What would cause this?

I just got done running a bout a pack and a half through my truggy.. its got a hardened steel spur gear... well lets just say the spur gear won..

This gear is of unknown origin, i doubt it is hardened. but any idea what would cause the gear to be sharpened like this?

I have seen some sprockets in my line of work that look like that but that was after a couple of years of service...IMO its just wear....

brushlessboy16 11.17.2008 06:17 PM

i was only running for 1/2hour though?

when i got it it had moderate wear but thats 5x as bad as it was

BrianG 11.17.2008 06:24 PM

Well, two things that I can think of:

1) Not being hardened will eat those things up fast.

2) Tooth shape. Not all Mod1 pinions are the same. If you look at Mike's old pinions, they have a different shape than the ones he has today. The old ones were made to use with a plastic spur and are shaped accordingly for proper mesh. His current pinions, along with being hardened, have a slightly different shape so they work well with both plastic spurs and steel spurs.

Friction.:mdr:

brushlessboy16 11.17.2008 06:28 PM

ok, so a new rcm should be fine with a hardened spur?

BrianG 11.17.2008 06:36 PM

In short: Yes.

Just placed my order for a rc-monster 13t hardened pinion :)

Arct1k 11.17.2008 08:11 PM

PS check your bearings - all that metal will have gone everywhere...

That's what my Rustler's diff gears look like after a few runs............

Yeah... 4s/6s and a Lehner 1940/7.

Absolutely.

Also keep in mind the pinion spins much more than the spur does. So even if the material on both was identical the pinion would wear faster. Say you run 13/46 gearing, the pinion rotates 3.5 times more than the spur. So hardened pinon needs to be many times harder than the spur to survive...

very true linc, but that was after only 20 minutes of running:oh:

I had a non hardened pinion with a plastic spur for a couple of months with very little wear. One night at racing my mesh slipped a bit and melted the spur. My only spare spur was a steel one, so I decided to use it for the last race which is only 5 minutes. After 4 minutes the pinion had no teeth left at all and my car had no drive.

As opposed to right teeth?:lol::lol::na:

BrianG 11.18.2008 11:03 AM

 Gotta watch out for those left teeth!

riceman 11.18.2008 11:29 AM

This is why balance is very important! This happened to me when I had my motor and battery both mounted on the left side.

If a tree falls in the middle of the woods and there is no one around to see it, which way did it fall, left or right

Actually the humor is the fact that some people don't get the humor

BL_RV0 11.18.2008 07:58 PM

Who cares? It is a tree.

Depends if it is in the northern hemisphere or southern hemisphere.:rules:

Even better, if a tree falls in the forest and lands on a Mime, does anyone really care?

This is the reason I stopped doing brushless conversions on nitro vehicles. I have had different MT's with all the same results. The pinions only last 1 to 4 runs. I have tried a variety of pinions and its always the same. The hardened ones just last a bit longer but the pinion always gets eaten by the spur. You might try some of the gear oil to help with the friction and that might make them last longer. I just gave up and bought an emaxx. Metal pinion and plastic spur is the way to go. Plus the metal on metal causes radio interference, unless you are running 2.4gig that is.

Just run the plastic kyosho spur gears. I run them on all of my buggies and have not had any issues...

brushlessboy16 11.19.2008 07:36 AM

I dont have any problems with interference with my m8(spektrum).. i threw my hardened 15t pinion on and its doing fine after 2 packs
