you both seem to like to go all out on your trucks. Very clean conversion as well... looks pretty much factory.

cembom 10.15.2008 07:46 PM

Yeah if she only knew that ONE of those servos was about that lmao, would suck too be you.....

DRIFT_BUGGY 10.15.2008 08:58 PM

Far out, alot of money spent there. Coming along very nice. Pics are excellent quality to. Be sure to post up more pics

thanks. your fleet looks sweet! send me some links to pics of TDC's stuff if you have some. i have seen his crawlser which looks very nice but would love to see his other stuff.

check out this conversion. http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6281
probably the best custom brushless conversion i have seen. it was this that led me to this forum and compelled me to join. i would love to have this ride or build one like it. i have a schumacher 1/8 scale on road coming in the mail that i will be turning into a brushless speed demon. i will be going for speeds of 100mph. i will be sure to do a post on that one and i am sure i will need a lot of help from the forum when i start that one.

wow, those builds are insane! thanks for sharing those. did you see serums 1/8 BL Serpent? i think i am far from being worthy to be compared to TDC's builds but maybe someday. i havent been able to do much cuz i am still waiting for my titanium screw kit. should be here tomorrow. i wish mike would have got those MGMs a couple of days sooner before i bought the MMM. oh well.

here are a couple of pics currently. i decide to throw the 1512 1.5d back in the buggy on 4s and i put the 1515 1.5d in this truggy on 5s. these new thunder power extreme V2 batteries kick ass. my buggy was doing about 60 last night with the 4s. anyway, hope to finish the thing this weekend.

i sent the body to florida for a guy to custom paint the true fire green flames. that is one thing i cant do for sure. i have found some pretty good lessons on youtube on how to paint the true flames but this is one build i dont have the patience to try and learn it right now.

a few more pics. just trying to do whatever i can despite not having my screw kit yet.
<a href="http://s471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/?action=view&current=DSC00404.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/DSC00404.jpg" border="0" alt="lunsford turnbuckle"></a>

here's a few pics of stock and hop up parts weighed in grams. you'd be surprized how much weight you can save with carbon fiber, titanium, and aluminum.

titanium turnbuckle on scale "zeroed out"
<a href="http://s471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/?action=view&current=DSC00408.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr77/ryujames/DSC00408.jpg" border="0" alt="lunsford turnbuckle2"></a>

stock turnbuckle is 6.8 grams heavier. about double the lunsford one

wow, i difference of over 30 grams. and this carbon fiber shocktower is way stronger than i thought it would be. it needed some modding though.

so my ti. screws just cam in this morn but i got sick of waiting and finished her over the weekend. here are some final pics without the body. i am waiting on a true fire shell. i will end up putting all the titanium screws in tonight. the pics kinda suck, too much light. but the thing is amazing to drive!:yipi: i will get some video tonight hopefully and post it. handles on a dime and screams at about 55-60mph. i was tearing up the neighborhood park last night. thanks Tekno RC!

WoW!!!

kulangflow 10.22.2008 10:57 AM

Is there any way to swap the positions of the esc and battery so your motor wires don't have to be so long?

Maybe they're thick enough that it doesn't matter, but I know wire length has been a big concern in the past with giving problems to brushless systems.

Just a thought anyway. That is a great looking vehicle. Highly impressive build!

i agree with you completely. there is a way it could be done but as it sits the truggy is perfectly balanced. i want to get this Mugen conversion for that specific reason. check out the pic at impaktrc. http://www.impaktrc.com/product_info...oducts_id=3521

this setup is ideal. you would only need a couple inches of wire from the batt, esc, and motor. however, it is not avail yet. impakt is taking pre-orders now and expect to have it in a couple of weeks. i may build one still just cuz i love the layout and plus i have heard great things about Mugen. but i couldnt wait to have a truggy so that is why i went with this losi setup for now. if they would have had the conversion for the Mugen available two weeks ago i would have built it. there are rolling chassis kits on ebay for under $500.

but now with the brushless revo i may have to just go with it and forget the Mugen. i love those brushless REvos!!! decisions, decisions.

stum 10.22.2008 07:51 PM

Here is another way to do the 8ight so you have better balance as well as a better location for the ESC and use a erevo, slash or emaxx water sealed radio box to avoid any 'electrical' issues from a wet race track :) In a couple days my V3 MMM will be here replacing that ESC on the perch.. but it is such a sweet layout iMO.

thanks Stumblinh!! that is exactly what i had in mind because i saw these pics of yours in your other thread. great idea. but i was only going to do it if i got the MGM speed control. it would have had to be mounted that way. however, despite the long wire, i like the MMM setup and it looks very clean and i have yet to have any problems resulting from the wire. i have 10 ga and 6% silver/lead free solder for high conductivity.

so you are getting your v3 from Castle, huh? thats great. i hope mine comes soon. i just had a v2 die on me a couple of days ago. i now have 3 that castle should replace. wonder what i am going to do with them all now that i have a couple of v2's that work?

A great job, ABSOLUTELY WELL DONE… I'm sorry I missed this post earlier I’ve been kind of busy (pre-occupied) with my Battle truck build. :oh: AKA the coolest RC toy know to mankind :lol::lol:.. Sorry I couldn’t resist

Have a great week and I'm looking forward to the Video of this one and any future builds you’re kind enough to share with us..

Shaun,

When is the next bash? It was fun last time I was out there, this time I will have my brushless arsenals ready (if the MMM v3 hold up till then).

hey man,
any videos of the battle truck posted yet? and yes, you have bragging rights. i dont think there is another battle truck in existence. it will be hard to one up that but maybe i can pull something together in the near future. your builds are my inspiration now.

so i got the shell back a couple of days ago.
turned out nice but i wish now i would have had some skulls painted on it with Halloween and all. coulda hid in the bushes and scared the shit out of some kids when they come knocking. chase them down the street....or just run them over seeing as kids cant run 60 mph.

speaking of, my friend came over tonight to show me his newly converted Losi 8T with the Losi conversion kit and the Novak HV 6.5 ESC and motor. i happened to be outside driving my truggy when he pulled up. after a few minutes i asked to see his truggy which he showed to me but refused to drive it cuz he said he was embarrassed at how much faster mine was. he said mine would kick his arse!! Gotta love those Neu motors. I told him all along. He is wishing he listened now. haha. I know you will read this Raney120. Join so you can defend yourself!

no offense but i think something on the front would make it look better - like an intercooler or vents or something - those effects look sick but imo its too much!

other than that - SWEET!!!!

you got some pics of something so i can get an idea? i kinda thought the same thing. just too much flames on the front end. need to mix it up a bit.

Looks great man. Nice build. I like the body too. But why are there nitro holes in it?

i could only find pre-cut bodies from losi. doesnt hurt to have a little air in there to keep the electronics cool though.

so i have a video as promised but i cant get it posted. its on one of those Sony mini dvd recorders. anyone know how to post that type of video online? photobucket doestn recognize the kind of file.

btw, my buddy has some new program on his iphone that tells you your 0-60 time. so we hooked his iphone to the truggy and sure enough, it hhit 60mph. unfortunately it doesnt register top speed so i dont know how fast exactly it is until i get a gps hooked up.

:smile:Nice selection of parts you've used to do your conversion, I bought a new 8T RR and converted it with the Tekno kit, none of the other spangly bits though but just by way of comparison here's how I mounted my esc

that looks great Gramey! thanks for sharing. that is exactly what i was thinking of doing if i got one of the MGM controllers but i couldnt wait for Mike to get them so went ahead and pickedup a MMM. now he has the MGMs though but also i have 3 v3 MMMs. anyway, post some more pics if you have them. i would love to see the whole setup, even it you dont have all the extras. just looks like a clean build and would love to see.

Where did you get the cube-style MGM?

gramey 11.05.2008 08:53 PM

:smile:I ordered it through my LHS here in the UK but you can order direct from the factory via the internet or I believe through RC Monster?
