broken screw

I broke a screw and now its stuck in my flm hybrid bulk. Its one of the ones that goes through the chassis to the bulkhead. anyone got any ideas on getting it out?

Serum 11.23.2005 05:53 AM

Now, that can be a pitta... How deep is it in?

Perhaps you could use FLM's warrantee on this one?

Basketti 11.23.2005 06:10 AM

well i would say a good 5-7mm is stuck in the bulkhead, and it starts about 2mm from the top so i cant grab it with some pliers. I didnt use thread lock on it so if i could stick something on it it shouldnt take to much to get out. And what makes it worse is i've only ran my truck about 5 times with these on. i hope the warrentee covers it that would be great.

Serum 11.23.2005 06:22 AM

are they 2 mm out or in?

If they are out, you can use a thin dremel tool to make a cut and you can screw it out with a flat head screwdriver.

Basketti 11.23.2005 06:26 AM

Sorry I ment they are 2mm in.

nbcaznmaster 11.23.2005 07:31 AM

ouch, hate it when stuff like that happens.

dabid 11.23.2005 12:54 PM

You might still be able to do the Dremel trick, but it'd make a nasty mark on the surface.

nbcaznmaster 11.23.2005 01:44 PM

probbably would void teh warrenty too...

I might just run it like it is with 3 screws. it shouldnt make that much difference would it?

rchippie 11.24.2005 09:44 AM

If you dont think you can get the screw out, without messing up the bulk. You can take it to your local machine shop for a few bucks they can get it out without messing up the threads on the bulks.

Serum 11.24.2005 09:47 AM

Any idea how they do that Hippie?

coolhandcountry 11.24.2005 09:50 AM

Do they make a little bitty easy out for such a problem? What if you flip the bulk head over and put a small drill on it and drill from the under side. If it is not in tight the drill will unscrew it. Just a suggestion to try.

RC-Monster Mike 11.24.2005 10:47 AM

You need a small EZ out or extractor bit to get the screw out. No loctite makes it a much easier task, too!
It won't be terribly easy, though, because it is so small in diameter.
My guess is the "no loctite" caused the screw to break in the first place, actually! If the screw backed out while you were running, I could see it breaking pretty easy from an impact.

Very carefully :L: . They would be able to drill the screw exactly in the middle. Which would make it eaiser to get the screw exstractor a good grip. I f you cant cut a slot in the screw i would have a machine shop do it. Sinice the screw is so small.

Serum 11.24.2005 02:56 PM

Yeah, it's nearly 2.5 mm

Basketti 11.25.2005 01:06 AM

i just had a thought. What if a screw a screw in from underneath to push the broken one out? i just put my truck together so i dont want to do it now, do you think it will work?

coolhandcountry 11.25.2005 09:16 AM

that is a negative on working with the screw. It will only go against the other one and bind it in there.

Sylvester 11.25.2005 10:53 AM

Yeah dont do it! You will ruine(sp?) your thread, dont even try that!

Serum 11.25.2005 10:59 AM

ncabz usually ruins threads?

Ok then. Just thought it would work cause I remember thats what you do when making the supermaxx diffs.

coolhandcountry 11.25.2005 06:57 PM

I have used the drill method on stuff bigger. I works if screw is not in there tight. If you use about a 2mm bit as the drill grips the screw to drill it will spin it out.

Basketti 11.25.2005 06:59 PM

yeah that sounds good, i'll try it and let ya know how it goes.

rchippie 11.25.2005 07:17 PM

Try heating the bulkhead with a hair dryer or heat gun. It will make the screw a little eaiser to get out.
