How to get heat sink off?

I know this is a bit of a different question

But I have my LRP Sphere TC speedo, and its blue, and it doesnt match my car LOL (going to send the heat sink to anodizing). I ripped apart my fried one, and the heat sink has the glue (IDK what its called) hooking the heat sink to the Fets. I used a heat gun and it came off. But I dont know if that messes up the brains and all of the speedo or not?

Any one have a better/different way to do this? Or am I stupid for trying to do this? lol

Thanks!:mdr:

The glue is probably the equivalent of Arctic Silver. It's thermal epoxy, which is why it took so much heat to get it to soften up. I wouldn't mess with it on a working unit; too much risk involved.

you could use q-tips and easy off to strip the anodizing and end up with a silver heatsink, would that match?

I think I will just leave it on

Car is purple:mdr: I wont worry about it. I can always buy something else. Maybe a Tekin later on.

Thanks guys!

The thermal epoxy will become brittle at near freezing temperatures. Throwing it in the freezer for a while and breaking the heatsink loose should be effective without causing any damage.

+1. I do this with heatsinks all the time. Put it in the freezer for a while, then grip it with a paper towel or something and twist back and forth on the heatsink until it comes loose.

What about 1/1,000,000,000,000,000 angstrom?

I can't beleive it took me this long..... but: "how to get heatsink off?" -I guess that depends on which way the heatsink swings:lol:

:surprised: And here I tought I had a dirty mind lol.

Honestly the best method short of leaving it alone is to freeze it.

 Are you accounting for shrinkage? That makes a BIG difference!

LOL. Wow.........

So where do I buy some arctic silver, and how do I use it? put some on top of the fets, or around the fets?

Thanks!

Hahahaha! Sorry, I couldn't hold that one back. It's a classic!

Might want to "warm it up" before using it again... Practice makes perfect... It is important to "keep your hand in", if you know what I mean - nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more say nor more...

I could go on all night...

That the stuff?

BlackedOutREVO 11.23.2008 12:58 AM

Its been in the freezer for a good 50 or so mins. And the heat sink wont come off

I guess it needs more time?

That's just a compound, like the stuff you'd put between a CPU and its heatsink. Look for the thermal epoxy or adhesive, Arctic Silver makes it and Fry's should sell it (that's where mine came from anyways).

You may need to use more force to break the thermal epoxy bond.
