p90x
hey guys ive been going to a gym for the past couple months and have definetly noticed a difference but when i start school (taking 20 credit hours..) i will be busy likea mofo...
i would like to be able to workout at home and this system seems to be REALLY good. of course i saw it on an infomercial and it grabbed my attention quick. what do you all think? has anyone tried it? http://www.extremebodyworkout.com/p9...ducts/p90x.php it may be a little more expensive than my gym (have to buy dumbells and what not. but i might give it a try for the next 3 months! edit. just thought that i would add that i have been doing the p90x ab workout and it DEFINETLY has improved my stomach. so i think that if the ab workout is good everything else should be right? |
Hey whatever motivates you to exercise consistently. Whats her name? You know the girl your trying to impress with your p90x abs?:mdr:

Tryin to make the old girl jealous? |
It is a decent workout. It works well because it is 5 hours a week too, not just 20 minutes a day three times a week. The important thing to consider is the intensity, if you follow the routines and keep a good pace you will burn a good bit of calories.
I have been going to a trainer that got the p90x set, and he uses a similar routine. But, it is based on MMA fighting too. Less stretching and shadowboxing, more hitting stuff. I can say that the high intensity training has put me almost back to my physical peak of 8 years ago. I just couldn't get it back by going to the gym and lifting weights, so martial arts seems to be the key for me. |
actually there really isnt any girl im trying to impress right now. more of myself.
but since im going away to college in 6 months i do wanna look good for all the ladies:wink: i mainly want to get bigger and more ripped. this will help that right? or is this to just get lean? (thats not what i need..) |
What are your stats now? weight, bodyfat, height, current fitness.
|
To get bigger you really should work with some weights. I'm not saying that you may not gain some muscle doing the p90 stuff, but if you really want to throw on some muscle weight try working with weights.
|
I have been able to get stronger working with weights, but not considerably bigger. I have actually seen more size increase by working high rep pushups, pullups, and bag work- heavy weights just never got me big no matter how much I ate.
Two ways to increase size- muscle fiber hypertrophy (strength- low rep high weight) and increased vascularity (blood flow- low weight high rep). I gain faster with vascularity, and increased blood flow can be used to increase strength and hypertrophy gains. It is a two way street, but everybody is different. |
What works for me is my own custom MD4x workout series.
I just sit on a chair in my office all day drinking an average of 4 Mountain Dews per day. I've got the nicest keg, err ... I mean, 6-pack you'd ever hope to see. :-) (Actually I am down to 1 Mountain Dew per day, but I bet I'd lose 20 lbs if I just cut the stuff out all together. Bleh.) |
I run. A lot.
'Nuff said... |
you could be cheap and torrent it (yes its there i checked)
(piracy is illegal though):intello: |
T-maxx, I've seen that same infomercial! I'll probably see it again tonight since I'm off from work tomorrow and will probably be up watching TV at 4:00 AM again...
Anyways I think you need a combination of cardio and strength training. The cardio, like the P90X, gets you lean so that you look ripped when your muscles become larger from the strength training. You can't really get both without doing both. Take it from the guy who hardly ever works out, but is 5'11 180 lbs. and looks like he weighs 160. |
I have it and can't stop saying good things about it. Those info commercial are no joke. If you stick with it you WILL see results. But you must understand its for fit/active people to step up to a next level. It's not a weight loss program. Whatever you choose good luck.

I will have to side with Chuck Norris on this one. Buy a total gym. I got mine for 100 bucks shipped, with very light use on it. I did cardio on a bicycle, 9 miles a day / 45mins with a heart rate over 160 bpm. The total gym is great for upper body and abs, plus you can do it fast enough to keep your heart rate up, thus extending your cardio workout. I even had a skeptical personal trainer give it a try. He bought one a few days latter.
I do agree with JRH, more reps with lighter weight seems to produce better "real world" results. I have a stocky build naturally, and can build muscle eaily, but not lose fat. More cardio worked for me, and I felt tons better. Plus if you have a lighter build, you will have to live in the gym to maintain any bulk. Better to be in good shape and be healthy, than be a meat head... As for the ladies, physical appearance is important, but if you stand there like a spare prick at a wedding you will not get very far. Work on your overall intelligence (read a dictionary, and watch the discovery channel, and scan a newspaper) and personal hygiene. Chicks like guys who dress well, so investing some money in some quasi designer clothes is not a bad idea. Don't stray too far from your personal style, you still want to look comfortable. My best tip for college life is to stay away from drugs (pills too) and work on your alcohol tolerance. The drinkers are a better crowd to hang with than the druggies, plus a few drinks never hurt anyones chance of making a "love connection" (drinks go in the girl, not you) Make a bunch of friends, and have a good time, maybe try to get a degree... |

and everybody knows r/c nerds are fat and genarally missing several teeth. I'd hate for you to get fit and lose you to mainstram society |
The best way to gain size is compound lifts. P90x is more of a fat loss program. I know a couple different guys who use it and it has really helped them shed unwanted fat.
I've been doing compound lifts for the past 2 months. Gained about 9lbs of muscle, lost a little fat too. Program I was on is called Stronglifts. I started the Stronglifts Advanced but I want to take a break from the hard and heavy routine to keep off the food from the holidays. Oh, compound lifts = deadlift, bench press, squat, row, pullup, push press, etc. I work out regularly now. Back in 2004, I weighed 225 - all fat. Went down to about 170, now I'm around 194. :mdr: |
check this website out http://www.crossfit.com/ ....we do these workouts all the time at the station and to be honest its better (and cheaper:) ) than p90x and the excercises and movements are pretty job-specific as far as firefighting goes but it does the same stuff p90x does.....but as with anything, you get out what you put into it...NO CHEATING, finish every rep, diet properly....i do these after my runs...you'll never believe how much hurt can be squeezed into 20min.'s...

ive never even been drunk before so i dont think this will be a problem for me (drinking in college) some people told me that i will go all crazy since i have not passed that stage yet but ive seen enough through my brother and sistr and im not going that route. i would not mind staying at my gym but without anyone there telling me what to do i know im not getting the best workout possible. thats where p90x comes... someone mentioned i need to use freeweights or actual weights.. well i will be getting that cool bowflex dumbell set along with a bench.. so there will be no power bands for me (hopefully i can do this..?) i know that if i got a personal trainer then i would get way better results since im in a gym and everything but im sure they are way over my budget. with having p90x along with my bench/dumbells i bet in the next 3 months i will get some sweet results. i may order it tomorow. oh and one of you also said something about finding it in torrents.... ya.......... i could and have looked but if i did end up getting the right one it would be over 40 gigs and that would take FOREVER to download. also... if i do buy it i feel that i would feel more obligated to do it if i ever wanted to quit. i did download ab ripper x and it kicks ass. ill keep you guys updated. thanks for all your comments! |

tmaxxracer - You might want to consider reading a book about fitness. I've read New Rules of Lifting (good book) and I'm currently reading Starting Strength. SS is more advanced while NROL is for everyone and can get you well on your way into learning more about fitness, how you body responds to exercise, and how to do them properly. |
that is actually a very good idea ^^ i dont really understand how to workout yet...
ima go to hastings after work and pick up a book. what would you reccommend? NROL? |

OK, honestly....
I like Linc's Total Gym idea... I've tried one before, and it really does work. The free form pullies make you work a lot of smaller muscles durning the workout which is really important. The only things I use at home are a pull up bar and a set of Bowflex adjustable dumbells. They are awesome since you can go from 5lbs to 45lbs per dumbell, and take up very little floor space. Other than that I run. Martial arts is also a great way to get in shape. Being Korean, I've been doing it since I can remember, and it is always a great way to get in shape and blow off some steam. Just find a school that takes pride in their craft. There are too many chop shops where you can "buy" a black belt after a few months of training. Those places are a waste of time. Find a place where they'll bust your ass to move up in rank. Those are the good ones. |

the ladies must be all over you!!! if chuck norris uses the total gym then you know it must be good.. its quite expensive though |
Starting strength is a very good book. HIGHLY recommended read.
Look up "madcow 5x5" if you want a great basic weight routine to start with. Otherwise the p90X wouldn't be a bad start to get you moving around at least. Even though I am not on a weight training program right now, I still do squats and lunges. |

Tmaxxracer - Try NROL. You sound like you want a Hypertrophy program and possibly a Strength program. This book has 3 phases of both. After you do those and get more experienced and want to move on, get Starting Strength. There's all kinds of books and a few new ones coming out. Huge in a Hurry is Chad Waterbury's new book *officially* out in December although you can order now for a slightly higher price. I'll pick it up when it comes out. |
sounds good.
thanks alot! |
No problem man. Take progress pics, record your stats, take measurements, post up on bodyspace, etc etc. Welcome to the world of fitness and health.
