Project: Battle Truck, MGT 8x8

Ok guys, I have a feeling you're going to like this one. I've got a MGT on it's way (parcel post... UGH!) So it should be here late next week, probably thursday or friday. It's already been converted to brushless using a KB45 motor. Although, I'll completely be stripping down this MGT and using it for parts. I'm also working out a deal for a complete MGT 4.6 roller. RTR without engine. Here's the plan: I'm going to remove the diffs and put 4 outrunners in their places, all rewound to ~180kv for operation on 3s each. Yeah, that's right... 4 motors, 4 esc's, 4 batts. Here's what i plan on running on each axle:

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...less_Outrunner

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...Simple_50A_ESC

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=6501

RX pack:
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=5552

Here's what I got for the operation:

Differential Ratio: 1
Transmission Ratio: 1
Other Ratio: 1
Spur Tooth Count: 1
Pinion Tooth Count: 1
Total Voltage: 11.1
Motor KV: 180
Tire Diameter (inches): 7
Tire Ballooning (inches): 0
Motor Current Draw: 0
Motor coil Ω: 0
Spur/Pinion Ratio: 1 : 1
Total Ratio: 1 : 1
Tire Circumference (inches): 21.99 inches (558.58 mm)
Total Motor Speed: 1998 RPM
Vehicle Speed: 41.61 mph (66.84 km/h)
Estimated Adjusted Speed: 39 mph (63 km/h) - 5% loss
Effective KV Value: 180
KT constant: 7.51 oz-in/A
Motor Torque: Amperage not specified...
Final Torque: Amperage not specified...
Final Power: Amperage not specified...

I think this will be a fun setup, to say the least. Input? Oh let me get to the firepower.
I was thinking one of these because it fires at a decent FPS, and holds a lot of ammo, as well as it looks like there is alot of plastic that can be removed.
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ct_id=10248640
Also, going to do a rotating rocket mechanism, mounted to the top of the cab. I'll get some pics when the first MGT gets here. If you have a complete rolling chassis MGT for trade for BL stuff shoot me a PM!!

Krawlin 10.17.2008 10:13 PM

Looks awesome dude, should be pretty crazy! Cant wait to see some pics of it!

BL_RV0 10.17.2008 10:15 PM

Thanx! Can't wait either.

TexasSP 10.17.2008 10:56 PM

You will need to take lots of pictures of this! How do yo plan to set up the wheels and the steering?

BL_RV0 10.17.2008 11:04 PM

The outrunner will (hopefully) directly replace the differential without too many issues/modifications. The motor shaft will come out both sides equally, and I'll probably have bearings supporting them. The shaft will mount into the CVD joint right where the differential shaft would've gone. Steering will not change at all from the stock setup.

Braking?

Should be a very interesting project indeed.

Reverse mounted ducted fan...

I would run a direct to diff setup with one outrunner for each pair of diffs. I assume you will run a steerable wheel setup at the front and rear, and have 4 wheels in the center close to each other. That way you could run a 6s compatible 4130 size outrunner (pair of them) and a pair of MMM's for full foward/reverse/ and brake.

This will be a heavy vehicle, but will require a minimum of fabrication. Just make a center piece that will attach the two trucks together via the skid plate area, with the back, non steerable wheels together. You will also need some sort of upper brace to tie the top of the bulks together, but flat stock should work fine. Steering could be handled with a simple y cable, as the steering wheels will have to turn opposite of each other to pivot around the fixed wheels in the center. Making decent motor mounts will be important, and supporting the non mount end of the outrunner with a bearing is a decent idea.

Braking, I was thinking just drag brakes set to 100% for each ESC. Thanks for the kudos.

No, I'm going to have 1 full MGT in the front, and then 2 axles behind it. I was going to use 2 outrunners, but I'm not sure if Mike could make the dogbones for me. I'm making the conversion all myself, because I'm getting a mill in a couple weeks (last year's xmas present from dad that hasn't been purchased yet...) Linc, what was that 1 servo-reversing y-cable that you used on your x-factor? I want one to use for the steering. I want to go HV on this project, because lutach gave the virus and now I can't go back. If I go with 2 outrunners, I was thinking something along the lines of these components:

Hope to see you tomorrow.. (I've got a six pac of soda with your name on it)

BL_RV0 10.18.2008 02:22 PM

Thanks!
I can't wait to see it come together. What's say we have a formal all-out battle at the november bash??? Weapons allowed, last truck standing wins! How's that sound? I'll try posting a random picture:

No dice. I had [IMG] tags around it and everything.. Weird.

Semi Pro 10.18.2008 09:19 PM

If you look at the bottom left of the page you will see the img code is off on this sub forum. Pm BrianG and see if he can switch it on...

At this point I have no idea whether I'm going with 2 motors or four. I'd *like* to do the 4 motor setup, but it'd be a lot cheaper to go with the 2 motor deal.

lincpimp 10.19.2008 12:53 AM

2 motors should be plenty...

Yeah, I decided 2 big motors will do the job better than 4 small(er) motors.

Is 2 huge outrunners on an 8x8 truck not enough to satisfy you?

What's with all the steel braided hose? I had to take out your image link because it says this post was over the legal limit.

Well what then?

What's_nitro? 10.20.2008 03:21 AM

I'm just messing with you man! I'm sure the two giant outrunners will give you an unquantifiable amount of power. :mdr:

BL_RV0 10.21.2008 09:14 AM

Hopefully. I'm getting my other MGT off of _paralyzed_ this week. Really looking forward to it!!

BL_RV0 10.24.2008 10:32 PM

Update

This is a big one guys!
I decided to only go with 6x6. It seems like 8x8 would just add weight and make it even more of a cumbersome hulk. :bad:
Here's the motor I'm thinking of getting (to run on 8s):
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=7870
3250w should push this beast! I decided I'll build a full roll cage and have al sheets protecting everything. Still deciding whether or not to do a flamethrower. This truck should be a iron pig, and based on the TSR 6x6 reviews it will be a great basher. I'm still debating if I should go with the TSR thru-diff case or attempt to build my own. I've got most of the stuff already, just order up the electronics, metal and whatever other parts I'll need and be on my way.

What's_nitro? 10.25.2008 02:59 AM

Dude... Sweet!!! :surprised:

BL_RV0 10.25.2008 08:45 PM

Yup. Can't wait to bash the f--- out of this thing.

TDC57 10.28.2008 01:20 AM

SOOOOOoooo let's SEE IT SIR ??? :intello:

Where is the new BEAST ??

BL_RV0 10.29.2008 09:49 AM

I got paralyzed's MGT yesterday. I immediately started disassembling it to clean it and replace broken parts. Needless to say, the nitro crap all over the truck was fun to get off, as you see a sort of shiny part under it. These pics aren't what you're hoping for, but they'll do until I have time to clean the whole truck, wait for my other one along with many, many parts (should be here today) and reassemble the truck. I found a bent shock shaft, 2 broken a-arms, a bent turnbuckle, and some broken titanium bumper support. I'll take the parts off of my spare axle I'm getting, and try and find a replacement for the bumper mount thing. It's usable as-is, but i don't like to have broken stuff on my truck. I'll get pics up in a sec.

BL_RV0 10.30.2008 10:26 PM

I'm trying to get pics up.... My freaking camera won't read the card.... :bad: :diablo:

What's_nitro? 10.31.2008 12:37 AM

That stinks. Isn't technology beautiful???

BL_RV0 10.31.2008 09:24 AM

No. I wish I could afford a decent camera. Mine is some old POS HP. 1.3 megapixels. I'd use my iPhone, but it takes terrible pictures anywhere but outside.

BL_RV0 11.02.2008 10:51 AM

Finally picked out components

Ok guys, lutach really helped me out picking the motor. He found the PERFECT one!!! (Other ones I picked were too big)
Here it is:
http://www.flydma.com/product_info.p...roducts_id=300
Because of the high KV, I'm going to run on 5s but with high mah batteries.
Going to get one of lutach's escs for this, not sure which one yet. I'll most likely get the 10s version because I will be going hv in the future.
For the batteries:
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=6502
2 of those in parallel. 8800mah. Woot!

Metallover 11.15.2008 07:39 PM

Any updates on this thing?

BL_RV0 11.15.2008 08:12 PM

Yes actually. A couple cell pics of current progress:

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1226794174.jpg

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1226794191.jpg

I will build the 3rd axle tomorrow. I still need to get my mill before I can finish the 6x6 conversion, but I can do everything else, so I'll probably leave it as 4x4 for a while until I get the mill.

TDC57 12.06.2008 12:18 AM

So how are you coming on your BAD ASS  any updates for the team

That third axle should be complete about now..

Fast5sRevo88 12.20.2008 07:56 PM

this Thread Is Useless Without Progress!!

What's_nitro? 12.20.2008 08:04 PM

I have a whole bunch of threads like that!!! Just give it time........

BL_RV0 12.21.2008 06:23 PM

I've decided to sell this project along with a bunch of other stuff, check out general discussion for the thread.
