Are they supposed to shoot flames?

Just got back from a late night bash with my buddy mike.. ran for about a half hour...

Then it gets ugly... im walking with the truck. just enough throttle to keep at a walking speed... esc starts to smoke... oh crap right? wrong.. as i approach it the speed controller lights up in a brilliant display of fire and smoke... so i run up and unplug the thing as the fan shoots flames on my hand (which is now singed. It was a dead short somewhere, drew enough amps to melt my deans together, burned my fingers getting them off.. it melted the plastic so i had exposed contacts...

so now that myself and the car are fuming, i come in here and check my batter.....
I have 4 cells that read 3.8v and one that reads 0.01 so i rip apart the pack, all my heatshrink to find a cell with a loose casing and 0 volts... right now i am furious... because this is my second speed controller dead, but i took my battery pack with it.... WHO PAYS FOR THIS!

edit- my receiver and servo are also dead now... AHHH

Now im in the hole by about 300 dollars... great

castle:neutral: that sucks man! was it a v2?

brushlessboy16 10.21.2008 09:41 PM

yes it was a v2

Sylvester 10.21.2008 09:43 PM

did it have the new update installed?

CRTIM 10.21.2008 09:44 PM

Had you updated the software yet??
...oops Sylvester beat me to it

brushlessboy16 10.21.2008 09:46 PM

when i checked at 6pm it was not out...

MetalMan 10.21.2008 09:50 PM

It should have been there when you checked - I updated my V2's firmware at 3pm PST, which was 6pm EST.

brushlessboy16 10.21.2008 09:52 PM

nope, i didnt get a notification so i hit "check for upates" and nothing came up..

MetalMan 10.21.2008 10:10 PM

My 3.05 Castle Link didn't report an update either, but I went to their website and got the update.

brushlessboy16 10.21.2008 10:16 PM

is that a firmware update for the esc or for the castle link itself?

brushlessboy16 10.21.2008 10:17 PM

AHHHH , plugged in the castle link to the esc, it heats up really fast... definately bad things inside that controller.

So how does drag racing as a hobby sound right now? Might want to go start reading warranty disclaimers on racing hop up parts.
Seriously, sorry to hear that - anyone of us might be the next to post something like this.

CastleLink is the computer software, and 3.12 contains the 1.20 firmware update for the MMM. The Castle Link USB device doesn't get updated.

Arct1k 10.21.2008 10:34 PM

Well you got a motor for free from CC and a loaner MMM from me so not all bad - this was always a risk... I've had three MM's die flaming deaths...

A couple of failures rained molten fets onto my Lipos and burnt holes through HS and plastic wrap right up to lipo sheath...

Tough luck never the same... Look on the bright side you now have a 4s lipo which is perfect for a 1Y and you won't have to wait 2 months for a v3.

CRTIM 10.21.2008 10:47 PM

after reading stuff like this I'm thinking i should just send in my new in box v2 and just get a new v3 and not take a chance of frying any of my other components ....i was gonna try and run it but i'm starting to think otherwise....can i send in a new unused unit or does it have to be a damaged v2 unit ??

I was thinking the same but the turn around will be bad . Do what i am doing , just download the new v3 firmware into your v2 and contact CC to send you out the new v3 case for free .

Arct1k 10.21.2008 10:58 PM

CC have said they will replace all V1 / V2 free working or not however they have a preference for obviously getting the broken ones fixed first...

Ill call today after school. hopefully its not a total loss for me..

I think the mmm is smarter than most perceive it to be. it knew that the v3 firmware was out, even though ben didnt, and when it couldnt take the fact that it wasnt the best anymore, it killed itself, but not without taking the neighbors with it.

brushlessboy16 10.22.2008 11:10 PM

i knewthe update was on its way out, it apparently came out about 15 minute after i tried to update...
