Hyper 7 Brushless conversion

So it's finally finished! Well, not really, but it's drivable... So far for my first brushless it seems alright... Here's what I got
Feigao 8L motor
Castle Creations Mamba Max with internal BEC disabled. (from BL_RV0)
Airtronics 94357 servo
Futaba 3 ch FM receiver
Protek 5s 20c 4000mah lipo (from KaztheMinotaur)
Some unknown modded 6v Rx battery from an airsoft gun.
Ran great for about 5 minutes, then it did a barrel roll across a 2 lane driveway, and I lost the last setscrew for my pinion
I'm also working on a fan setup for my MM too, with a new tray for it to sit on.
All I'm waiting for now is my BEC to come in and paint for my new body and then I'll be done(for now...)

tell me what you think

Looking good mike,
Those motor wires are obnoxiously long, Why not rotate the MM 180* so that the wires are right there- thats probably whats causing your range problem. least you can do is braid the motor wires so some of the noise is cancelled

Should be a good time at Trax 70 this upcoming season

well the battery wires are too short to flip it. besides, it was such a pain to take it off last time... 3 hex wrenches, a pair of scissors some vice grips

magman 11.20.2008 08:49 PM

Very nice conversion...I run the same batts. in my mbx-5 w/v/good results!

magman 11.20.2008 08:50 PM

Did you soldier any additional caps on to the mm esc? With 5s and no caps, that may be pushing it a bit IMO....I can't tell from the pics.

BL_RV0 11.20.2008 08:54 PM

How does it work with the 5s? It's a V2 MM... They don't like 5s too much ! hear. Not sure though as I haven't ran the ESC.

Takedown 11.20.2008 09:09 PM

Looks nice. I think you need to step up your game and get an XL though. If you have some money to blow take a look into medusa motors.

eovnu87435ds 11.20.2008 09:25 PM

well, I didnt solder any extra caps on, mainly because I dont have a soldering iron anymore... mine died :( as for 5s, it runs pretty well on there... the components are all rated for 5s, minus the bec. it does get kinda hot, but thats why I am mounting a 40mm fan on it(see the standoffs on the new esc mount) i do need a new motor but I got this one for basically free so im gonna run it 'til I get money, or steal ben's god-truggy with the mmm combo

Takedown 11.20.2008 09:27 PM

Yep the matrix was a nice truck. I miss it.

Dont tempt me ben...:whip:

eovnu87435ds 11.20.2008 11:29 PM

oops... stoopid me forgot to check for body clearance... and it didnt fit! well i have a new design, out of angle stock this time and i'm sure this one will fit

brushlessboy16 11.20.2008 11:30 PM

Dont let brianG find out your using fans...

when do we get pics of this thing?

BL_RV0 11.20.2008 11:31 PM

:na:

eovnu87435ds 11.21.2008 12:19 AM

OK, I finally got it all to work, and fit under the body! and it looks neat too. I have the mm sitting under the tall part of the shark fin, with a 40mm fan mounted on a 45degree angle right after it.

brushlessboy16 11.21.2008 07:36 AM

Looking good- when is your BEC due in?

eovnu87435ds 11.21.2008 03:52 PM

I just got a notice that it shipped today from TrueRC... although i ordered it quite a while ago.

brushlessboy16 11.21.2008 04:18 PM

thats odd...
at least your getting it :D

trev3813 11.21.2008 08:31 PM

Nice conversion, im stealing bens matrix, he just doesn't know it yet. :mdr:

eovnu87435ds 11.21.2008 11:22 PM

hmm so many people after ben's matrix... it could be a contest! and have people across the nation try and steal the truggy!(we'd give ben a lil bit to prepare...) whoever successfully gets it from him wins the truggy!

brushlessboy16 11.21.2008 11:41 PM

Im going to bury it in a welded steel box. then blow up the spot where its buried then hide it in the woods

eovnu87435ds 11.22.2008 02:31 PM

I think ben is trying to break his matrix before anybody could get a hand on it. check his matrix thread.

eovnu87435ds 11.23.2008 05:01 PM

OK upgrade time! I have a 9xl on its way! and the 8l is going to go in my evader

Update 12/2/08

well, I've done some more work on my hyper 7 since last post, and the bash that wasn't supposed to be... I was over ben's and no matter what things just stopped working. First it was the split in the body where the pin hole is, then it was a stripped motor screw, and then it was the spur gear. After that the fm transmitter wouldnt work and then the mamba wouldn't work! I'm guessing most of it was because of the cold, because it all works now that its warm and I replaced the motor screws. The mamba still didnt so I ended up downgrading it to the lowest firmware, then upgraded it to every single firmware upgrade one at a time, then erased all settings, and it worked! but the lvc is still a little bit flaky... I added the BEC that finally came, and WOOHOO i finally have another working soldering iron!!! I mounted the bec on the shark fin, moved the fan and replaced all the hot glue with a 3 mm screw, and added a nice window to the fin so I can access the USB port without the chance of me snapping my mamba in half unvelcro-ing it.(20 lbs of tensile strength holding it down!!!) Now all I am waiting for is the spur gear that is taking like 3 weeks to come from tower hobbies...
EDIT: still having problems with the MM LVC... heres the link to the support thread:

Looks great.
Is that BEC adjustable voltage?

eovnu87435ds 12.02.2008 08:12 PM

yeah, either 5 or 6v output

eovnu87435ds 12.02.2008 10:33 PM

That was bad...

OK my spur gear was officially eaten... glad the steel one is coming!

Oh the joys of a metal spur gear, so ur car sounds like its dragging chains behind it

BL_RV0 12.03.2008 12:43 AM

Yeah, it sounds awful, but preforms well.

brushlessboy16 12.16.2008 01:11 PM

2 Attachment(s)
Here are a few pics of the dead gear and the new one.

The new gear is from a Cen Genesis, it had a different output then standard 1/8th scale diffs so the bearing race was pressed out by mike(can see it in the picture.. Going to have to take the bearing race out of the old spur and fuse it to the new, most likely with 2 part epoxy or Jb weld.
That little output doesnt see that much flex or stress....does it?

brushlessboy16 12.16.2008 06:49 PM

I won.

The bearing race is a press fit with 2 part epoxy to hold it all together.
:)

Lookin good =]

eovnu87435ds 12.18.2008 07:58 PM

Just ran the hyper today, runs great(mostly). I dont have a temp gun so i couldnt check official temperatures, but the fiegao 8l was burnin hot at the rotor, my battery was only a little warm, and surprisingly the mamba max running on 5s was room temperature!

Since the car runs, My next objective is my body. I have a crowdpleaser body that only needs 2 more coats of paint to be done. Too bad as soon as i got home with the paint my can of black fell out of the bag and landed on some threaded rod, and broke open... luckily it was in the garage. I also ordered some reed switches, and I'm going to wire one in line with my switch for the MM, and mount it in a place where i can glue a magnet to the inside of the body, so as soon as I place the body on my car, the mm turns on! my goal is to have the least amount of holes as possible in the body. I ordered a 10 pack of reed switches for 3 bucks, and if it works I might send some out to other people who would want to do the same thing.

brushlessboy16 12.18.2008 08:09 PM

spektrum or any dsm system so you can run the Antenna inside the body.

the aerials can be as short as 3.6inches without a loss in range

yeah, but I already have the hole for the antenna, but its only 3/16th, and the antenna barely fits through, but I have been thinking of going dsm

update 12/21/08

Let this be a lesson to all: if ben invites you to bash at his house, SAY NO! his house is haunted by the bash from hell. every time we try to get a bash there, something of my rc breaks. 1st it was big cracks in the body. then a 40mm fan, then the spur gear, and now my transmitter! at least i was able to get a few minutes of water-sealed bashing in... cant wait for my dx3.0 to come so i can run again!

eovnu87435ds 12.22.2008 05:23 PM

My reed switches came in today!!! so I got everything wired up so I can now turn on my mamba max with just a magnet(that will be glued to the inside of the body) I have the switch still wired inline with the reed switch so I could test with no body on still, but still have the convenience of turning on as soon as u place the body on!

Awesome!
is it affected by the magnetic feilds of the motor?
