MBX Pro Conversion

Well, I finally made the plunge and am purchasing a rolling chassis off ebay. I know how to get the conversion done and have planed it all out, I'm just lost on this whole diff oil deal, I bash mostly, so I just want them to hold up.

As for a setup im planning on running 12 gp 3700 cells

For motors, either a Basic 2400xl or Wanderer 10 L. Not sure which would be better, but my current controller is an MGM 80, which is risking it with the 2400xl and not enough for the 10L.

Also, is the JR z590M or Hitec 645mg bb a good servo to run for steering? They are sick in 1/10th's, but maybe not enough.

MetalMan 12.03.2005 11:14 AM

I don't even use a center diff on my 1/8 buggy :). I built myself a slipper clutch using Revo parts.

The 10L would probably be a better motor for a 1/8 buggy. It should be fine with the MGM 80amp controller, but if the controller got too hot, you could always put a fan over it.

The 645mg would work well. You need ~100 oz./in. of torque for a buggy.

Batfish 12.03.2005 11:29 AM

Have you already purchased the buggy? I've been contemplating selling the MBX I have as well.

Even bashing, you're definitely going to be pushing the buggy to more than I would trust the MGM 8012. You should consider the 12012, 16016, or the BK 9920/12020 for the best experience.

I agree with MetalMan that 100oz will be good for a bashing servo.

Good luck with the conversion!

:)

Right now I am using a controller rated at 80amps continuous, with a Feigao 540C 9L (similar to 9L). On 12 cells, everything stays pretty cool (under 120 deg.). Same thing with 4s Lipo.

squeeforever 12.03.2005 03:35 PM

i would go for a 8xl or maybe a 7xl. that will provide plenty of torque and will run cool in a buggy. coolhand has run a 9xl on a 7020 so i would assume a 9xl on 12 cells with proper gearing would be safe on the 8012.

Not looking to run an XL motor, extra weight does not exactly convert over to extra power. And I have already purchased the buggy :-\, may I ask why you are selling yours? I'd like to run the 10L, but we'll see how the controller situation works out.

Still looking for suggestions on the diff oil

coolhandcountry 12.04.2005 09:55 AM

try 10 k or 5 k to start on the center diff. I can not say for sure

Batfish 12.04.2005 12:03 PM

As far as diff oil, I prefer the opposite of most setups. I like thicker oil in the rear and lighter in the front. My last setup with a Hyper 7 had 3k front, 5k center, 7k rear.

I'll be selling my MBX stuff in an effort to get a vehicle higher up on the racing scale, as I'll only be racing with it. Not sure what vehicle it will be yet, but it's probably not going to be the MBX.

Re~Mix 12.04.2005 12:09 PM

Alright, I'll get a range of oils, but its looks like 5k for sure in the middle. Any harm in going the same oil all around? I've never owned a 1/8th, but I used to own a xxx-4. Hoping to get more ground clearance and grunt than the little xxx-4.

Now all I need to do is sell my mf1 and Basic 4200 / MGM 80 to raise a little funds for the project.

If you need any parts machined you should contact Andrew over at Cold Fusion Racing. He has done amazing quaility for me, and It will make any project look 1 million times better then chopped up parts.

Well, the roller got here today.

From the looks of things it'll need a new chassis, stainless steel screw set and some tlc. Other than that it looks great for $100. I was surprised with the size, battery mounting shouldn't be any trouble at all with 6 cells.

coolhandcountry 12.07.2005 07:07 PM

I took my buggy for a spin this morning and last night. I have 10 k center with 5k front and back. It seems to be pretty good. I am running a 7xl on my buggy. I tested it with 12 and plan on going with 12-16. I will have to let you know upon further testing.

Cartwheels 12.07.2005 11:09 PM

What is wrong with the chassis?

Re~Mix 12.08.2005 05:34 PM

Its overly scratched up on the bottom and has some residue on it i don't feel like messing with.

Re~Mix 12.26.2005 06:42 PM

Here's where the conversion is at now

Re~Mix 01.02.2006 07:07 PM

And now, after two cans of wd40/trinitybuggy spray here I am. I installed the optional plastic spur, although I oddly needed to use spacers to raise the center diff in order to have clearance for the spur. Other than that the car is almost done, with the except of shocks, battery mount, motor mount etc. I am pleased so far, at least it isn't a heap of clay anymore. The potential battery postitions are in the picture. I will lay them flat if I can, but I am not sure that I have enough room on the motor side. Hopefully the rock guards can take the added stress.

dunky 01.26.2006 09:44 AM

i have question, where are your project?
what performance with 10l?
12 cells?

Re~Mix 01.26.2006 09:56 PM

I will be running a 9L on 12 cells. It should do around 35 mph, but I don't have the supplies in yet. So right now I'm waiting on the motor/esc/ and motor mount.

Re~Mix 02.21.2006 07:21 PM

Here's a quick update. Did a lot of wrenching and cleaning this weekend and made it this far.

Thunderbruiser 02.23.2006 02:51 AM

that's a pretty nice conversion

Re~Mix 04.08.2006 10:38 AM

Well I got quite a lot more work done. I started programming the ESC today, but I ruined one of my 5.5mm connectors (solder dripped down into the part that connects) so I'm off to the hobby shop to remedy that.

looks good

Re~Mix 06.08.2006 02:54 PM

I've picked the project back up. I had a bit of a soldering misshap (now need to get off the protective coating ehh ohh) Don't cut your motor wires!

but here it is at the moment

Sylvester 06.08.2006 03:40 PM

Very nice! Hows it run? Lets get some without the body on!

boss 302 06.08.2006 09:40 PM

looks good.

rear brace

Hey Re-Mix Have you seen my Ultra conversion? Traxxas tubes (103mm) work great for rear brace and allows room for batteries.

Nice conversion by the way. where did you mount the electronics?

HEre is the current layout, I may be switching to a 10L in the future if the 9L proves to be too crazy.

pbsxs 06.22.2006 04:42 PM

Take a look at mine, let me know what you think!
