FG Monster 1:5 Truck / Plettenberg Bolido Brushless
 

OK after my disaster with the Lehner 3080 motor and the BK 36.150 I ended up replacing it with the Plettenberg Bolido and the Schulze 40.160. Inspite of what the htreads says this motor is more than capable of powering the FG monster. In fact I never hit the throttle more than 30-40% of fear of crashing the truck. The videos was shot outside my house on the road which is a bouncy road. I will take the truck to a flat piece of land or tarmac and open it up.

Cool video and nice truck. You almost hit your cameraman too :rofl::rofl:.

Yep - the thing bounces on the road and it loses traction. It is like trying to aim a missile.

Where you see the velcro on side was where the previous BK controller was mounted - you can still see the soot of the fire on the rollcage

wow, very nice truck! Not too many trucks round the place with setups of that size, that's for sure! =)

Those capacitors would be worrying me every time it flipped on it's lid mounted like that tho.... please tell me those pics are just deceiving my eyes...

Yes the caps are at least 2 inches from the top of the rollbar. I was very mindful of this and ensured that when the truck rolls over the schulze wouldnt get damaged by knocking the capacitors off.

The motor mount is from a boat then, being H&M? Any problems mounting, or pretty much a straight bolt in?

Very nice 5th scale you have there Mohan. I would love to see some data from the runs you make.

I will get the eagle tree conencted - I made a bit of a problem by hooking the 2 deans male plugs in series to the controller. So when I hook up the eagle tree I can only meassure the results from battery. can i just double the voltage and assume that the current draw is the same from each plug.

H and M modellbau do a fg motor mount specific for cafs. they trade from a website I called onefive.de

I just double the voltage setting on my data recorder when it's hooked to only one pack. Since the packs are in series, each one would be delivering the same AMPs and that's what I really want to see.

Thats a very nice fg you've got their. Thats one thing I dont like about 1/5's. They tend to be very clumsy at higher speeds because of how narrow they are.

That truck is quite something. Whats that yellow and black thing behind the red steering servo- rx pack?

Thats very nice. Sounded like a firecracker when you plugged it in.

Are your tires balanced? That can help get rid of the bouncies.

Oops - didnt try to balance them. I have read a few threads about balancing them but these tires are a bit on the big side. Any tips?

Neil - yes indeed. Instead of using a BEC I decided to use a 5amp 6V receiver pack made up of NIMH. I am sure if I could get away with a BEC but at over 37V I didnt have many choices. I also orginally wanted to run the truck at 12S and I was having difficulties getting hold of a BEC to reduce the voltage that would not overheat when I was turning that massive Large scale servo (I tried a few Heli BEC's)

Wow!! That thing is gia-normous. Very nice man. That thread pattern probably doesn't help much at higher speeds either.

I think your tires are not for high speed blast like you intended to run. I t is the reason why it's bouncing like that, it probably balooning up like crazy when you hit the throttle. Very nice conversion, wish I have the money to make mine all nice like your conversion. Nice roll cage also. i also have 3X share of fire in my belt from ESC going from too much gearing for top end.

I used the Monster truck wheels for the traction. I first tried the stadium wheels and the torque was just wasted - you could see the wheels just spinning on the ground. The Monster truck wheels (Big foot) are much better at traction but dont do that well at high speed. I also think that the rubber is a bit old from sitting around and they have become kind of flat where they have been lying flat on the floor while the truck stood still. It may be worthwhile putting stiffer inserts or getting new wheels

It is icy cold - sub 0 temperatures here in the UK - I dont think I am going to go out for a spin int he next few days.

you are like the king of 1/5 around here. i love the truck. i cant wait to build a 1/5 in the future. i will be coming to you for help. btw, what do you plan to do with all those Neu motors you bought from me? any new projects?

I really love large scale brushless. I really want to build a fast but yet very torquey monster truck.

There is no supplier of Neu Motors that I am aware of in the UK. Whenever possible I stock up on the Neu's. I have got a Savage XL brushless with 3 speed and reverse. I know that the tranny is weak in this configuration but I dont want to bash this truck - just build a truck that hopefully have good acceleration but also have good speed due to the 3 speed tranny.

Eventually I would like to have 3 Large scale cars. A Monster truck, offroad 4 wheel drive from MCD and a street Racer / Stadium type truck.

That is a nice rig you have there. The first thing you need to do is get that thing low to the ground if you want to go fast. You have a very sound looking chassis setup, and that cage is very nice also, but for high speeds you are much too high. Can you find some low profile road tires for that thing? There is no way you are going to go much more than 35 to 40 with those dozer tires on there. If you could hook up something like the Proline Roadrage tires on Axial beadlock rims, and get them balanced you might be able to get some really good speed runs out of that Bolido. how do you like the motor? I have a low and stretched out Maxx truck that I want to put a Bolido into for some high speed fun. Were there any heat issues running that setup? If not then you can always gear up for more, but your wheels are going to be a problem the way you have it now. Good luck.

The pinion that meshes up to the diff looks like it's ready to let go under that power, have you considered replacing it?

I originally had the Bolido on a 1:5 scale FG Race car setup.

After I burnt up the tires just wheelspinning I changed the wheels to the much thicker Stadium wheels. More grip but the insane motor just wheel spun the tires. Once I mounted Bolido motor in the Monster truck the wheel spin issues went as the massive tires hugged the ground but now I am bouncing around at high speed. Got to get the balance right. Maybe if it stopped raining I could take the truck on gravel / field and try its off road capabilities. I tried hooking up to a Eagle tree logger but the amp draw at times is over 130 amps and the eagle tree is rated at 100amps. I have another more sophisticated eagle tree with the wireless dashboard - need to buy the hall effect amp sensors that use a coil through the power leads to measure amp draw as it is rated upto 200 amps

The motor runs cool it does not struggle hauling around a 25lb truck. You should have no problem in a stretched out Maxx truck.

Yes I have considered that - actually thinking of replacing the diff as well.

Thanks for the input. It may be a few months before I can get it all setup, but I will post up when I do. I have four projects going at one time so my progress is slow. I just cannot focus on one project for too long, because I get burnt out. So I try to mixx it up and change projects from day to day. It keeps things interesting. I like your 1/5 scale project though. I hope to get into those next year for some fun. Keep up the good work and have fun.:lol:
