Hyper ST CF Chassis Conversion
 
Sup guys, as you know I have a BL Hyper ST with a 600XL, MMM and a 6s NeuEnergy lipo. Its ungodly heavy (in a bad way) at 10lb 14oz RTR. IE- time for a diet. Lutach thinks that I could get my truck around 7lb RTR. I will be making a 3mm CF chassis with a hybrid alum front to take care of the kickup. I will also upgrade the truck some along the way with a new DX3S radio system, possibly a better motor, and just fixing the things that need a little love. I will ditch the center diff in lieu of a ofna solid centre with a 51t plastic spur. I will also change the springs and go thru the entire truck, helping it out a bit. I don't have any pictures at the moment because I do not have a hookup cable for my camera. I am getting my milling machine tomorrow (only 363 days later than planned) and will be purchasing the CF sheet shortly thereafter. Thanks for reading everyone and have a great one!

I dont think that u can get the truck to 7lbs. RTR nitro truggies are 9-10 lbs

yah 7lbs if u do a Mr c conversion and make EVERYTHING carbon fiber.. i dont see that getting down to 7lbs with a 6s pack- just wont happen.

maybe as a roller... Im interested in mill work tho :)

It will be as light as Mr. C work. I'm not sure if I'm going to do CF shock towers or not.... I firgured 7lb is a decent number because Lutach got his MBX5T down to 5.5lb RTR with 8s lipos.

whats up BL RVO,
i am excited to see your project. as you know i am doing the same thing. i tried the chassis first without kickup and it worked pretty good but some adjustments have to be made so i will now be doing a alum and CF fusion for the kickup as you will be doing. thats great that you have a cnc machine. where are you located? i would be willing to pay to have my pieces cnc'd. another member also offered to do this but just wondering if you might be closer to me. i am in utah. closer distance means less time and money for shipping. anyway, here are some pics of how i intend to do mine. btw, still havent weighed mine but the 5mm isnt much lighter, if at all. the 3mm will definitely shed some weight though.

I do not have a CNC, I will be getting a manual mill.

With 6S 2200 and 2500mAh it's actually close to 7lbs and with 8S 3700mAh it's actually a little over 7.5lbs.

I'm actually not going to use your design, just going with a single battery pack. Only chassis I can compare it to would be Mike's, except mine will be CF and I will have the RX in a different spot.

it looks pretty nice but is there a way to move the item you are milling or do you just have to use your hands? if there is a way to clamp down the chassis and then move the entire table in any direction (by turning knobs or something like on a lathe) this will result in much straighter cuts. i know moving it around by hand to mill out an area is tough to keep straight. i will say this though. milling carbon fiber is 100x easier than milling alum. you can see the milling i did on my CF chassis with just my dremel. not super clean but not bad. i tried the same thing on alum and just gave up. a real pain in the ass with a dremel.

Most manual milling machines you can lock one lever and move the direction you want without the other moving. Machines that cnc's CF are very high RPM and uses carbide bits and this is where the high cost comes into play.

The mill has a sliding table that is controlled by turning knobs. Lutach, do you think the mill I linked to is up to the task of milling CF?

Yes, those knobs actually lock to avoid it from sliding and messing up your job (The ones I've seen does that lol). The thing with CF is that the machines that CNCs it are very high RPM and the bits themselfs are somewhat expensive. This is information from some of my clients.

I don't know what kind of bits Harborfreight has, but check with them first. After that just buy some scrap CF and test on them before using the good stuff.

just make sure the bit is carbide and you should be good
