Hobao Goes Brushless
Brushless hyper 8.5 is on the way.
http://rcspecial.com/news/?p=14604 Not exactly great pictures, but that motor mount looks awfully flimsy to me??? |
wow that motor mount looks weak , but they dont go big in europe:lol:
|
Wow, I don't think that'd last a race. A few landings, and miss a triple short and you're bent.
|
|
Interesting route Hobao took on converting the Hyper 9. Can't say I've seen it done that way before. I feel for the center-front driveshaft though...
|
is that the hobby wing esc?
|
Mike had one like this on an early RC8T design but couldn't get the alignment right at the rear...
I think it looks really neat - top marks for trying something different. |
That could actually be the best layout Ive seen for an electric 1/8 with 3 diffs. i was just telling someone else that this layout would be the ideal setup IMO a couple weeks ago and we were talking about prototypeing a setup like that. Here HoaBoa has already done it.
Mark my words... this will be come the standard layout for these electric 1/8 buggies. In a couple years they are all going to be layed out similar to this. Look how compact it all is and tight to the center line. it looks like it will have awesome balance. I want one of these. |
I'm betting they used a really small spur gear on the center diff to allow the center dif to drop down low enough to line up with the rear diff pinion.
The more I look at this layout the more I like it. :intello: |
What about the extreme length of the front CTR drive shaft?
|
The length of the center shaft doesnt bother me at all. Have you seem how long the rear shaft on the FLM tranny forward Savage is. it holds up just fine.
I cant believe I am going to have to buy an Ofna this year. I would have never guessed it. But I am so all about this layout. The more I look at it the more I love it. Its as close to ideal as it can be and still keep the basic 3 diff setup. Toss Mike's slipper diff in and its done!!! |
Is it me or does it look like a stamped chassis and not have the Pro pieces...
Wonder how strong the back end will be withought the full brace... |
Yea. it looks like a stamped chassis, but who nows where in the prototype stage this is. It could be a one off concept model at this point.
Hopefully if they do release it it will come with the pro parts. Looks like stamped shock towers in the pictures too. |
I'd be tempted by this I have the X1CR and an e-eight but might go in this direction - I like my ST Pro eek Pro's I now have 2...
|
The "9" looks great. The motor mount on the 8.5 looks like the first one I mad from scratch. It snapped the first time I pulled the trigger.
|
Finally a 1/8 buggy that is designed for electric from the ground up. The diff in the rear really opens up space in the chassis and allows the battery to sit right next to the center drive shaft. Also the straight drive shaft will almost eliminate wear on the drive pins as they do not slide back and forth in out drives.

I really like the look of the hyper 9. hope they have some more info soon. I was going to buy the losi 8 v2 but will hold off until I find out more about this.
|
Jeff if you get one, you better have the full run down on that! I actually had that set up in my CRT.5, with a CD. Never finished because of racing. Would be a nice tight layout for sure. In a .5 the only thing to fit was a 44T spur I believe
Id love to put that into my 777 worlds if it could work |
Although the layout (sans the center diff) is very common in smaller scale, it is really refreshing to see it in 1/8. I really wish there's a top deck or something for additional stiffness though.
I might just have to replace my Hyper 7 with the 9e once they become more available - there's one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Hyper-9-E-versio...742.m153.l1262 |
Wow, the 8.5 looks crappy IMO. I've seen better hacked conversions made by drunken monkeys. That can't be serious.
The 9 looks better by far since things look like they were meant to be where they are - except the ESC; that looks like an afterthought. I do like the diff in the rear, but agree they must be either reducing the spur tooth count or lowering the chassis for rear diff alignment. If they made the ESC look like it actually belonged somewhere, it would be a winner IMO. Edit: I like the chassis grooves on the bottom. Should make it a little sturdier and act as a skidplate for reduced drag when it does bottom out. And I agree with the top plate idea; I like the durability so I make my own. But, doesn't that reduce the wanted flex for handling? |
Yea, they way I understand it the Hyper 9 is using a 40T spur gear on the center diff. Makes it easier to get the diff that low for lining up with the 43T front/rear diffs.
A top plate ould take alot of the available "twist" out of the chassis. that twist is important for traction. Although, they do it in 1/10 so it would probably mean going thinner on the bottom chassis plate to get some of the flex back. I think the thicker single plate is probably thougher in the long run. For sure wouldnt want the electric 1/8 stuff to turn into big fragile 1/10 style cars. I acually think that this hyper 9 layout is the closest Ive seen to ideal so far. The only reason I think they put the ESC up top like that was becasue they were using a gigantuous hobbywing esc and there just wasnt quite enough room down low on the main plate for that big sucker. |

Surprised to see the mini is ready to ship though. Also I believe you are right about the spur. The nitro uses a 40t so I would assume the electric probably does too. Would be great if we could get the slipper in there too. :) |
I haven't even started working on my 808 kit and am already thinking of ways to put my center diff at the back
A friend is very good with making composite parts, so I might give a shot to a custom CF chassis and copy the 9 E layout with the 808 front/rear assemblies, now that be nice :) And of course a slipperential at the center (back now? lol). Someone posted on rctech about how he did his D8E like that and that got me started lol He had a good idea to extend the front driveshaft, key 2 cut ones (long truggy ones) together and hold them with an outer tube, the keying takes all the torque, not the outer tube that just keeps things lined up. Nice thinking... He explained how the hyper 9 center diff coupled with the back one but I just did not get it: Quote:
Can't wait for more pics of the 9E!! Someone buys that ebay kit already and posts some pics!!!! While on the "1/8 chassis layout/format" subject, what do you guys think of Tekno's square can motors? I find it really good. It's similar to how the nitro engines are mounted and saves on the motor mount plate and what not. Just 2 small alu inserts that the motor bolts on and it can slide side to side for mesh. How much simpler/lighter can it gets? Only draw back I can see is if you have a large spur/pinion your motor has to be offseted to the side more and that calls for a larger chassis, probably why tekno v3 chassis are so wide. Not a very good thing imo. What do you guys think? |
nitrohouse now has them listed. coming soon but you can order them. much better price then the ebay buy it now. hopefully this means they will be here soon.
