Post your RC Addicts Anonymous war story here!!

Hi,
my name is Ryu ("hi Ryu", from the addicted audience) and after seeing several other stories similar to mine i thought it would be fun for there to be an outlet for us all to share at least one war-story of your addiction to RC. dont be modest! no ones trying to brag. tell us how much you spent, how much time you spent in the shop in one sitting, or what you pawned for that new Revo. the fights with the wife, the hours on the web, the giving up of sex, food, sleep, money, love, you get the point. its obvious we are all addicted to RC and i wanted to hear how "you got it bad", or how bad you got it.
oh, and TDC, we all know that you are the most addicted of us all but please do share still. how much is your tally to date?
anyway, i dont mean to get personal or pry but just to have fun so let me start.
i had rc cars off and on as a kid and loved them but i didnt get addicted until my first brushless unit - a Rustler VXL - in Sep 08. to give you an idea. i have spent over 16 hours in the garage in one sitting....almost daily actually....dropped 3k without blinking (not normal for me)....and when the wife comes out in the garage and says "honey, i am going to bed" with a wink and a sweetness in her voice, i just grunt and keep twisting that damn hex driver.
since Sep. i have built the Rusty, a 8ight, 8ightT, RC8T, Schumacher 3spd, halfway thru a 1/5 build and of course they all are brushless. I know thats not a lot compared to the 25 cars i know some of you have so thats why i want to hear about your addiction. That way i wont feel so bad about mine.

All in all though, i love this hobby and i aint gonna be leaving any time soon. peace.

It's only mid month and I'm broke. I'll be living off of cup' o noodles until the 3rd, when I get my gov't cheese. But how do you not buy a 1521 for $140? The answer is you can't not buy it. You click "buy it now" and you stock up on ramen, that's what you do:lol:

Ryu James 12.17.2008 07:24 AM

you got a 1521 for $140?!! damn you!! why didnt i see that. i would have hocked the kids christmas to get that!

_paralyzed_ 12.17.2008 07:31 AM

It was in the general section. It belonged to Nic Case and it has gone 140mph:surprised: It's my christmas present to myself:party:

jayjay283 12.17.2008 09:02 AM

Want a human interest piece, I was bribed basically to finish up my college degree about 1.5 years ago and only had about 34 units to complete, I got a nice sum when I graduated (not jaw dropping paris hilton amount) but enought to get a new car and blow $20g on Rcs in a year LOL. This is not bragging 1 bit as I think of all the other things I could have done with the money and feel retarded..but im glad I didnt put id back into the nasdaq. I must say my collection or rcs/lipos and parts makes neighborhood kids salute me when I drive down the street and when one of their cars breaks they are banging on my door for parts or tools

George16 12.17.2008 09:12 AM

I quit drinking and smoking 10 years ago and I saved the money I could have spent on cigs and booze monthly. I used some of that money to get back into rc 3 years ago. My wife does not mind me spending money on rc's because both she and I know that this is better than smoking, drinking, and partying. The biggest bonus of it all; time I spent with my son playing with our trucks together - priceless.

jayjay283 12.17.2008 09:21 AM

Yeah good pints to add, I had quit drinking (not smoking though) <cough cough> and thats a good $300 a month I was wasting and my wife totally supports the hobby although I joke about her. She bought me a RC airplane and my lid for my 8T and occasionaly races them with me though she sucks and just makes me spend hours fixing the truck she drives.. But ive been playing with the nephews (who live with us) and teaching them about lipos, how to charge them etc, how to fix rcs, what tools to use (crap I swear I knew when I was 7 but kids these days dont understand).. makes it all worthwhile and good

George16 12.17.2008 09:51 AM

But they're good at playing video games :neutral:.

My wife actually asked me why I haven't bought any airplanes or helis yet. I told her I'll do so once our ship visits Hong Kong or Singapore :intello:. I need to practice on the simulator first.

I started with RC on 11 December 2007, so now I'm doing RC like a year..

I think I've spent about 1250euro=1750 dollar this first "rc year", and I have to buy a MMM combo still before the end of the year..

I think thats pritty much for a 15 year old kid

Hi mine name is Mark.

***Hi Mark!***

I am 46 years old. I drive around in a Type S Jaguar with two "toy" trucks in the trunk, just in case I find a good bash site. Just yesterday after a meeting with a local health plan's medical director I found a construction site. For about a 1/2 hour if you drove by you could see this guy (with a silly grin on his face) in a white shirt and tie playing with his "toy truck" in the mud.

I too have done this. The high school horn-dog in me of the past, should of slapped the piss out of me.

It all started with a revo 2.5. Then I picked up a mini-t dropped too much money on "wild" brushed motors ha, ha yeah right. Then I went lipo/mamba-25/6900kv wow, shelved the nitro revo and never considered buying nitro again. Sometimes when the R/C fever is real bad I wouldn't stop to eat if it wasn't for my family interfering with their normal eating habits:tongue:

Anther guy with a jag... My dad used to have a bunch of those, xj6, xj12, 60's mark 2, etc....

TDC57 has a jag too.

I do like the random acts of rc... I was in a constuction site a week ago, pitch black outside. I had one streetlight about 200yards away, and my waterproof truck is black too. I have had some weird looks from people while playing.

I have only done rc for 2 years or so, and have easily spent 20k. At one point I had 70 vehicles, but cut back to 40. Almost all are MT or 1/8 scale and they are all brushless. I like building, but just can't bring myself to sell a project. So I put it on the shelf and leave it for 6 months until i get an idea of how to remake it. My current craze is 6x6 MT and scale crawlers. Just dropped 500 bucks on a bunch of parts, money sure spends easily when I have 4 projects going at the same time. But I try to buy used stuff as much as possible, my method of keeping the costs down (or just getting more stuff!!!).

RC keeps me busy, and I quit drinking and going out as much. So I saved about 150-200 a weekend on drinking and going out to dinner. Plus it keeps me away from the single women, who always seem more interested when you are "taken"...

Ryu James 12.17.2008 12:46 PM

i must say also, speaking of addictions, that my wife actually loves my RC addiction because it is the one thing that has really helped keep me clear of my expensive painpill and h addiction. no lie. was reluctant to share that but since we're getting honest....RC has been a godsend...and in all reality i am probably saving money over what i was buying before. you know, RC can kinda attract a wild crowd. i guess guys that like to build crap also like to self destruct but i saw on one guys avatar a quote that said something like "get addicted to RC, not drugs." great advice. take it from us old-timers you younguns out there. stick to the RC and you'll be alright.

now this really has become like an AA meeting.

that definitely is a lot for a 15 year old. if your spending that much now you dont stand a chance. before you know it you will be 46 with your truggy in the back of your car and be out driving it on construction sites during your lunch hour with your shirt and tie on. isnt it great!

At least with an r/c addiction you end up with something of value. Instead of snorting, smoking or shooting it into your body.

I have a buddy that I met thru the LHS and he does RC now instead of drugs and alcohol. Great guy, just got mixed up with the wrong crowd when he was younger and is paying for it now. He is a great welder and fabricator, but has to keep clean or he will be back in jail.

And you do end up with something of value when you are finished. RC is a great hobby, much better than quilting...

Boy, I think I'm in trouble. I too started not drinking "much" and using that so called savings to fund my new addiction. Then I cut back on smoking to help fund the new addiction. A year later, I find myself always in the garage, after stopping at the liquor store on the way home which just happens to be right beside the smoke shop......Wife....what wife....oh, yeah, She's the one that has the smokes I steal when I run out....

I like this thread, I can’t believe I'm missed it before:

(Life blunders!)
• Biggest blunder was getting married! (Hands down)
• Next was not pushing her to get a job (I'm still paying for this one) :diablo:
• Having joint bank accounts (what the hell was I thinking?)
• Smoking!, not the herb  (It’s legal in ca) but the cigarettes!.. a disgusting habit!.. :whip:

(Biggest 08 blunder)

Hi my name is TDC and I’ve got an addiction!.. an RC addition. Please help me!..

I can kick my self in the ass for spending upwards of $15K on RC stuff in 08!..

Lesson learned!.. Not going to happen again..Nope..

E-Revonut 12.17.2008 05:13 PM

My name is Joe and I have an addiction!

Well I bought my first hobby grade RC 1/2/07, a T-Maxx 2.5R it was fun but handled like crap, upgraded to a Revo 3.3 a few months later. Had tons of fun but hated that when I only had 20-30 minutes I couldn't play cause I never knew if the damn thing would start! Last year, just before Christmas I was buying a glow plug at the LHS and seen an RC18t, decided it'd make a great X-mas present for myself that I could play with anytime. That's where it went downhill! I started looking into upgrades and bought a Mamba25/5400kv combo. While looking for more stuff I came across conversions for the REVO. I knew this would be cool, an awesome handling MT that I can plug batteries into and go whenever I had a few minutes. I wound up getting a GorrilaMaxx G2R chassis, Novak HV 4.5 system, and some NiMh. Since I have had a E-MAXX (3905), VXL Rustler, CX2 heli, E-REVO, CRT.5, mini slider, mini late model, 1/10 slider, micro desert truck, MCX heli, CP+ heli, waiting on a new CX2 heli to arrive, and a whole slew of chargers, Lipos, and a DX3R radio! All said and done prolly in the neighborhood of $5k in '08 with the biggest expense being my E-REVO( truck-$450, MMM-$180, Tekno neu $270, Beadlocks, badlands and 17mm adapters-$120 Lipos-$200, Hyperion duo-$240, DX3R $300).

Some of my friends and family think I'm crazy but everyone spends their money differently. Some of my friends and family are heavy drinkers and some smoke some herb, at the end of the night they have nothing. I don't smoke anything and never have, I rarely even finish a 6 pack in a weekend, but I spend a shitload on RC!!! At least I have something cool to show for it, generally keeps me out of trouble, and I have made some new friends.

anson 12.17.2008 06:20 PM

Looks like '08 has been another good year for rc hobby retailers! I know I have contributed a lot this year. With the purchase of about 50 A123 cells, and now moving onto 6S lipos and contemplating which 5S packs to buy for a 10S setup. Bought a LT-6S, and just bought another LT-10S. All together with my MMM, with a feigao 8xl, upgraded to a 1515/1y, now a 2.5D, with a medusa 80mm 1100kV. This brushless bug bit hard.

My stock emaxx wasn't stock for long, with parcels coming in from all over every few days. Living in Australia doesn't help things, most people have very good shipping, but other times I am paying close to as much shipping as the actual product!

Calculated my costs put into my emaxx, and it was close to $2k minus shipping costs. And with the addition of my VERY cheap truggy (Hyper ST Pro roller $120AUD after selling parts from it), I am still looking for more!

Oh yeah, and also don't forget my drifter, and a dx3.0, dx3r, dx3s that I have bought.

Revonut,
great point about making new friends. I have made so many cool new friends due to the hobby. I have even met up with guys i have met here on RCM and we went out and shredded the local golf course with my 8t and his eRevo. seriously, RCers are damn cool people and i love that we all share a common interest that brings us together regardless of class, race, creed, or background. Its great to get to know everyone on RCM!!!
For example, Danny from Tekno is someone who has been way cool. In the spring i hope to fly out to SD and go spend some time with the Tekno guys at ARC Raceway while i take out samples of my upcoming energy drink Fighting Cock Energy Drink. btw, i really want to find a way to sponsor as many RC events/drivers as i can. Move over Rockstar and Monster, Fighting Cock is coming to town. Should be on shelves in early spring. ps. although i am not a drinker anymore Fighting Cock makes the best COCKtails. its in the name!

lol, that's funny.

But in all seriousness, be careful! Women will only take so much of that before they feel neglected and move on - along with your money...

I have a similar problem, but I try to spend some time with the missus and kids and try to wait until they go to bed before slinking off into the basement to tinker.

Edumakated 12.17.2008 06:45 PM

My name is Ed and I am addicted to RC

I experimented when I was in seventh grade, but I could never quite get high enough with nicads and nitro just didn't do it for me, so I just gave up on the hobby.

Early in '07 I discovered brushless and lipos at a party and I haven't been able to stop since. The first time I saw my Rusty VXL hit 70mph, it was down hill from there. The next thing I know I had $1000 bucks into with FLM & RPM parts. Then I started looking for bigger and better highs and that is when I discovered I could race 1/8 electric off road buggies. If I don't get to the track at least a few times a month, I start shaking now. The withdrawal pains are terrible. My wife doesn't understand why I never leave my man room and always working on my car.

I still haven't confessed to my wife that I have spent almost $7500k this year on RC this year.

It only got worse after I met JHautz at the track and now I really can't stop. He keeps pushing more stuff on me like the new... X-ray 808 I just bought that I have to run home and hide from my wife tomorrow.

Mike just called me on my cell about new custom battery boxes and the rc8t chassis. He is threatening to send his goons to break my knee caps if I don't order them right away.

It is getting out of control. Please help me...

my gosh, i am completely offended!! get your mind out of the gutter! why i never!....

you are the first person that has ever said that out of thousands that have now been exposed to the product. thats the marketing beauty of the thing. the sexual inuendos are endless. people will have fun with this. thanks for your input but i completely disagree....obviously, or i wouldnt be putting everything on the line to start production.
certainly there will be a conservative crowd that wont like the name, or that dont like energy drinks in general. but for the energy drink demographic (young men aged 16-35) this drink gets a huge favorable response. and for those that want to protest...bring it on. there is no such thing as bad publicity. the more people come out against it, the more the youth are going to want to buy it.

I PROMISE YOU IT WILL SELL. IN FACT, I GUARANTEE IT.

anything can be sold if its marketed right. but its comments like that (although you are the first to think it wont sell) that i love to hear. just feeds the fire to make sure it succeeds. but you definitely shouldnt drink it. Fighting Cock is for champions, not for those who dont believe.

Arct1k 12.17.2008 07:29 PM

Remember I'm english... Not sure it would go down there - However in the uk having a fag (smoke) is ok... Not sure that would sell in the usa...

forget stickers. i want to make sure everyone gets a free can, t-shirts, whatever. in blind taste tests amongst energy drink users and virgins alike Fighting Cock was picked 4 out 5 times as the favorite over Redbull, Monster, Rockstar, and Full Throttle. and the times it wasnt the favorite it was the 2nd favorite. that no marketing hype. thats real taste tests i conducted.

anyway, i dont really want to change the thread into this. lets keep it as the Addiction War story. although i do want to get the word out and would love to give samples to the regulars here on RCM, my point was that through RC i have made lots of friends and contacts, both professional and non-professional.

if there are enough of you that wish to discuss the energy drink or have comments please send emails to chad@fightingcockenergy.com and copy that email to fightingcockenergy@live.com

or i can start another thread if its acceptable to RCM. i dont know what their policy is on something like this.

i lived in England for 2 years and loved it there. i remember fags...or taking the piss out of someone...or going to the pub and getting pissed. its all slang. the bottome line- the drink is called FIGHTING Cock. its a rooster. and cocks that fight have some serious awesome attributes. they are tough as hell, they fight to the death, they strut like the own the world, and they impregnate all the hens on the farm. what guy doesnt want to be like a Fighting Cock?

Arct1k 12.17.2008 07:43 PM

I suck down 4 passion fruit rockstars a day and my nephews drink 1 or 2 green Monsters, love to try something better !!.. I lived in England for 2 years too and im still hooked on the fags and love to give wankers a right kicking.

MTBikerTim 12.17.2008 08:03 PM

Hi, my name is Tim and I have a problem.

I don't even want to add up how much I have spent on RC this year. It would be scary. I really want to buy a Medusa 80mm for the brushless savage (around $230au) to replace the POS Feigao but I am being really good and I haven't bought one, yet. I am spending close to $2k australian on a trex 450 for christmas so I am no where near rehabilitated.

Also because my trex is sadly not going to be here before christmas I decided to spend a heap of money to bling up my little coax for something to do over the christmas break. Buying parts in australia Sucks balls. If it's not the price that kills you its the stupid distributors never having stock of anything. My trex was ordered back in early november. I ordered the XL style dog bone kit for the Savage X not long after it was released and it still hasn't shown up. How long has that been out for, 4 or 5 months?

On a side note I took the brushless savage for a rap last night. I thought to my self I need to learn to drive this thing hard and stop babying it so much. So I was giving it heaps and of course I ended up putting it into a drain hard. I actually thought I was going to demolish our wheely bin but the drain stopped it first. Thankfully only damage was a bit of a mangled Losi shock.

Yeah I have a problem but at least I am another person who doesn't drink, smoke or inject.

i totally see your point Arct1k. you know whats funny though - Wild Turkey has a new whiskey out that has a light honey flavor to it. and although whiskey and energy drinks dont mix well they are using this new WildTurkey Honey to mix with energy drinks and they are calling it a "Beehive". however, when my friend heard about Fighting Cock he immediately came up with a new name for the FightingCock and WildTurkey mix. its called a "CockGobbler".:lol:
anyway, like you, most men probably wont order this drink. however, the gay bars will eat this up...no pun intended.

Good decision James :intello::party::party:.

Well it's funny because I currently work as an Addictions Counselor for the Navy now. I tell the guys to buy an RC and join our club instead of wasting their money on booze. One of the topics in our treatment program lets them figure out how much money they spend on a weekly basis and almost all of them were dumbfounded to find out exactly how much they were spending. Needless to say, our club is bigger now.

Let me officially start the group session now.

Haha great posts... I really enjoyed Edumakated's lol.

So now would switching to 1/32 scale be like a m-clinic for junkies?

I admit I am an RC binge-r, it's not a full time habit, but I enjoy an occasional pull on the throttle, and I like the smell of it, RC.

I am a long term abuser, I'll put it down fer awhile, then don't ya know... right back to the mistress' teat.

;)

Ahh what an excellent read!

My name is Sid and I also have an addiction. Thankfully, I can put the blame for my addiction fairly and squarely on the shoulders of my lovely missus. Back in '06 she really wanted a Suzuki Swift for a car. Being Christmas time (not the best time to buy cars) I thought I would get her the next best thing - a remote controlled one. Off to the hobby shop I went, and home I returned with a brand new Tamiya M-03 swift.

Needless to say, she drove it once, got bored after 10 minutes, and then I had a drive..... Need I say more lol?

This year I have converted 2 nitro trucks to electric, bought 3 new trucks (and sold a few) as well as investing in 2 new aircraft and a 1/5 scale Baja...

Having just ordered an 80mm Medusa for a Christmas pressent for myself, I am now minutes away from placing an order for some new LiPos from hobbycity.

My poor paypal account is thoroughly abused, my missus can't understand why I can't stop, my friends, instead of deserting me are all looking over my whenever I take one of the RC's out, and the neighbors all hate me! They hate me because their kids all want RCs now lol :)

I never drank or smoked much before either, just couldn't see the point to it, but I am constantly amazed at how much I am able to spend on this hobby and feel good about it.

I've done something else that's interesting tho. I am trying to (as best I can) record all of my spending's in an excel spread sheet. I reckon it'll be an interesting read at the end of next year :) I just have to make sure my better half doesn't get wind of it lol.

Anyway, salutations to all you other addicts out there. I feel your pain :)

IM not addicted :mdr: i swear i could quit anytime:rofl:  i used to race rc when i was in middle school got out of it and into skateboarding, bmx, and MX. i dont bmx much and i got the itch to get back into rc just over a year ago when we saw a race going on at a track in LA on our way home from a weekend of mx racing. It was ok at first, then it went down hill from there, i do have my limits i will never let my checking account drop below 1,500 when i get under 2k i start looking at what im not using anymore and it leaves.

My big problem is i have 2 veichles (still paying on my new car), a 16' all aluminum Pace enclosed race trailer (generator, AC,folddown bed, cabinets, the works), i have 2 fully built crf hyrbrid race quads, and one fully built 400ex that i play on and ride fmx with (none even have stock frames), and a 125 CR3 pitbike. Id say my RC's arent that bad when you consider i have more money in the 4 sets of carbonfiber beadlocks for my 3 quads (200 ea x 16!!!! :surprised: ) i have litrally spent every last dollar ive made in the last 7-8 years on my hobbies and id do it agian, ive got tons friends who worked just as much as i did and dont have much if anything to show for it. My dad always tell me im "cheap" cause i dont like to spend anymoney on little things like going to the movies just going out with everyone, but inreturn ive bought just about anything ive wanted within reason.

this sums me up
