Anyone running the Robinson trans gears, what do yall think

Just what the title says, I was thinking of ordering this and just wanted to hear what other people whom were using it thought. Also let me know what your running it in, whether it is a conversion or the e-revo, and if you are running the standard set or the wide ratio gear set. This will be run in a conversion, but I wanted to make sure that it would be worth it. Thanks

well, i have a RRP steel spur gear in my BL e-maxx and i like it so far. But i've only run it for 1 run so far.

azjc 02.13.2009 10:19 PM

IMO the steel gears are unneeded, I have never broken the stock plastic ones or have I ever head of anybody doing so., but if you do go with the wide set, and you will only need the second gear, 1st gear is useless with a BL setup

cwallis 02.13.2009 10:38 PM

I would have to buy the whole set cause I use the tekno conversion kit so I use second gear. The reason I have not locked it into 2nd gear is cause I have heard that it causes the clutch bell to overheat, is this true.

mriccucci 02.13.2009 11:31 PM

I have a plastic tranny and i have gone through one set of gears, he plastic will not hold up at all with a direct drive. the clutch setup may help some but theses gears are not meant for that amount of torque.

Good grease goes a long way to make the plastic gears last. I like tamiya's ceramic grease for the plastic gears and the anti-wear for metal gears. I have run a few revos both 2 speed and locked and the plastic stuff has held up for me. I do shim everything though.

plastic gears are holding up fine in my revo, its just the clutch thats a problem

Gee 02.14.2009 01:54 AM

I just took the clutch of my tekno/slayer conversion yesterday. I thought I would get use to it but I didn't. Didn't like the sound it made on mine. Like something was broke on it. I like it with just a pinion and spur. Only metal gears I've used in any of my trannies were the idlers. They hold up real well and I pretty much just started using the graphite power inside the transmissions. Last I look at the RRP gears for the tranny they were pretty expensive.

I did blow out first gear when I first got the slayer and was experimenting with different tires. Like azjc said first gear isn't really needed there is enought (brushless) power that first gear is usually going to take the brunt of the damage.

I'm using them on my revo conversion with a locked 2nd gear. I removed the elektri clutch and I'm now using a pinion.

Here's my build thread:

Temp problems. I don't like how the clutch heats up so quick. Besides, the pinion is more predictable.

fastbaja5b 02.14.2009 06:49 AM

It seems most people who have temp problems with the clutch, are straight away locked into 2nd? Is that true?

Just finished my conversion will test temps tomorrow, I am retaining the 2 speed for now but I ordered a set of these gears, I figure better to be too strong than not strong enough

madmaxx 02.14.2009 12:42 PM

i kept having issue's with stripping out the topshaft/input gear on my tranny and since i installed the Robinson Racing wide ratio gear set NO MORE problem's! :yipi:

i run a nitro picco .26 red dot with an 053 pipe

one other thing you can also do is the "pin" mod which can be found on the traxxas site ;)

i have the same problem he was haveing and i still have the two speed set-up

i think it has alot to do with the weight of the truck + a small clutch + alot more power than the clutch was ever designed to hold = high clutch temps and bad clutch ware.

tekno says its not a problem but i have given up on the clutch and the long shank pinions arent a good idea so im not really sure what the real fix is

BashemSmashem 02.16.2009 12:16 PM

I have the RRP steel tranny in my nitro REVO and I like it alot , I stripped the top shaft gears and the primary drive gear in the tranny , now I dont sweat on power landings , or hard shocks too the trans from quick on/off power burst . I think its worth 80.00 for the durability you gain .

fastbaja5b 02.16.2009 08:27 PM

My revo's fairly heavy and I couldn't get the clutch over 150!

Giot a set of these gears on order so wonder if that will impact it

Kyosho 02.18.2009 06:35 PM

I have RRP tranny gears. locked in second. MMM esc, 10xl, 5s zippy, RCM motor mount.
