Track time with the monster

Ran for about 15 minutes on capital rc track today. WOW power on tap. only thing is i get gome tonight and am cleaning the car and hear a rattle inside the monster case. Hmmmmmm.... so i open it carefully and see that the small black rectangular componet on the board next to the bec coil is laying in the bottom of the case. dont know what it is but the monster still runs! dont know how or why it got there but this is important peice? other than this freak occurance the car was blazing fast. turned the double double into a quad, musch to everyones surprise!

auto2 11.12.2008 12:07 PM

sounds likethe fan plug.does the fan still work?

castlemike 11.12.2008 01:15 PM

Are you talking about the component that is between the edge of the board and the BEC inductor?

BrianG 11.12.2008 01:40 PM

Might also be nice what version it is, or better yet, a pic...

The fan plug is white so I doubt that's it.

BrianG 11.12.2008 04:01 PM

From looking at the V1 and V2 layouts, I would say it's either one of the FETs (unlikely as the BEC would probably fail completely), the transistor right by the fan plug (which looks like the method the circuit uses to switch the fan on/off), or the resistor (I think) right next to the BEC FETs.

castlemike 11.12.2008 06:33 PM

Well if we are guessing what it is......I would say its a V3 and that the component is the TVS that is located next to the inductor. :)

BrianG 11.12.2008 06:45 PM

Don't you love guessing games?

castlemike 11.12.2008 06:52 PM

The suspense is almost unbearable.............

BrianG 11.12.2008 06:58 PM

I had a small rectangular object on the bottom of the case too (didnt open the case, it opened by itself after a jump:). Soldered it back and the esc works again. 5 batteries after that and counting. :)

The case opened today again, so i glued it. Im glad as long as the esc works.

Offtopic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG18bAN_HHA Took a little video, damn camera didnt like bumps tho. :(

sorry everyone, wasnt real specific earlier. its a v3 and yes it is the small rectangular componet between the coil and the edge of the pcb.

AH YES, that is the TVS -- or Transient Voltage Suppressor.

That is a sacrificial part that will shut down the BEC output if the voltage exceeds about 7.5V out on the BEC. (That's a new part on the V3 -- and it's a little fragile where it is mounted. We are moving it slightly on the next revision of the control board. And no, that DOESN'T mean there is a V4 MMM (internally, we are on rev H on the MMM I think....)

So -- not something that is required for normal running, but would be nice to have on the board if the BEC shorted out.

Contact me, and we'll get it fixed up for you.

BlackedOutREVO 11.12.2008 11:18 PM

Capital rc, as in cap city?

Or what track are you talking about?

You have any buggies to run over there?

I need to build my D4 WCE and get over there. We should meet up

slimthelineman 11.12.2008 11:33 PM

will send it in next week. have to work all weekend so i wont have time. not to change the subject but i ordered a cm20 motor yesterday (4200kv) for $20!!!!!!! off castles website. cant wait to run it in the 18t. sorry no 1115:lol:

slimthelineman 11.12.2008 11:36 PM

no i sold my xx-4we and my xxx-4g+ with the rest of my 10th scale fleet. got my rc8 and the 18t for the wifey/daughter

sounds good ill shoot ya a pm next time i head up:yes:

BlackedOutREVO 11.12.2008 11:45 PM

You need to build another buggy. Haha we need to do some racing!

slimthelineman 11.12.2008 11:47 PM

yeah they had a nice used zx-5 in there but kinda over 10th scale for a while. wouldnt mind a b44 though.....

BlackedOutREVO 11.12.2008 11:49 PM

Its super fun! Especially for winter!

You should build one!

slimthelineman 11.12.2008 11:52 PM

maybee. time is more of an issue than anything, between work and the limited time with my family there isnt really time for much racing anymore. (compared to every other weekend years ago)

That's only because you know what the V3 internals look like.

...And being an employee (engineer?) has nothing to do with it.

Good, so who is your reflow soldering QC engineer? You should have a good talk to him.
I inspected two V2s and found A LOT of small solder balls ALL OVER THE PCB BOARD:whip:, some even locate between IC pins:surprised:. The solder balls are held in place by either the solder resin or the protective film later applied on the board after soldering.

slimthelineman 11.18.2008 04:24 PM

wow welcome to the forum.......
