jnev's Hot Bodies D8 build

Time for another project. I just sold my 8ight, and am ready for another buggy. Items should arrive by next weekend hopefully. And I am saving my order for Mike's stuff until he finishes the D8 motor mount. I'll keep this thread updated with pictures of the build and how it runs. Stay tuned!

Semi Pro 12.26.2008 12:50 AM

why did you sell your 8ight?

Arct1k 12.26.2008 01:38 AM

Dam you must have a better coupon than $5! It is 349 at amain and 10% off coupon still avail...

wallot 12.26.2008 08:50 AM

couldnt help myself :)

better coupon like this one? :)

http://rcx.cz/temp/th.jpg

and getting the same stuff from amain for my D8 ;)

jnev 12.26.2008 07:22 PM

Semi Pro - I was just ready to move to something new.

Arct1k - I didn't spend enough to use a bigger discount.

wallot - Great list of items you bought. Looks like you're ready to rebuild all your cars.

gixxer 12.27.2008 10:46 AM

now this has gotten me interested. any idea when mike will have a motor mount for the d8? I figured I would do another 8th scale in the spring but with the price of the hot bodies maybe I could get the buggy now and just slowely do it over the winter.

anyways I am interested in seeing how your builds go.

Mike_D 12.27.2008 09:45 PM

Maybe too late now but you guys could have spent $50 less for you D8's.

jnev 12.27.2008 10:25 PM

gixxer - Mike didn't specify a date, but he said that once he builds up his D8 he will be working on the mount and maybe even chassis he mentioned. This buggy is getting quite popular, so it can't be too long before he makes the mount. However, the Kyosho motor mount will fit with the front Kyosho bulk, as well as the Lightning stadium mount fitting with the Lightning front bulk.

Mike_D - Nice find, and only one in stock too. At Tower Hobbies however you can get it for the same price. If I were to buy only the buggy and no extras, I could use the $50 coupon. And HPI/Hot Bodies has a rebate program going on at the moment, so for the D8 you get $25 back, and for some cars all the way up to $100 back.

gixxer 12.28.2008 08:05 AM

Thanks for the info. I am tempted to order one now since tower has the really good codes this month even if the car is more expensive from them. Along with hotbodies rebates.

I would really be interested in a whole chassis. The ones mike made for the rc8 look so nice. Also if he did the whole conversion I could just ebay the stock chassis and probably come out to about the same price as adding a mount and battery tray.

Either way if I get the buggy I will be ordering some stuff from the Monster. Been awhile since I have done that anyways so he is do.

gixxer 12.28.2008 08:23 AM

one more thing. do you know if the kyosho spur will fit the hot bodies center diff? I really hate the sound of the metal on metal once you take away the nitro noise.

jnev 12.28.2008 01:51 PM

I too am very interested in a whole chassis conversion from Mike. Hopefully it isn't too long... I don't know for sure that the Kyosho spur fits, but I can only assume it does because the Lightning Stadium motor mount fits with the stock D8 diff, and the stock lightning diff fits the Kyosho spur perfectly. So assuming they use the same center diff, they should work. Worst case, you can always just buy the lightning center diff separately.

I'll be on vacation all this week so no updates on the build until next weekend.

wallot 12.28.2008 01:56 PM

kyosho spur will fit ok. D8 uses same diffs as lightning stadium pro

i am more interested if Kyosho lightened spur will fit.

TDC57 12.30.2008 05:00 AM

Very COOL Josh:intello:!!

it's almost time for another bash session.. When you do think you'll have it all completed?? and I hope you'll be posting build pictures of it??

Have a great vacation Sir.. Be safe..

jnev 12.30.2008 10:52 PM

Greetings from Mammoth Mountain, CA. I just finished my 2nd day of snowboarding and just got a notification that the D8 was delivered. :yipi: But I can only start building next weekend. I have snowmobiling to look forward to tomorrow. I should also be able to get some video of my 8ight-t in the snow if things work out.

Thanks for the kind words Shawn. I am hoping to finish it by the end of January as I have a lot of stuff to do until then (high school soccer, bike races, SAT's and finals). But I still have two other cars to run mean while. I was thinking maybe presidents weekend (mid February as far as I know) we could set up another SoCal bash. Many build pictures will be coming as well.

TDC57 12.31.2008 12:44 AM

:yipi: Heyyyyy outstanding Josh.. That will give you something to look forward too.. So you say the package is at your house and you’re gone for a few days Ha??? :oh:

Does anyone KNOW WHERE JOSH LIVES ??   Just kidding Sir..

Have a great time in Mammoth. Were are looking forward to see some snow pictures and maybe a snow bunny or two too

jnev 01.03.2009 04:48 AM

I'll need to edit the small amount of footage I got when I get a chance. It gets dark so early, especially in the mountains I barely had any time to run my truck...

Anyway, I got the box safely inside my garage thanks to my trustworthy neighbor. Hopefully I can start the build next weekend, but if not, it will have to wait for a couple weeks...

Did a tiny bit of work tonight... glued up the tires and completed the steering assembly.

I bought the 50 tooth lightend spur, the diff cup was a hair too big, just did'nt fit right. Luckily I was able to just get everything I needed to build a Kyosho center diff cheap. Got the Kyosho center diff spacers to raise it since the 50 tooth stuck below the hole in the chassis. Oh yeah I'm using the Kyosho RC-Monster center diff mount with Kyosho front bulk and top plate.

You will like the buggy.

TDC57 01.06.2009 06:24 PM

:gasp: Nice Josh... verry Cool...:yipi::yipi:

wallot 01.06.2009 07:19 PM

Jnev where is the rest of the buggy build? :)
my finally cleared customs and will arrive tomorrow

jnev 01.07.2009 02:33 AM

Thanks Shawn. New pictures will be up tomorrow night. I have to send my camera into Cannon, so I need to use my dad's ancient one. I finished the front end so that is what the pictures will show. The build has gone very smoothly so far and it was very easy to follow the directions. All the parts fit great and seem to be very tough and high quality as well. We'll see how it turns out... I am also going to try to include mechanical brakes... more of a hybrid set up similar to MetalMan's set up.

jnev 01.07.2009 11:46 PM

Front end complete. Hopefully I'll get a chance to start the rear end as well tonight...

wallot 01.09.2009 09:56 AM

so slow :) i got in done in two nights (about 6 hours of work) Really nice build. One of the best I have ever seen.
I am getting a second one for spares as if I have it as spare it wont brake :) that will probably endup brushless after I see how it holds up and which parts I really need.

I just wish it wasnt 5 degrees F and snow outside.

jnev 01.09.2009 08:58 PM

 The weather is the exact opposite here right now. Sunny (getting dark though) at about 70*F. I'll get some more work done tonight... probably finish the rear end. I am not slow, you just have time to work on it.

jnev 01.10.2009 02:56 AM

Finished the rear end as promised.

 Josh,
Outstanding update….:yipi::yipi: I also wanted to compliment you on you pictures / update,:intello: you either got a new camera or you really know how to use you yours, very clear pictures, magazines style.. Looks GREAT (I love the smell of new parts in the morning) Hhahahhhahaaa… Please keep up the great work and I’m hoping you have it ready by the next month.. I don’t want any excuses when my 808 kicks it's ass… HHHHaaaaaa… your pal and have great weekend sir.. :na:

Shaun..

magman 01.10.2009 10:23 AM

Looks nice Josh....I will be interested in how it performs/durability. For the price, you can't go wrong if it is even someone durable.

TDC57 01.20.2009 04:10 AM

Any new updates Josh ??? will it be ready by the 15th???

have a great one Sir..

jnev 01.20.2009 10:23 PM

I finished building the shocks, but I didn't think posting pictures of that was needed... although I could if anyone wants to see them installed.

I also just received this email from Mike:
Quote:

The D8 motor mount design is done and they should be listed and available by the end of the week, Josh.
I shouldn't have any problems getting it running by the bash. Worst case scenario, I'll just install the electronics on the 15th.

TDC57 01.27.2009 03:17 AM

 Are you still on track for completion by the 15th Sir???

I want to run my 808 against it..:intello:

RC-Monster Mike 01.27.2009 10:31 AM

The D8 mount will appear on the site today(so Josh should be good to go by the 15th). :)

jnev 01.27.2009 09:53 PM

Update: Just order a motor mount, battery tray, pinion gear, front motor cover, and rear motor cover from Mike. I have a little change of plans though for the buggy. I decided that I will run a 1512/3d (1700KV) on 5s with motor brakes. Someone just bought my 4s pack, so as soon as someone buys my Neu 1515/1y, I'll be able to order the motor and 5s pack. Wish me luck!

rschoi_75 01.28.2009 01:53 PM

Hope it all works out. Good luck on the sale!

wallot 01.28.2009 05:41 PM

Just couple D8 tips - watch your front droop as if you have too much CVDs will be too short. Rear droop is ok.

Screws (with lock nut) that hold turnbuckles to the ackerman can get stuck under the front plastic brace after harder hit. I ended up using socket head screw put in the other way around with lock nut under the ball end. no problems since then.

couple is 2 so thats it :)

jnev 02.05.2009 01:55 AM

Thanks for the tips. I'll look into those. All I am waiting for now is a battery tray, motor, and battery.

Got some parts from Mike the other day. Ordered the wrong battery tray, so another one is coming. Here is what has been done so far.

Looks nice Josh...Getting at the motor screws will be a bit tough though w/out removing the center diff. assembly. I am trying to guilt one of my co-workers into buying one of these....for the $ you can't go wrong!

jnev 02.15.2009 11:58 PM

Finally finished! Set is Mamba Monster ESC, Neu 1512/3d motor, and a Neu 5s 4300mah lipo pack.

Steve182 02.16.2009 02:20 AM

Nice rig! I have been drooling over the D8's since they came out. Has to be the best buggy for your buck on the market right now.

MetalMan 02.16.2009 02:36 AM

There it is
