Yet another Gorilla is born
I know it's been done before but this is my first Gorilla Build so perhaps you guys can point out any failings in my plan.
It's not however the first T/E-Maxx I've built so it's familiar territory and I still have a bunch of unused stuff hanging around from those earlier builds  I originally started with the of idea using an old "Ebay Special" E-Maxx I'd picked up as a base but in the event this project has gotten way out of hand and ended up being assembled from 95% new parts. I think the only parts that were from a donor truck are some gearbox parts, pillow balls and a couple of hinge pins [gulp] Rather than build up a full Alloy Shelf Queen (a sickness of mine) I planned to make this project useable from the outset. Alloy has been used exclusively where needed only, diff casings, bulkheads, steering linkages and chassis. The suspension parts remain plastic albeit RPM This way the truck remains light & nimble but hopefully strong and resistant to the bending & breakages all-alloy vehicles invariably suffer. So, to battle............. 4-spider HB diffs with Nova buckets, SuperMaxx cups and RCM output shafts should take anything I will throw at them http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_03.jpg FLM Hybrids http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_06.jpg RPM towers, mounts, arms, knuckles, bumpers, braces & skids http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_22.jpg Supermaxx shocks http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_13.jpg Seems little point in having two motor mounts if I'm using One motor so Using the old gear casing as a guide, my trusty hacksaw and Dremel soon had the spare metal in the trash can http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_15.jpg Mocked together with dummy gearbox in place to enable me to make centre shaft measurements http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_25.jpg |
Nice-looking build. I actually left the other mounting mount for the 2nd motor because it helps in cooling the motor. It acts as a heatsink.
|
Looking good.

Why use just one high torque steering servo when two will fit?
Some modification to the steering linkages and servo heights was called for but it works very well. Pictured here with one alloy crank and one plastic - second alloy crank in post Grrrr http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_34.jpg Radio Box installed between steering servos. Servo wires run inside boot laces and into box through rubber grommets to clean appearance http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_38.jpg Alloy Gear Box casing will stop any meshing issues to to case flex http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_41.jpg Ofna 17mm Hexes http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_44.jpg Revo ProGraphix body with Mirror Chrome highlights http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_46.jpg Waiting on Electronics and a selection of pinions as well as a Robinson slipper. Got to make up a dogbone for the front centre, should be interesting....... |

I wondered about that but figured the alloy gear casing might sink heat away too. I'm wondering whether to use the second motor mount point to hang an ESC mount from actually......... |
Are you still running a 2 speed inside that transmission?
|
I dont see how he could really- both servos are on steering duty , so a 3rd mini servo would have to be custom mounted to the rx box or something.
On the steering servo front (this is like watching my own build in many respects- even the thread title is a ripoff ), the hs645mgs arent really all that high torque, so you really do have to run a pair of them in a maxx (150in/oz each or there abouts)- they wont turn my jumbomaxx rubber at at standstill, but with more sensible tires I think they'll do just fine. Funny, for a minute there I thought you were the guy who bought my modified motor mount I made a year or so ago... |
Hey Neil, I still see the shifting arm on that tranny but no servo.
|
At the moment it does indeed have the 2-speed internal setup, I will lock it in 2nd gear.
Eventually I'll pick up a Gorilla single speed setup..... I think the two 645mg's will be fine for my wheel/tire choice. Agreed they aren't the most powerful but I like them and have good experience with them reliability-wise. |
i run one of those 645's on my maxx and with mgt tires it turns them no problem. What kind of tires are you going to be running?

well you dont have any trouble turning then.
|
Hey Nice build SIR..
My two cents!.. Loss the 3906 trans (I do like the polished look!) and either have MetalMan fab you up mounts for the 3905 or Yes get the FLM trans.. I like the attention to detail.. Very clean.. Now go it dirty! and show us!.. LOL.LOL.. Nice build Marcus.. You may also need to do this with the FLM... http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11589 If you have any issues let me, I'll make you one.. Have a great one.. Shaun. |
Shaun, if I didn't go to the john a couple of minutes ago. I could of got my post in before you. Seem like you a always get your post in before me and were in the same time zone.
Another Gorilla is always a joyous occasion. Time to celebrate! I like the clean look of the servo box and boot straps. Nice job. Where'd you get you tranny case? It doesn't have a FLM look to it. |
Great minds do think alike!.. But your a far better Man than I..
It's only 11:00 pm for me; it got to be pushing 1:00 am for you! + It’s 62 degrees out side for me, YOU, your probably freezing your ASS off..:lol: All and all = you’re the better MAN.. Have a great one.. P.S. Sorry for jacking the thread.. I’ll stop.. |
Yes, the 3905 tranny would be a nice touch for sure (not as good as a slipperential though - hmmmmmmmm).
Right now I want to get it running and see what falls off first. When I start having to fix it I'll probably want to start experimenting. The gearbox is a new offering from www.eracingpro.com. They aren't on the site as yet seemingly. I scored it from a Canadian seller on Ebay. Now, where is that darn postman and the rest of my stuff? |
Looks like a Mustang in your aviatar. Yours?

Us Pony owners need to stick together  Story, pics & videos of it HERE http://www.mkeeler.com/mustang/D1.jpg |
So I locked the gearbox into 2nd gear with a Redneck modification. I don't expect long life from the gearbox so it'll do until I find an alternate.
RR Slipper clutch arrived today so I'm another step closer to target...... http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_53.jpg |
Thanks for the link Marcus. Totally cool. The stang I can't even begin to say how nice I think that is. Let me just say it gave me goose bumps more then once. Very impressive and flat out jaw dropping nice. Thanks for the ride around the course too. The video is deceiving as to how fast you are actually going. It was a fun ride. Well done driving, I didn't see anyone in the rearview the whole time. :) I wondered why their right hand blinkers would come on when you passed them on the right hand side. It became clear when I was looking at your old cars. Your son sitting on the wrong side behind the wheel. The light came on eventually. Yes I was a little bored, but probably not as bored as you were when you put it together. I was curious as to what led up to the current summer toy.
Back on topic. I have some RR DD slipper stuff in the back not being used or needed. Holler if you need something. |
I'm good for the Slipper now, thanks for the offer though
I suppose I'll be hooking up with a Gorillax single speed unit for the gearbox as and when and sticking with the RR Slipper. Is the RR slipper the one guys are using generally or is there another I should be considering? Yes, Video foreshortens the whole experience in a car [and many other fast paced scenarios] doesn't it. I can tell you that the feeling in the car was somewhat more fraught. The 'g' meter tells a more realistic story, you see it twitching as the rear was dancing on the edge of grip hahahaha Actually I am now in the land of left-hand-drive (Canada), the video was on the road course at Cayuga, just outside Toronto. Been here for 2 years nearly. The idea for the blinkers is that a car being past is suppossed to show which side he'd prefer to be passed on, so it varies depending on track position, and whether the victim even sees you coming of course  |
Most of us have did the conversion to run the revo slipper. There's a couple threads in the revo and maxx forum about the conversion. Depends on which case you are using which thread will be the most helpful. There's a pretty good range of spurs to choose from now days to use with it. Why I have RRDD's not being used anymore.
|
So it's advisable to stick with a plastic spur ?
|
Yeah, the plastic spurs will work fine. I've only had one spur strip on me since I put the revo slipper on. It was preventable too, the motor loosened up on me. Give your slipper a little play and they hold up great. Another plus that I like are they are a bit quiter then the metal spurs. I tired the RR metal spur a long time ago. This was before I found out about hardened pinions. Man that thing ate two different sets of the traxxas pinions up in one run.
|
I had been using the Strobe Slipper with a 51T/20T Mod 1 combo. Good luck finding them though. It's not being made anymore.
By the way, I ditched my gorillamaxx single motor mount in favor of the stock traxxas to provide better heat dissipation. The extra aluminum surface helps in keeping my motor cool. |
Marcus...you have a wicked website. It must take a lot of work to keep it updated. Impressive set of RC and 1:1 builds you have also!
|
C-note my Jetta 2.2 turbo (chip or 5 chough) takes the stinkstang, slapstick 6 speed bye bye baby...crap dat n0s

Back on topic: Got the Castle-Neu 2200kv combo today so I'll be installing it tonight. I see what you guys mean about the notchy rotation of the slotted rotor, if it made a popping noise I'd swear it was a Nitro motor !!!! http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_54.jpg http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_55.jpg |

Yea, I have too much time on my hands I guess hehehehe |
It looks real good.
|
Okay, she's finished, well, she's together anyway.
Yet to fire the ESC/Motor up and I'm still awaiting pinions. Right now she's got 20/65 gears (Buggy diffs) and running 6S. Probably need a few more teeth on the pinion [?]. Pics and words HERE http://www.mkeeler.com/models/bmaxx/bmaxx_61.jpg |
nice job, slick as olive oil, ready to race $50 on me
|
Really Nice build! I like the rpm but you do realize those towers flex alot. How much does it weigh? When you get it running post some video if you can. I wonder if cc is going to come out with different colored motors or are all of them going to be green.

 Sweet build Marcus... Can't wait to see some vids.
Alien |
Ant updates yet?. Hows it run? I just bought a g2 chassis and will be doing a similer build. I was wondering if you thought about extending it?
|
No, I didn't get a chance to run it yet. The snow is pretty heavy and I refuse to send it through snow/slush/salt. Besides, when it's -20 outside I'd rather sit inside and look at it instead.
I have absolutely no intention of extending it no. I won't be racing it competitively so don't really see the need. |
-20 now thats cold I live in california I cant imagine it being that cold. Its been 70-80 here for the las week. Extending it isnt just for racing not does it handle and jump better but it helps with high speed stability oh not to forget help with keeping the front wheels down with brushless power. I think am going do a UE monoblock but I think the g-maxx store has the upper aluminum plate and lower skid (front skid flattened out) in stock It is the least expensive option.
|
:surprised: YES..:yipi::yipi:. NICE Marcus  nice job indeed..:great:
|
Finally got my Gorilla single speed setup and steel idler/gear installed.
