New project - Brushless Revo

Hey guys starting a BL Revo project, just bought a Nitro the other day, lots of Alloy goodies on it, very sturdy. Have ripped the Nitro motor out to hopefully fund some of the conversion.

Electrics I already have for this are:

MMM V3 ESC
Spektrum Radio
2 * 2s 5000 Reedy Hard Cased Lipos

Any ideas what motor and gearing I should use? I prefer the Medusa motors and we have to run on 4s Lipo

Also any weak points that need to be upgraded. Front and rear diffs have been done, unsure on centre, still have to check.

Aiming for top speeds around 40mph, is this a realistic expectation on 4s Lipo. Would like to lift the front end on occasion as well.

I'm running a Medusa 36-70-2000Kv on my conversion.

I would opt for a neu 1415, 1515, or a medusa 70mm, gear according to whatever speed you want.

Yeah I was looking at the 70mm 2300 motor, gearing wise it'd have to be able to run fairly cool given the climate here, in summer we can get some days pushing 110-120f and racing doesn't necessarily stop for that.

Another pic, nitro gear is out, ready for the BL gear, centre transmission is on the bench for inspection.

I would get rid of the 40 series wheels and go with a more traditional Maxx size rim, I run maximizer beadlocks with badland tires

fastbaja5b 02.05.2009 06:08 AM

Yeah the truck came with 23mm rims and these on them, so when they are due for a change I will revert back to 17mm as thats what my Buggy runs

fastbaja5b 02.05.2009 08:35 AM

I had a look and if I want to run the Electriclutch I have to use a 60mm medusa to have suspension clearance at the rear.

Will this be underpowered?

azjc 02.05.2009 10:12 AM

you could do it, but if you went with a 70mm it would put less stress on the motor

Semi Pro 02.05.2009 02:16 PM

70-2300 or 70-2000 would be great with mikes mount and i dont think you will have any problems with start up on a 36-70 so you dont really need a clutch (i have the clutch and i hate it)

You can use a 70mm Medusa just fine. No suspension clearance problem at all.

If I want to retain the 2 speed am I better off with the 60 size?

you would be better off with a 36-70 reguardless of if you keep the 2 speed

the 36-70 will run cooler and offer more power on demand at any rpm than the 36-60 will, run time diffrences will not be very diffrent between the two motors.

the big question is how heavy will your battery be? and are you going to race or bash

fastbaja5b 02.07.2009 10:34 AM

Well for the time being funds dictate I need to use the 36-60 from my X1CR as I can't afford another motor right now (maybe next month lol!)

What gearing would you suggest? I will be running 4s (2 * 2s 5000mah 20c Reedy Hard cased) and the truck has a Forward only conversion standard gears (13/17), aiming around 35-40mph but my main goal is a reliable cool running set up. What gearing do others with the Revo conversion use?

I will also be using mechanical brakes

Ok I got a Neu 1515 2050kv, it's a 60mm long can, so is that the 2d? - no wait been told it's a Neu 1515 2.5d

What gearing should I run with the standard 2 speed transmission. Also have a Robinson Racing steel wide range gear set on order and have alloy diff cups done, anything else need beefing up?

Arct1k 02.13.2009 07:22 AM

2.5d is 1650kv a 5/6s motor - You only need 2nd gear...

That motor is a driveline killer! :) Stock up on diffs and CVDs... If i'm not careful I can shear a traxxas steel cvd or an output shaft...

you have a 2d and the length of a Neu 1515 is 68 mm, I would also suggest the mod to remove the 1st gear and lock the tranny in 2nd, I used to have a converted 3.3 Revo with a 1515 2.5 d on 6s lipo with stock diffs and drivelines and never broke anything, it will be ok as long as you dont go WOT from a stop ( this is where your amp draw and physical stress on you drivetrain is the greatest)

fastbaja5b 02.14.2009 10:35 PM

Gave it a run today using the Medusa 36-60-2000 geared 15/40 with a normal gear set and had the two speed set to almost immediate change to 2nd.

SLOW!

I think top speed would be lucky to hit 30? Is this more of a 5s set up? Can I gear this or the NEU 1515 2D to run on 4s?

Temps were all fine, and the Clutch got to 150 max (so not sure why people are having clutch issues) Didn't have much of a tendancy to lift the front end up either.

I like the feel of it, coming from using a Baja for over a year, this is a lot more predictable for me.

The Medusa I usually run under a fan will the Neu motor I have have more torque and will it be comfortable geared say 18/36 with a wide ratio set without a fan?

Thanks to those who have chimed in so far, but not getting a lot of feedback on gearing which is my concern at the moment.

mriccucci 02.14.2009 10:53 PM

Yea that motor is a little slow for a 4s setup, i would either get a bigger batt, 5 or 6s, or a higher kv motor, maybe a 2300 medusa, or a 2650 castle neu. The clutch really helps with the wheely problem.

fastbaja5b 02.15.2009 04:20 AM

So wait, when I suggested a 60-2000 first up people were like "get the 70mm" and now that I went with a Neu (which is meant to be the shiznit) it's too low a kv?

It's all a bit confusing.

Anyway I found out the motor was a Neu 1512 2.5d

I ran this geared 15/36 with standard ratio, temp around outside 82.4

After 10 min, Battery at 90, ESC at 110, Motor at 133

But it feels slow!

How can I gear this to be quicker on 4s (safely)
