My outrunner CRT .5

I've pretty much finished up my crt .5 now. I am running a Flightpower 30c 3200mah 3s lipo, Turnigy 1100kv 36mm outrunner, and a mamba max esc. It is still a work in progress. I need to get better battery straps, secure the battery tray more, make chassis supports, shrinkwrap the battery, mount the rx in a better place and get an antenna run, get a better wheel/tire setup etc. The ones on the backs in the picture bind when in the front and the ones on the front don't have enough hexes to be run on all four wheels.

I only took it for a short 5 minute test run. At the end I just stopped, the battery wasn't even close to empty. The battery and Mamba max (without the bec disabled) were ice cold. The motor was barely warm. Maybe 85*f. It was pretty dang fast for 3s. Top speed was around 35mph and it could easily wheelie if it got traction. I picked the motor planning to run on 4s lipo, so I know I can get much more out of this setup. I'll probably get bigger tires first then maybe somday get a 4s lipo. I don't even have a suitable charger atm...

A few problems I ran into when building it is that I had a problem drilling through the beefy motor mount. I think I had a dull bit or something, so stupidly I put the bit in my dremel and tried that. It didn't do crap, then I dunked it in some water because it was so hot. I think this strengthened it. I gave up and finished it the next day with a new drill bit.

Heres a challenge to anyone: Tell me what is different about the car. Something is very different.

As everyone knows, words suck and pictures are ok. Heres some pics. They're huge, thank god. First one is from the mock up stage.

I will get a vid eventually, after I work out all the bugs. It's too cold anyway.. I will probaby have a vid after the snow melts. I got lucky on the day I ran and it was like 45* and the street was half way dry. It won't be like that again for awhile...

Nice....you flipped the steering around! I have always wanted t do a direct drive set up...maybe a revo?

snellemin 02.02.2009 10:47 PM

Looks cool man. Mine looks all cramped out compared to yours.

Metallover 02.02.2009 10:47 PM

You got it! I just placed an order on hobbycity and I'll extend that painfully short battery lead.

 Mine is cramped too... Maybe its because I have the extened chassis...

I have some MAJOR updates today. I got a 4s lipo and took it out for a spin. This thing is beast. I can flip it over from a stand-still, there is no cogging, and it's very fast. Unfortunately, the servo came off so I thought of ways to re-mount it. This is what I came up with.

first run on 4s
http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7301614.jpg
new battery mount
http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7301615.jpg

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7301619.jpg

So I got it looking really nice. I can fit the stock .5 rx pack (maybe bec later) inside the rx box. The only problem is that that pack didn't work for some crap with the connector.

The handeling was MUCH better then it has ever been. Everything is now solidly mounted except the battery, which I was planning to mount better later.

I was going at least 30mph into my driveway and went onto my grass. There is a bump there and the car went flying. It did multiple violent cartwheels and it landed upside down.

Metallover 02.22.2009 07:53 PM

When I flipped it over this is what I saw.

That is my wost crash I've ever... crashed. I looked for the driveshafts for about 10 minutes in my front yard. I'm sure I looked like a real retard. I can see myself slowly walking around in the middle of my yard looking down at nothing.

I found the important driveshaft and I'll hopefully find the other when we do the spring raking. Or mowing.:gasp: Now I'll have to remount the motor mount, replace the ball cup and I should be good.

emaxx101 02.22.2009 08:04 PM

sucks about the crash. nice truck though.

it couldnt have been any worse than me on my hands and knees on the bathroom floor looking for a lost contact lens

Metallover 02.22.2009 08:14 PM

I already got it all cleaned up. [azjc if you could take the pictures out of your quote I'd appreciate it]

magman 02.22.2009 08:20 PM

Glad you are getting this back together....You could use a longer chassis..:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Unsullied_Spy 02.22.2009 08:20 PM

Looks good, sucks that the mount broke. I've been looking through my yard long enough my neighbors don't bother asking anymore  Are those the stock turnbuckles? I crashed mine 2-3 days ago and they snapped like a twig, I'm surprised yours are OK (though it looks like one bent).

What's_nitro? 02.22.2009 08:30 PM

Metal detector??? Hey, at least your chassis was still in one pi- ehhemm... That is a nice clean setup you have though.

No, their not bent. That picture is just $Hi^. It makes it look bent. I'm going to redo the turnbuckles. The rims were rubbing against them so I tried to fix it by moving the steering links forward and chopping off the extra turnbuckle, but it still rubbed a little. I'll do that even more and there will be no way it can still rub.

Dirtfreak15 02.22.2009 08:47 PM

wow
dont think ive ever seen a direct drive setup before
looks sweet :)

Metallover 02.22.2009 10:57 PM

OK, Just finished putting it back together. NO MORE DICKING AROUND WITH THE MOTOR MOUNT!!

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7301624.jpg
http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7301625.jpg

I also fixed the steering binding. I hope I don't have any more issues with the steering. The first pic shows the 2nd and third hole.

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7301628.jpg

After this crash and all this rebuilding I know what the weak spots are. I tried to fix them the best I can and now they shouldn't fail later when I am depending on it to run.

What's_nitro? 02.23.2009 01:36 AM

*evil laugh* Yesss!! Moooore screeewss!!!

I couldn't tell what was holding the motor on before, but that new setup looks sturdy.

GREYGHOST 02.23.2009 04:46 AM

Outter limits.!!:gasp:

Metallover 02.23.2009 07:23 PM

I just got a good run in with my crt .5 with 4s. Ambient was under freezing... Temps at the end were 105 for the motor and 100 for the MM and 25c Flightpower 3300mh lipos. The first 2/3 on the run was grass driving. The rest was on the street. I didn't let off the throttle much.

What's_nitro? 02.23.2009 10:30 PM

That is the only thing I like about R/C in the winter. Nothing gets hot!

BL_RV0 02.25.2009 10:33 AM

Nice dude! Looks like you're enjoying the truck. I like your layout too, nice and clean.

Metallover 03.04.2009 08:05 PM

I got some M2 gladiators today. Their huge! On the top speed estimator I got 35mph on 3s and 47mph on 4s. I am not getting that, but I bet it's within 10. With my new tires I got 50mph on 3s 67mph on 4s. I would bet this will be a good setup on 3s and it should bust 50mph on 4s with the new tires. I will do 4s for speed runs and bashing, and hopefully it doesn't get too hot.

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7301669.jpg

I can't run them yet as I still need to get some 2.2 truck wheels, 12mm hexes, and a balance adapter. I'll post results and maybe even a vid.

Metallover 03.04.2009 11:03 PM

I got to export the values from the speed calculator.

With 3s

Differential Ratio: 3.25
Transmission Ratio: 1
Other Ratio: 1
Spur Tooth Count: 1
Pinion Tooth Count: 1
Total Voltage: 11.1

Motor KV: 1100
Tire Diameter (inches): 4.5........(gladiators)
Tire Ballooning (inches): 0
Motor Current Draw: 0
Motor coil Ω: 0
Spur/Pinion Ratio: 1 : 1
Total Ratio: 3.25 : 1

Final Torque: Amperage not specified...
Final Power: Amperage not specified...

I'm thinking 3s will be the highest I'll go with these tires and I'll save the 4s for larger cars. I'll have to try it tough because it would be fast as hell with 4s...

Metallover 03.06.2009 11:34 AM

Here is another pic with the old tires. I'll probably refer to this in my sig. .... Or not.. It's too blurry. And godly bright.

Metallover 03.27.2009 11:58 AM

I got some new wheels.. I also wish I could delete the post above.

That thing is bad looking, nice work.

Snipin_Willy 03.27.2009 08:37 PM

I love my gladiators. You'll find out that weight of them spinning in the air with such a short wheel base make the truck back flip off of every jump. That's why I'm getting myself the RCM chassis.

Metallover 03.27.2009 08:47 PM

Cool. I'm going to go for the 6 backflipper trickyyyy. Should be sweet.

I am awaiting a good power supply so I can charge my lipo and run this. Can't wait. The temps are pretty cold too. It was under freezing all day today. It was cold fishing and dunkball with a friend.... Real cold.

Metallover 04.08.2009 08:35 PM

I got a nice run in today. I was running hard in my back yard on grass with a jump. I got some temps. 160f on the motor, 130 on the esc (bec enabled), and 95 on the battery. Speeds were great. I started with the battery half discharged from a run last night on pavement. Speeds were great, probably 35-45mph. I don't think 4s will work out too well with this motor... I would have to go back to my smaller tires.

here are some pics of the newly redone lipo. Big thanks to Linc for the re-do and big thanks to Overkill who sent me some labels free of charge! Thanks Guys!

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7301767.jpg

It jumped and flew great. I could do backflips on demand. I got a little cogging, but it may have been just glitching from the radio. It is a little low on juice...

This is going to be a great basher this summer! I might race it a few times too...:yipi:
